for what they aspire to, which is everything, the google is inept crap, plain and simple. I mean, you want to be my "big brother" but then you're so incompetent in every conceivable interface except a browser and a search engine. I don't get it. I mean finesse me if you want to own me, for god's sake.

Google mail is ridiculously convoluted and contacts are too often impossible to import/export/figure/upload/download/send to your mother/your phone/synch up/link up/ (oh...they're already there? lucky you. IF they're there today or if you can figure how to GET a new one in there any given day). (and to you google, emails are converstions? please. we are not "tiny tots" in need of stroking like we're haz kittens. email is f'ing email).

their music app is a mystery wrapped in an enigma. their "services" are I don't know...there's no documentation, there's no answers to simple questions like HOW DO I GET A PHONE I HAVEN"T OWN IN THREE YEARS OFF MY ACCOUNT? (you don't), from how they determine who gets "what" name because you HAVE to have a name they think you should have and not a name YOU think you should have. so you can't sign in and be signed in to all of google, some google, I guess so, but I can't figure how much I'm signed into it because ....they want ONE identity and they're gonna nail me down for it and I ain't giving it to them..

because I'm android now, I'm involved with google again, which is making me nuts as you may have noticed. I gave up years ago. there are NO answers. only endless search engines to simple questions coming up with (as answers) OTHER PEOPLE BEGGING FOR THE SAME ANSWERS.

oh yeah...there is a wallet but you can't actually legitmately HAVE the wallet. you have to download an app that's really instructions telling you how to get this mysterious wallet, that may be convenient but makes me wonder why in hell it's such a big mystery that I can't get it in the normal way. something that has MY credit card information. hello????

google is way too much about getting your info and then determining who you are, over and over and over. it's as if my online identities are being put through a sieve...if they don't get to nail down who I am one way, they're gonna get me another. because I have no right to my privacy online according to how they're starting to operate. I have no right to determine how much or who gets that info.
I don't like any big institution that wants my info any more than I like apple and their incessant demands for exclusive access to me and my wallet. this is just greedy corporate types behind a cool kid on a skateboard mask. I don't like it one bit.

and they're screwing up youtube, HUGELY. I hate it. I really really hate it. I think maybe they learned too much when they teamed up with communist chinese govt.

Yes. This, a thousand times over.

For the record, every online company is looking to collect info on you. Google does it to an extreme because it helps them sell targeted ads...

They've screwed up Youtube so much that I actually hate using it. It takes like 8 screens to get to your favourites now, and the ability to organize by date added has been removed (it's there, but it doesn't work). Then the new interface itself is slow and buggy.

I genuinely do hate Google. The only Google service I use is Android, and I hated the fact that it forced me to create a Gmail account.

I also agree that they're going overboard with the data-mining. It's definitely bordering on invasion of privacy.

However, I would rather deal with Google's data-mining and stupid consolidation of services than Apple's closed ecosystem and price gouging. Google forces you to compromise on privacy rights while Apple forces you to give up your consumer rights.

While I understand what you are saying, many of the alternatives are not any better. Last night I had to find a way to gather about 150 email messages stored in a folder in my better half's Yahoo email account. She needed to forward them to her lawyer. Have you ever tried bulk forwarding email in Yahoo email? You can't! There simply is not a way to do this. The best suggestion I found was to configure an email client in Windoze and connect to Yahoo Plus (and only Yahoo Plus) using POP3. Yahoo does not officially support IMAP so I'd have to move all of her saved messages to the INBOX in order to get POP3 to download to the Windoze email client. Once there I could then archive them into a zip file for her...

Well you could always use PayPal? Of course last I heard there's a lot of hate online towards the policies of the financial stepchild of eBay...

Personally I think it's actually the RIAA that's messing up Youtube. Every time I turn around those bloodsuckers are restricting access to another of my favorite movie clips... or to a song that I like. I have to laugh, however, when I see a record company block access to vidios uploaded to an artists own Youtube account.

Youtube used to be so much fun. I see how they're trying to minimize how we use it, view it, search it...

When I got first started playing with and finally got involved with Android, I thought hey, google grew up. I figured they would have gotten MOST of this down pat...the basics at least.

I figured the CONTACTS business would be seamless and smooth. I'm talking CONTACTS. simple stuff. *gag*

I get that the interaction between devices isn't necessarily going to be smooth. I get that microsoft is a competitor. I get that they're not necessarily going to want androids and laptops to be as integrated as we'd like until some concessions and compromises are made. windows and apple did it. by now, ALL of them should be in tune/synched and locked in. but they're not.

and of the three, I hate to say it but android is the most primitive. and it shouldn't be. like apple did, android SHOULD be leading the pack. it does in some ways. but in others. blech.

and they are KILLING youtube. my beloved silly amazing youtube. soon it will be nothing but long commercials and music videos. anything else will cost you.

martimus, you are correct about the alternatives. thats the conundrum. that there aren't. so while they're playing fast and loose with our information, they're also not fulfilling the promise.

What's bother me is I feel the research is going into harvesting info as opposed to coming up with solutions to simple issues, LIKE contacts for example. and I say this because of all the stupid things google does and doesn't do, this would appear to be the most central and the simplest. The contacts list. The email, which is a circus of ridiculous and inept. I can barely look at it, it's like a soviet union refrigerator from the 1950s. square, stupid and useless.

I don't think this is because what they're promising are such difficult and complex programs. I'd be happy with a decent email and some consistent voice recognition in android. (not to mention a simple music app.).

I think it's because ALL the real juice is going into information gathering.

As I inferred in my original post in this thread, I KNOW information gathering is what all of this is about. but like they say: SHOW ME THE MONEY. I want the payoff. You want my information: want to know who calls me, who sells me, what I love and hate..okay. I don't have much say in this anyway. SO GIVE ME ALL THAT MAD TECHNO YOU"RE PROMISING.

And hands off youtube all you corporatist fascist bozos!!

Well you could always use PayPal? Of course last I heard there's a lot of hate online towards the policies of the financial stepchild of eBay...

ps. agreed on everything you said.

Yeah, if you sell on ebay, you can be royally pissed at paypal. I was a seller when they first started up. it was a small I think American bank and they promised WE WILL ALWAYS BE FREE to ebay sellers. Well that kind of died quickly. So that's what the hate is about.

Whats worse is they've never apologized nor made amends. But they don't have to. Ebay and ebay sellers made them huge in their heyday. And then Paypal went international humungous. Now they've separated (supposedly). You can't settle ebay disputes on paypal any more.

So as for this "wallet" I'm not sure how it works, but I believe it will be like a QR droid codes you scan. there are a lot of maybes with this. But it's out there and they're selling an idea and they're not even bothering to explain it. OR own it. They're putting it out there with no information, no responsibility. Just kind of "well, here's how to download it and you can have it but don't tell any body" sort of thing. BUt the word is out that it's just SO COOL.

so cynical.

Don't mean to offend Nexus tootsie, but it sounds like you are venting out of frustration instead of really trying to learn how to properly use the services. I've been increasingly adopting more and more google services (thank G+ and android for that), and thus far everything I've used is fairly straight forward and easy to use.. The biggest annoyances that I have are two:

1. Abysmal customer support. You are right about this one, documentation for FAQ's is poor at best, and trying to get an answer from anyone at google for any kind of help is probably harder than summoning the devil. That said, community forums do do a wonderful job of providing help. still, Google could do a LOT better in customer support.

2. everything seems to be in Beta stage. Since google's push toward a unified look and feel started not so long ago, sometimes it feels like every single one of their services are in a constant state of tinkering. This isn't bad, as they almost always improve for the better, but sometimes it feels like living in a house that is perennially under construction.

Still, I can't complain. I love their product integration and how everything just works together in the background, regardless of what platform I happen to be using. Learing how to configure and use it all, at least to me, is just part of the learning curve.

I sure wish Google would open Stores that had the equivalent of Genius bars where they could have classes teaching these kinds of things and answering these kinds of questions.

Huh?? ... can't even get Youtube in China, not without a proxy.

TBH I thought it was your "democratic", big corporation financed, copyright obsessed US Govt. screwing up Youtube. DMCA take-downs, etc.

there are NO answers. only endless search engines to simple questions coming up with (as answers) OTHER PEOPLE BEGGING FOR THE SAME ANSWERS.

We're all entitled to our opinions.

In my opinion, however, I don't find those statements to be true. Maybe I'm one of the lucky ones, but I regularly find Google's products to be extremely useful. Every day I find myself using Google to find answers, and I find them easily. Google has saved me from MANY hours of aimless wandering. Maybe you're not looking for the right thing or asking the right questions?

I've got Gmail going back to 2004 with important documents I've saved and contacts I don't even remember. It's all easily found with an intelligent query and a few milliseconds of my time. Google Maps has let me down fewer than a handful of times, and usually because some store has recently closed or is under construction. No problem, I report the problem so the next person is squared away. ICS speaks for itself. Oh, it's also open source so if you're worried about some malicious software you can see the code! If you actually go through and read some of the criticisms and issues about Google and privacy, you can quickly see that almost all of it can be effectively dealt with by taking a few simple steps. (e.g. the wi-fi surveillance issue... um.. secure your wi-fi!)

Again, we're all entitled to our own opinions. Though you don't claim it's an opinion, I assume it is. I just disagree.
