I have rooted and updated the basebands (both quite simple thanks to these forums
) so I figured I would provide my story based on my usage.
The rest of this post will not address signal bars/dBM as I am not smart enough about signal issues to have an intellectual dialog, but I will say this, I haven't notice a change in bars or dBM from stock to leaked. That means that the leaked radios don't fix the signal display if it is the issue. The rest of my post will consist of my daily commute streaming TuneIn radio and known dead spots or weak signal areas. I hope this method is more enlightening because if the damn thing works, I don't care how many bars it shows
!!
My commute is about 15 to 20 minutes, through hilly central Massachusetts. I stream TuneIn radio through my car stereo during said commute. I have done this consistently since my OG Droid days and have become quite knowledgeable as to when in my commute I would lose my stream. I should also note that I am in a 3G only area so I have 4G turned off.
On the OG Droid, I had one sure fire zone where I got nuthin
(about 1 1/2 miles) and two areas where weather depending I may or may not lose signal (about 1/2 mile each). I had known about these areas before as I was never able to make phone calls in the dead zone and often dropped calls in the weak zones.
On the Droid 2 the one 1 1/2 mile dead zone split into another 1/2 mile iffy zone and a 1 mile dead zone, which was better, but I was resigned to the fact that I would never be able to stream radio for my entire commute
.
I've had the Galaxy Nexus since December 19th and updated the radios shortly after I got it. I noticed on my way in today that I didn't lose the stream once, and thinking back, I realized that that had been happening frequently. What it boils down to is that now, my 1 mile dead zone is about a quarter mile iffy zone, and one of the other 1/2 iffy zones is now only a quarter mile.
In summary, since the OG Droid to the GNex I have gone from 2 1/2 miles of having low expectations of hearing my stream to 1/2 mile of where I may or may not, but am not surprised either way. That makes me happy that the damn thing works
better than even my Motos.
One last comparison, TuneIn used to take ~15-20 seconds to acquire, open, buffer and play the stream on my motos, with the GNex it take ~5 seconds. That may me helping with in the former iffy areas as the buffer may be covering up data signal loss. Again, I don't care because I can do what I want, listen to my stream
.
Again, there may be real issues with the software behind the radios, but my non scientific study here shows that they are getting better, maybe just not as good as we like them yet.
BTW, I know where all the cell arrays are for all carriers in the area, and no new ones have been added for Verizon 3G in the area. I know this as it is part of my job.
