Root The difference between Motorola and htc? Unbrickable?

Nowhere land..
I had the droid x, it seemed to me it was unbrickable! If I goofed something up, I just used the linux method do do a wipe and full factory rom was reinstalled. Simple!

Or can a phone truly be bricked?

I do want to root my htc Rezound! The problem is, I don't know if it's theoretically the same as a Motorola.

Meaning, if I fork something up, can't I just do a full wipe and reinstall as I did with my droid x?

Also, where can I find the official factory rom should I want to revert?

Is there a way to more reliably root my htc with ubuntu linux?

And if I do revert back to full stock, can I make it where Verizon wouldn't know it was ever rooted.

Peace

HTC does have an RUU which is similar to the Moto SBF. So unless you goof something up with the hardware you can always RUU back to stock. Scott keeps RUU's on his site(scottsroms.com) so that's a good place to start.

I use ubuntu at home and haven't had any issues rooting/ROM'ing/theme'ing. However some scripts do have to be edited in order to work on Linux. Not a big deal so long as you don't mind scripting...which I don't.

Lastly, until we get a true S-Off method the best you can do is RUU back to stock(which requires relocking the bootloader). At stock it shows "Locked" in the bootloader. Once you unlock it will never go back to "Locked", the best you can do is "Relocked". However Verizon doesn't seem to have trained employees on how to look for that so don't let it get in your head too much.

if you have to run a stock ruu for some reason, your hboot will be locked again afterwards :)

but at any rate,as was said, htcdev unlock is almost impossible to brick since it protects the hboot and radio,as those are the best ways to actually brick a device with software changes, especially the bootloader. a bad bootloader will not boot anything on the phone, and you cant change the bootloader without a bootloader

the one thing that does make it a lil different is the fact that the boot image is not writable from recovery,so you will have to get used a slightly different way of flashing than what youre used to if you want to install a rom with a different kernel,or install a new kernel on your rom.

nothing you can do to system or boot should make your phone unrecoverable,it should be just as safe as motos locked bootloader devices.

root away and have fun with it :)

I haven't ran the RUU yet, and I probably never will but according to HTCdev and many people that have done it....HBOOT will only ever say "locked", "unlocked", or "relocked". Can you verify that after relocking and running the RUU that your phone does indeed say "locked" again?

yes. i have locked and unlocked and run RUUs on an evo 3d several times,as well as my inc 2. ive only had my rezound for a couple days and the OTA snuck in on me before i had any reason to run the 1.02.605.6,but when an RUU for the 2.01.605.11 is available i will run it,and post a couple pics :)

when you run an ruu,all partitions are replaced with those in the RUU... therfor the bootloader is back to locked as the one in the ruu has never been any other way ;)

not that it matters much. when your phone makes it back to htc from vzw, they can decide not to cover your device to vzw if they choose. dont forget you did checkmark/sign a disclaimer understanding that unlocking your bootloader may void "all or parts of your warranty". there is a reason they give an unlock token thats unique to each phone. they have on record that you requested and flashed an unlock token,if they care to research that for every device that comes back.

it has been awhile since i messed with the evo 3d. now im not sure if i dont remember it correctly,or if the hboots are getting smarter ;)

but at any rate i wanted to correct myself so as to not spread false information.

i will play with it some more, and see if i can get it to change.;)
