App to improve typing on stock Android Keyboard

The stock Gingerbread keyboard is the best keyboard I've used (and I've tried all the "smart" swiping ones).

The best way to improve typing is not to type every single letter of every single word.

Type the first two or three letters of the word you want, and a bunch of suggestions will come up. Pick the appropriate suggestion. More importantly, don't be too careful about pressing those first two or three letters exactly. Even if you accidentally hit a nearby letter, the keyboard will be smart enough to suggest the right words. And after you select the word you want, the keyboard will automatically insert a space. Same deal if you select the punctuation you want.

If your phone doesn't come with the stock Gingerbread keyboard, you can download it here:

Swype is also good. The stock keyboard is trash, I recommend you switch to something else.

I didn't mind the gingerbread keyboard, but I was still faster with SwiftKey because of the predictive text.

With ICS I have no desire to use another keyboard. It is REALLY good. I don't know about an ICS keyboard app, I mean the actual keyboard if you have ICS on your phone.

lol Thanks for the suggestions, but I'm really just looking something to help me become a more accurate and fast typer. I've already tried SwiftKey X, but it wasn't really for me. I haven't tried the Gingerbread keyboard, but I don't really like using the word predictions (unless it's a very long word). So any practice apps you can suggest would be great.

I would like to use the stock keyboard but one thing stops me... No long press option for punctuation. I use them a lot and hate having to switch the keyboard layout for a poxy question mark.

So I use Swiftkey X. It's nearly perfect but the key UI design means I often press too low on these keys. The letters need to be more central.

So I installed the Hackers keyboard. Love it but, again, no long press option for punctuation... Unless I'm missing a setting cause they show the perfect 'portrait' layout for me on the market view of the app.

So I'm back with Swiftkey X, for now...

Swype and Swiftkey X are the two best imo. Both require a "learning curve" before you can fully utilize them.

With swype you have to get used to the ins and outs of it. Swiping to type is unique to Android and not everyone gets it. The newest version of Swype beta is also pretty good at the good ol' search and peck typing (tapping).

Swiftkey X gets better the more you use it. Make sure to have it scan your texts, gmail and facebook to help it learn the way you type. Eventually it will be able to predict your next word with either a few letter taps or without any.

In the Gingerbread stock keyboard, all the common punctuation marks (including the question mark) come up as suggestions on the top after you finish each word. You don't need to long-press or switch keyboard layout.

You can also long press the period and all the punctuation comes up

Thanks guys. Never knew that.

I'm now back using the Hackers keyboard on 4 height mode, cause I can set the long press duration.

:)
