When the Nexus is in 3g-cdma only does it's signal/performance compare to the DX. Meaning does it hold a good 3g signal as the DX does, youall know that the DX is pretty stellar in this department. Not really worried about 4g because I don't see 4g ever being reliable in my area,Verizon can say all they want but 4g does not have the range from the tower that 3g has.

I have had better reception since I upgraded to the 4.03 radios. If you are rooted and have unlocked your bootloader you could try those. If not, just wait for the OTA. As an aside, my signal on the GNex always shows lower than my OG Droid, and D2, but I have no less ability to hold the signal and it doesn't affect data speeds.

I run strictly 3g and I've gotten awful reception with my nexus. I'm rooted and upgraded to the latest radios which has helped a bit, but it's nothing compared to my old dx. I try to run wi-fi as much as possible, and the switch waiting for 3g to connect when needed can be brutal. The radio and the screen being such a huge draw on the battery are the only two drawbacks of the phone for me.

Does anyone in the world have any idea when google will come with these OTA update's. Just so no think's I do no I don't have a Nexus yet this is why i'm asking these ?s.I had a razr for a week and started to have problem's after the OTA.I proly will take a wait and see what happen,s till after a few OTA. Thank's for all your answer's.

DX has better reception and battery life than the GN even if you turn the GN's 4G off.

My Nexus' reception is way better then I ever had on my X. I get a 4G signal in areas I struggled to get 3G (crappy Princeton). My 3G is much more stabled on my commute through I295 as well.

Battery life is about the same with the extended battery on my Nexus. That's with 4g always on as well as bluetooth and wifi always on (which I would use tasker to turn on/off on my X). I don't use the phone a lot during the day though.

My GNex is holding reception just as well as my X did. It seems to have less bars than my X, but I have yet to have any calls drop and the voice quality is better, and they would drop fairly often on my X (due to me living out in BFE). Battery life however is worse, but only on the days that I run into town and I switch to 4G.

I have upgraded to 4.0.4 and I am not even noticing the 3G-4G switch, and the battery life has seemed to improve since I upgraded.

I had a stronger fix on a 3G signal on my DX. I work in a basement and the DX would be able to hold onto a 3G signal longer than my Nexus. Even if it was a weak signal, it seemed to keep it. I'm running stock ICS 4.02 on my Nexus and looking forward to the OTA in the hopes there will be fixes. All that said, I enjoy ICS way more than Blur and Blur never really bothered me too much.

Coming from a DX here. I live in a non-4G area so I leave LTE turned off all the time. I'm in a smallish town, and regularly travel through farm country, and have never lost signal with my GNex. It shows fewer bars than my DX did, but it's usable for both data and voice every time I pick it up.

Rooted, on AOKP and leankernel.

I upgraded from an X2 and definitely have worse reception. I went out in some sketchy 3G areas in northern MN and I had over 55% time without signal. My brother had my old X2 in the same car and was only at 13%. I still wouldn't go back to the X2, but the reception on the Nexus is definitely a downgrade from any Moto phone that I've had (X and X2).

Nexus seems to count the time with zero signal bar (weaker than -120dbm) as time without signal from what I saw. But I was able to use phone calls even when signal bar was zero. I think the signal bar on nexus is for data and 1X phone signal is a little stronger than that.

This post is from a month or so ago, but I think it is applicable to this conversation as the D2 came out after the DX and probably has comparable if not slightly improved radios. I hope this helps.

I have rooted and updated the basebands (both quite simple thanks to these forums :)) so I figured I would provide my story based on my usage.

The rest of this post will not address signal bars/dBM as I am not smart enough about signal issues to have an intellectual dialog, but I will say this, I haven't notice a change in bars or dBM from stock to leaked. That means that the leaked radios don't fix the signal display if it is the issue. The rest of my post will consist of my daily commute streaming TuneIn radio and known dead spots or weak signal areas. I hope this method is more enlightening because if the damn thing works, I don't care how many bars it shows ;)!!

My commute is about 15 to 20 minutes, through hilly central Massachusetts. I stream TuneIn radio through my car stereo during said commute. I have done this consistently since my OG Droid days and have become quite knowledgeable as to when in my commute I would lose my stream. I should also note that I am in a 3G only area so I have 4G turned off.

On the OG Droid, I had one sure fire zone where I got nuthin :( (about 1 1/2 miles) and two areas where weather depending I may or may not lose signal (about 1/2 mile each). I had known about these areas before as I was never able to make phone calls in the dead zone and often dropped calls in the weak zones.

On the Droid 2 the one 1 1/2 mile dead zone split into another 1/2 mile iffy zone and a 1 mile dead zone, which was better, but I was resigned to the fact that I would never be able to stream radio for my entire commute :(.

I've had the Galaxy Nexus since December 19th and updated the radios shortly after I got it. I noticed on my way in today that I didn't lose the stream once, and thinking back, I realized that that had been happening frequently. What it boils down to is that now, my 1 mile dead zone is about a quarter mile iffy zone, and one of the other 1/2 iffy zones is now only a quarter mile.

In summary, since the OG Droid to the GNex I have gone from 2 1/2 miles of having low expectations of hearing my stream to 1/2 mile of where I may or may not, but am not surprised either way. That makes me happy that the damn thing works:D better than even my Motos.

One last comparison, TuneIn used to take ~15-20 seconds to acquire, open, buffer and play the stream on my motos, with the GNex it take ~5 seconds. That may me helping with in the former iffy areas as the buffer may be covering up data signal loss. Again, I don't care because I can do what I want, listen to my stream ;).

Again, there may be real issues with the software behind the radios, but my non scientific study here shows that they are getting better, maybe just not as good as we like them yet.

BTW, I know where all the cell arrays are for all carriers in the area, and no new ones have been added for Verizon 3G in the area. I know this as it is part of my job.

I had the DX on launch day and did the same with the GN. I see about 10% an hour on my GN when at work (heaviest use of the day with no wifi but 3bars 4g) and that what I was seeing on my DX. If I can leave it alone it goes for much longer but I get bored at work and txt/email a lot during the day.

I can't speak much to the 3g side because I have more or less been in 4g coverage everywhere in my area.

compared to my DX i had, No the G Nex doesn't have as good of a signal. Motorola is hard to beat in the Cell Radio game.

I certainly would never argue that Sammy's radios are better than Moto's. Just that radios in general are getting better. I'm sure that current generation Moto radios like in the Razr / Razr Maxx have better reception than the ones in the GNex. I just wanted to point out that I have had better luck with the radios in my GNex than I had with the 2yr old D2 radios that are comparable to the X.

Whoever says the battery life on a DX is better than a nexus is on drugs.

I have had 2 droid x's since launch day (his and hers)
4 of my co-workers also have them.
Try and get 27hrs of battery out of your Dx, All the DX's are lucky to get a full 10hr.

Kinda odd to hear someone say that since the Droid X is pretty famous for having some of the best battery life of any Android phone while the GN has some of the worst...

your getting 27hrs of battery life with your Gnexus? i can get that out of my DX if i shut the data off and not use wifi etc.. other wise the phones last about the same 10hrs i have a standard battery in my DX and a extended in my Gnexus of course i am running floating image and using a IM all day almost so the battery is
being used very quickly oh well that is the way i roll :cool:
