Ice Cream Sandwich Update

That's because TouchWiz is still overlaid on top, and it hasn't changed much. If you compare 'vanilla' Android 4.0 with 2.3.x you see a huge difference.

A huge difference in the interface only, the basic functionality will be the same for most users, having touchwiz 4 on both just highlights this.

ICS is little disappointing, lots of improvements under the hood but most users will never notice or care about them.

That said the updated touchwiz 4 with the 3d effect on the homescreens is smoother but that’s nothing to do with ICS. :)

I think users will notice the under the hood ICS improvements... if only in the performance increases and improved battery life. Either way... cant wait for it to be officially released. I heard something about the 29th of Feb, so Samsung can beat any march iPad announcement.

I havent noticed any improvement in battery life and the performance is about the same, the stock broswer is allot better though but is that because of ICS or the updated browser? ;)

apparently both as the ICS browser would not be achievable without the improvements made in the framework of ICS itself. I'm not too bothered about ICS as a lot of app compatibility issues, just wish I could have the Gmail and Browser ICS apps on GB...

Even though there are rumours of certain relaese dates at the end of this month, i'm assuming that after then it's down to the service provider to roll out ICS? So the release date at the end of the month doesn't really mean that much unless you are willing to flash your phone?

I'm just saying cause i'm on O2 through Carphone warehouse, and I'm still on 2.3.4

:/

I'm in the exact same situation as you... but with ICS being a major update and CPW seemingly not using any branding at all, I'm hoping they release it quickly.

I have a sim free S2 which is not rooted. Now I maybe a bit slow, but I'm a bit confused about how updates actually work.
As I understand an update is provided by the network, so for instants O2 may get an update before say Vodafone.
How would this work with having a sim free S2?

At presnet I keep checking on the S2 itself for updates and via Kies and it always says no update available (latest version installed ) although I'm STILL on 2.3.4.

Will ICS be available to sim free mobiles before dedicated networks??? And is an OTA update.

Like I say, I'm a bit confused.

I might try it, but I don't have a lot of faith in kies backups :p

Does this have the upgraded ics apps such as contacts, gmail, browser or has Samsung butchered everything?

Plain ics is beautiful!

Yep, it has updated apps but it uses Touchwiz 4 so it looks much the same really.

There are two issues for me with the current beta, first one is an sd card error, some apps won't install from the market with an sd card mounted, easy to work around though.

Also, it will keep telling you an update is available but it will always fail to update, I removed it with titanium backup, but there may be another way to remove it, I'm not sure.

Same boat as me mate, they haven't sent an update out since 2.3.4 and I am continuously checking ota. I always thought the sim free models got the update 1st also, as the operators have to put their stuff on before they roll it out.
