Canada Galaxy Nexus Thread (Updated - 12/06/11) - December 7th Early Sale

True, no expansion slot - but it still works like USB storage device. I transferred a custom ring tone the other day.

I have not tested music streaming hooked up to my car yet.

Galaxy Nexus doesn't support USB Mass Storage, other Android 4.0 devices still do | The Verge

so you can transfer via USB Mass Storage Mode? other threads I've read say that option is no longer available however, you can transfer using computers using Windows OS but not via MAC computers.

*** just read the link you sent... seems that it's not possible to transfer via USB mass storage mode except through some file transfer app :( boo! one of the reasons why i went with android and not iphone because i don't want to be chained to an app to transfer files :(

Sorry, yes that's what I meant - you can transfer using Windows OS. When I did my ring tone, all I did was use Windows explorer in Windows 7 and dragged an mp3 which had a ringtone into its respective directory on the phone and it worked.

I'm thinking of selling my iPhone 4S for a Galaxy Nexus. Just wanted to confirm a couple of things:

1) Will my Rogers iPhone micro-sim work in the Galaxy Nexus? I understand it's unlocked from Bell/Virgin, but I've also been hearing things about sim APN's so I just want to confirm.

2) Will my Bell or Virgin Galaxy Nexus work in States (AT&T, T-Mobile)? Again, I've read the posts and understand that it's sold unlocked for Canadian carriers... but will USA carriers also be supported by the Bell/Vrigin Galaxy Nexus as well?

Thanks!

No to the iPhone micro SIM. You would need to go to Rogers store for a normal SIM.

The Galaxy Nexus is unlocked PERIOD. Which means you can use it on ANY GSM/HSPA network IN THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD! Just put the carrier's APN setting in and that carrier's SIM card.

So, I talked with 5 different service providers this afternoon (a mix of Bell and Virgin) and ALL reps told me that the phone is locked to them. Do you think it's possible that things have changed since Dec 16th? This is quite confusing...
I got mine yesterday at the source in Eaton's Centre, and it is indeed unlocked.

To the others that already own it: have any of you gotten an OTA update to 4.0.2 or 4.0.3 yet? My reception is really bad on this phone (came from an iphone 3G) and I'm hoping the new radio firmwares will fix it...

The reps you talked to are unknowledgeable or they were told to say that the Galaxy Nexus is locked with their carrier, so you are forced to switch carrier for their phone.

All of the reps I talked to didn't even know that the phone is a penta GSM/HSPA.

I understand that this is true with respect to SIM locks, since the phone is sim-unlocked. But is it true for GSM frequencies? As I understand it, North American GSM is mostly GSM 850/1900, while most of Asia/Europe/Africa/Australia are GSM 900/1800. So are the Canadian phones able to do all 4 of 850, 900, 1800 and 1900?

I know that GNs do exist that work on the asian GSM frequencies, I'm just looking for confirmation that the ones on sale in Canada from Virgin can do this too, since there are plenty of phones that do only 800/1800 or only 850/1900 - I'm often travelling in Asia with my Nexus One and am used to just swapping in local SIM cards since it supports the asian and north american frequencies on the same device.

JLishere's earlier comment started out reassuring me by saying it's pentaband, but then he only lists the north american GSM frequences :/

- It's already OEM unlocked and pentaband (850/1900 GSM/GPRS/EDGE, 850/1700/1900 WCDMA/HSPA) - it will work with any SIM card

Trying to dig into it a bit more, the closest thing I can find to an official document from Samsung is the Quick Start guide from: Support for Galaxy Nexus? SAMSUNG

This is for the I9250M, which is supposedly the version we get in Canada. It doesn't list frequencies explicitly, but the Specific Absorption Rates values it gives only include GSM 850 and GSM 1900 so I guess it's implied it only does those GSM frequencies?

The corresponding guide for the "i9250 which is the LTE version in the US" seems to be http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/c...T-I9250_QSG_EU_Eng_Rev.1.0_111029a_Screen.pdf , and it's even worse, not listing any specific frequencies even in the SAR section. From that section it sounds like this is the version for Europe. Is there a third version for asia/international? And what about LTE?

And can't find an actual full manual anywhere, just these vague Quick Start guides :/ Am I just looking in the wrong places? It shouldn't be this hard to find the actual specs for a device when you know the model number and are searching the manufacturer's website.

edit: Bell's spec page at Specifications - Galaxy Nexus from Bell Mobility - Bell Canada does claim it does everything, which is reassuring, assuming Virgin and Bell get the same model. Not sure if this is marketing fluff though, would rather see a Samsung spec

finally got the phone, nice device
anybody flash their gnex to yakju? since all canadian versions are yakjuux
if so did you have any problems??
only thing ive heard of is that you then also need the UGKL1 baseband and flash that to not have any signal issues, not sure about anything else like the kernel or build versions though

thanks, how about going back to yakjuux stock rogers version for everything?
do you know the steps or a link on how to do that? ive been looking and havent been able to find steps or a stock image for the yakjuux version, so far it seems like once i go to yakju i cant go back to yakjuux if i need to for warranty reasons

although if i were to submit the phone and it was yakju, not sure if they would notice, if they looked in about for the phone they would see the same baseband but probably the kernel version and build number would be different due to the yakju flash

any ideas/experience with this?
