is the note a phone or tablet ?

It's suppose to push the boundaries of the phone into almost tablet realm, but it's still a phone. The way they are marketing it is that you don't have to carry around a phone and a tablet, you can have an "all-in-one" device. I mean the cooler things about this phone is the S-Pen capabilities which set it apart from other phones besides just the enormous screen size.

Like earlier users have posted,
depends on the viewpoint.

Are you considering to buy one for yourself?
Some YES and NO arguments for you :)

YES if you:
- need to have an all-round device with you 24/7, which would be helpful for also making phone calls
- love to read magazines, ebooks, internet articles on your mobile device (big, very nice AMOLED screen)
- want a good-quality digicam within your device (8PM, good resolution! & various pic editing apps)
- play Facebook-integrated games (Castle Age, Mafia Wars, etc.) regularly
- like the idea of also being able to (manually) draw sketches and notes on your device (comes with a stylus)
- think that overall performance (internet, multi-tasking, etc.) and battery power is more important to you than the size of the device
- would like to flash custom ROMs onto the device

NO if you:
- want to have a small device that fits into your jeans pockets as well
- need mainly a mobile phone for making calls and the occasional sms now and then
- think that internet, ebook reading, gaming is "nice to have" but not a must on your mobile phone
- have always been an Apple-fan and used to Apple devices (!)
- define yourself clearly as an "end user only" (you have no idea what rooting means or flashing, and are not interested in it)

.. hope I could help a bit :)

And dont say its galaxy note !!!!!!!!!!!

With great respect and no confrontation the note is a bridge between a mobile phone and a tablet. This was the idea when Samsung developed it.

I get cross when some people say its too big for a phone or its too small to be a tablet. It is neither hence the name.....note.

A VW Polo and a VW passat are both cars but they are not one and the same in use nor ment to be and are not marketed as being the same thing!

As a Tablet its too small. (for me)

As a mobile phone is it to unpocket mobile friendly. (for me)

As a bridge between the two its perfect IF that is what one needs and will make use off.

One cannot compare apples and oranges.

I hope you dont think I am being rude but....The note is what it says on the box and what Samsug market as being, new tech' for those who may like the best or worst of both worlds.

Very personal choice.

I would say its both; in the same way as an iPod Touch is a tablet, as is an iP4S.

They're all tablets, but the iP4S & Note happen to be phones too.

As with most things, it's personal choice, but I don't find it too big for voice calls or my pocket, or too small to complete most web or reading functions... that said it's not quite the all-in-one device I'd like; that'll be it's big bro' the SGT7.7. Can't wait for that.

The Tablet is like a Net-book without a keyboard and is a good name because it doesn't include the name of any particular device or application. For example, you can use a Tablet for making phone calls or taking pictures without having to call it a phone or a camera. A Tablet can be any size, for the name just describes the shape and not it's use, though it is generally accepted as being a multi-function device. So keyboard less smart phones can be called Tablets.

I like note because the big screen.

Personally, I bought it purely as a portable tablet. 9" inch and bigger tabs were no good for me. Prefer my ultra-light laptop.

Had several 7" tabs (Galaxy Tab, Playbook) which were just about portable, but still a little unweildy for longer e-book reading.

The Note? Perfect! Tab requirements, email, browsing, Kindle use, Apps... all rolled into one super handy and portable device. Wouldn't mind it streching a little more to 6" even, but won't complain with what it has now.

But as a phone? No thanks. Already have my handy keyboarded BB phone which covers those needs suitably.

For me is something i was searching for long time. Little bit of both, phone and tablet.
Eventhough is pretty big, I have no problem to carry it in my pocket. I've had iphone 4 and i used alot of internet (forums, betting :) ..) but the relativaly small screen bothered me. That's why i changed it for this one. I couldn't see more of it becouse of problems with sim card, but what i did so far, looks great.

Sorry, but I have to disagree with these points. First there are a number of former (and current) iPhone users using the Note and loving it more than the iPhone. Ok, I am not one of them, but they exist nevertheless.

The note fits in to all of my jeans pockets (including the case) even my tightest jeans. In fact,i because it is so thin, it fits better than my 3.something inch n900.

You certainly do not need to know about rooting to enjoy the Note. I have not rooted my phone and it still does everything I need.

But, to get back to the question posed by the OP: The note is a telephone which can also be used as a tablet. The quality of the calls is simply too good for it to be a tablet.

Regards,
Eric Ritchie.

For me it definitely feels more like a phone. I have a 7" tablet also, and that thing is WAY larger than the Note. No comparison.

Although interestingly, when you compare a 7" tablet and the Note, if you hold the note about 3" closer to your eyes than the tablet, the screen sizes are essentially about the same. :)
