Is data required

Seems very fair, the first thing the phone is going to want to do is sync and use data so if you don't have data on it you would quickly owe more than the cost of a data package.

If you don't want a smartphone don't have one, get a good MP3 player and a dumb phone.

Two of my kids have Android phones with no data plan (data is blocked) on Page Plus. The phones are still very useful without data access. Wifi at home and elsewhere minimizes the impact of no data access.

On the other hand, intending to use data without a plan is asking for trouble.

Yeah Page Plus is different. I don't think VZW will allow you to block data on a smartphone, and if they do but still make you pay for the data plan I can disagree with my previous post. I honestly think that you get much more out of a smartphone if it can do the things it is supposed to do, Page Plus kinda allows you to decide for yourself (if you wish to flash a smartphone to them) while VZW says if you are going to have a smartphone you should use it like one since you are going to be paying for it.

I know wifi at home does eliminate much of a need to use data but what happens when you are used to being able to do something on your phone but happen to be at a spot where you have no wifi access? For you kids checking exchange email may not be a big deal for me it can be ;)

With the amount my kids use their phones, the average cost is $2.50 per line per month. Any plan I can get (even on Page Plus) is 10 times the cost. But for me, the phone would be crippled without a data connection.

BTW, not that it matters for the purpose of this discussion, but there's no flashing involved with using a Verizon phone on Page Plus. At worst it requires manual programming if *228 fails.
