what Radio, ROM, and Kernel is it running? maybe who ever set it up is running the wrong radio for the ROM (ie. running a FroYo radio with a Gingerbread Rom or visa versa) or running a Sense Kernel on an AOSP ROM. basically need more info about the setup on the device before I can offer more detailed help.

need following info (can be found under About phone in settings)
Android Version
Baseband Version
Kernel Version
Mod Version
Build Number

what Bootloader you are running and if you have s=off will help also
you can get that info by turning phone off, then holding volume down and power button until phone powers up into the bootloader screen. your bootloader version will show as HBOOT

Unfortunately, you probably should have read a little more, before rooting or purchasing a rooted device. Some people will sell u a phone that they have messed up and you end up with a ton of problems. You might try to head over to xda- developers site, and check out the mt4g section and read some of the great info available. You will need to be patient and don't rush into anything. You have a great handset that probably just needs a little TLC...
