Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

I'm confused, if I close the prompt and open a new blank one, wont it erase all the work done? I'm really sorry that I'm so unknowledgeable, so this may take a while for me to understand

no it will not erase the work you are doing. the tacoroot is installed on your phone already. we need to undo it by issuing the command. so all you will need to enter is the undo command and you are done with that step.

Just got a replacement evo in the mail today (screen cracked on my old one :-( I have unlocked bootloader via htc dev method, now I'm wondering about the s-off... Is it necessary? Is it just the watermark that people are concerned about? Or am I missing something? In other words... is there any functionality I will be missing by not getting s-off? I dont really care about the watermark myself, my phone is out of warranty and I have insurance, asurion, and sprint already know my last evo was rooted, and that I planned to root this one, so is the extra step of getting s-off really important?

Thank in advance, and sorry if this has been asked/answered already :)

you will not loose any functionality. you will be able to do like evey other rooted evo can do. it is mostly the watermark that people have issues with.

yes. I open up adb.exe and it flashes and then disappears.. knew I should have talked to someone before starting.. I just dont understand why everything worked upto step 12, and now I can't even get a command prompt to open...waiting for my phone to blow up

no do not run adb.exe. just press and hold shift and then right click on the android folder you setup initially. then select open command window here option. in the command window enter the undo command

Thanks! However.... I'm having an issue trying to instal this recovery Amon Ra Style Recovery for Supersonic - xda-developers

I had version 3.08 on my old evo, and wanted to restore my nand from that phone to the new one, however, the root process left me with amon ra 2.3, and it will not restore my nands from the 3.08 I had on the old evo, so I downloaded the 3.08 from that thread, and got the "update failed, main version is older" message, I then tried 3.10 (flashing in hboot mind you) and it parsed, and that was it, still got ra 2.3??

lol next step issue.. So it's telling me to rename the pc36img file.. but when I extracted the zip after downloading there were multiple files in the download. Is there a specific one I should be renaming? I have to go to work for a few hours, I will be back to continue.. thank you for your help once again!

no do not extract it. leave it intact. never extract anything unless told to do so.

where can i find the file pc36img??

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!
what PC36IMG file are you asking about? PC36IMG is a generic name. it can be used for a lot of different things. it can be used for radios, splashscreens, bootanimations, recoveries, and ruu's. so we need to know what you are trying to do.

Thanks for the help i was looking for the one on this post! Im trying to root my Evo 4g with the Taco method. The only problem im having is using the command prompt. I get the window from the "android" folder i created but when i enter commands it says device not found. I have my phone on usb debugging, un checked fast boot, etc. Do I need to connect it with HTC Sync first or something?

yeah i forgot to do that step as well. lol

not sure on why you can't restore your old nandroid backups? what does it do?

It starts to restore, then just says,"oops, something went wrong" Idk... If I could find the recovery log, I might have an idea.... I'm guessing different hardware versions or something to that effect tho...

*EDIT* Found the log... Heres the 1st couple lines...

Starting recovery on Sat Feb 25 22:15:39 2012
can't open /dev/tty0: No such file or directory
