Wow. We are truly blessed here in Manchester! The worst of the storms went to the north & south of us: 20 homes were lifted off their foundations in southern Tennessee and a huge tornado was spotted going east on I-40 toward Nashville. What did we get? A couple of sprinkles amid mostly sunshine.

My experience with a tornado was unforgettable: it was night. We were in Opelika, Alabama's (right next to Auburn) historic district. BIG storm. I was on our wraparound porch watching the storm (Darling Bride wanted us all in the basement... I was too fascinated. Suddenly, flashes of GREEN LIGHTNING erupted and I heard the most God-awful noise I have ever heard: it sounded (not like a freight train) like a heavy filing cabinet being scooted across a concrete floor. My only theory was that it was the sound of thunder bouncing around off hail in the clouds... I really have no idea.

Anyway, we were again spared: next morning, NO DAMAGE to our home. Huge trees were uprooted and laid down gently just a block to the east.

I will never forget the green lightning or that sound... which I hope to never hear again.

Was it actually lightning, or an electrical explosion?

My only experience with a tornado was at Kennedy Space Center. We were on one of the bus tours, right in front of the Vehicle Assembly Building. All of the sudden we heard sirens, and off to the east. very near the launchpads, was a tornado. We watched it for a while, and the bus driver received permission to drive into the VAB (its rated to some ridiculous windspeed) if it approached us. But thankfully it headed out to the east away from us.

My university was hit on Christmas Day by a tornado, leveled an aircraft maintenance hanger, perforated the aircraft simulator building, severly damaged the auditorium, and caused the administration building to be condemned, on top of destroying half the university's fleet of planes. It then traveled across the road and leveled an apartment building. But being christmas day and hitting the college and college housing, not one person was injured.

I was seven or eight at the time, but I remember a bad thunderstorm here where there was not only green lightning but the sky was a green hue following the storm as well. I can remember it distinctly because I was at my father's apartment and there was a bad accident nearby and the lifeflight helicopter landed right behind his building.

We see green skies all the time if there's enough hail in the storm. That's one way to know you should stay inside and make sure your comprehensive coverage is up to snuff. I hope everyone's loved ones are fine this evening. Glad to hear you guys dodged the mess, Chief.

If any of you follow severe storms you will have heard of the Andover, Kansas tornado in 1991. I was a senior in high school, my mom was working for Boeing. So I'm home from school, all the warnings go crazy, so I call my mom. Boeing is located in southeast Wichita adjacent to McConnell AFB. She says they've been told to go to the steam tunnels. My best friend and I decided it was going to stay south of us and head to the mall. We get to the mall just in time for them to shut it down due to the tornado. So we're all stuck, bored, in the middle of the mall. We decided to make a break for it just as the hail hit. We got pelted getting to my truck, it was pitch black where we were but sunny off to the west. As I'm trying to drive west, my buddy tells me I have to look at this, so I turned to look and a couple of miles away, you could just make out the edges of that monster. That cured me of any dreams of being a chaser... Fortunately I've never been close enough to hear one.

I didn't have this option checked on before I rooted so I don't know where it is but let me dig around a little and see if I can find something.

Here's what I have found so far for you to try:

Go to Settings > Accessibility > Talkback - check to see your settings on this

If it's happening on web pages as well:

Disable Web Scripts in Accessibility.




I think you may have to choose between having the Talkback on or off though - I don't know that it's able to differentiate between you being on the phone or off.

Chief, with all due respect, I find this to be an exceedingly unfair and inaccurate generalization. I'm not even sure what you mean by "enough of them." What exactly do you find scary about higher education?

Interesting. TalkBack is off and Web Scripts is set to not allowed. So, I turned talkback on and allowed web scripts. I guess i will see what they do.

Maybe I installed an app that does this.....

Morning everyone! Guess I missed all the tornado talk. I called my mom yesterday to make sure my dad was okay (she's in PA right now), they live in southern Indiana. She said he's fine, the tornadoes were about 50 miles east of there.
When I lived in Lawrence, KS, I really want to see a tornado but missed out. We did have what they call a microburst. I was at work at the time and noticed this huge amount of wind come through. It caused a ton of damage, especially to the University. I found this clip on YouTube of the aftermath. It lasted no more than 2 min. We were out downtown after work and the sirens started going off again and there was mandatory curfew. Wild, but nothing more happened.

I am sorry to hear that. I hope she finds a phone more useful for her....as we are going to be doing the same searching for my fiance soon. She currently has a Dinc and refuses to go backwards to a "dumb phone" (her words....) so we are currently thinking resound or nexus for her. I think she likes my phone, but hard to tell sometimes.....good luck on her search.

I also want to say I hope that everyone is safe after this weeks' tornados. The only one I have been through was on base in Missouri, and they had us underground in the maintenance sheds, so we did not see or hear anything...just spent 3 days cleaning up the cars, humvees, tanks and buildings that were destroyed....the maintenance shed we were under got picked up and moved about 250 ft away, and destroyed, as well as 2 of our company's barracks buildings....flat and nothing left.
That was the last one for me...now I just watch Storm Chasers on TV.

Watching the news this morning about Henryville, IN. Incredible, just insane the amount of damage. My thoughts go out to those folks affected. Just looked it up on a map and it really wasn't terribly far from where my parents live.

Ryan, eesh, it's a tough time phone shopping. If she likes Sense, definitely give the Rezound a look. I still have yet to play with a Razr Maxx but that battery life looks amazing. Obviously the Nexus is the best option. I'm saddened by those who have all these problems (looks at Lucky), but mine has been just fine since launch.

I am really hesitant to answer this for fear of starting something that gets out of hand in a hurry, but - with all due respect to YOU, Razor - I will... and I will try to be as diplomatic as possible. :)

When I went to college, the goal was to teach people how to learn. I was taught to try and learn something new every day, becoming a more knowledgeable (and therefore valuable) citizen as time goes by. In doing so, each generation would be in a position to train up the next generation, teaching THEM how to learn and motivating them to do so.

But something has happened. It's like people are trained to FEEL these days, not think rationally. When I engage in a conversation with a young person these days, I am ceaselessly amazed at how little they really KNOW... although they are most certainly in touch with their FEELINGS. But you can't express "concern" or "outrage" and get a good job. You can't FEEL your way to a promotion. Sympathizing and empathizing won't SOLVE anything. And that is either a learned behavior or a lack of a learned behavior.

I'm not saying that ALL institutions of higher education are like this... there are certainly exceptions, but: where are the graduates who learned to learn and think on their own? Why are most folks these days just content to be spoon-fed whatever they think will make them "feel good" instead of finding out if it's TRUE or not on their own? Are they even capable of finding out if it's true or not? Why do I feel like I'm in a dwindling minority?

Let's face it: American education is not what it was even 20 years ago, IMHO. All too few people can name, for example, the person on a ten-dollar bill (and his relevance in history) without looking or looking it up.

I could go on and on and on... but I won't. Let's just say that it is MY opinion that a college degree these days does nothing to remedy the entitlement mentality that so many people have developed: that they're somehow OWED something they haven't worked for; that they have a RIGHT to something they haven't earned; and the worst part is that many people don't know where our rights come from, what the difference between a right and a privilege is; and then have the audacity to protest for more "free" stuff without once considering where all that "free" stuff comes from.

My rambling is concluded. Remember, this is MY opinion as an independent human being, and not my viewpoint as a Guide or anything else related to Phandroid... which is why I hid it. The only reason I didn't PM you the response was because you asked the question publicly and I thought best to answer publicly for the benefit of anyone else who may be curious as to my response.

I guess it's back to Android stuff and whatever else comes up. I would love to continue the conversation... but I am concerned that a Mod or two may intervene out of fear of escalation.

Chief, hope it's okay to respond. While I really appreciate your opinion, I'll say what I think as a youngin.
I went to UNC for one semester before I realized college wasn't for me so I transferred to a culinary school (trade school if you will). One of the greatest lessons I learned (and for the life of me, I can't recall the class) was the difference between "hard" skills and "soft" skills. Basically, hard skills, in our particular case, were ones' ability to cook. Soft skills were those of how to act in an environment, teach people, deal with stress etc. Those were the most wanted skills that employers look for. I can teach someone how to cut an onion, but it's far more difficult to teach someone how to act or change their demeanor.
I think that's how the workplace has shifted over the years and where it's headed. That is why I think higher education is geared more towards teaching kids how to "feel" rather than teaching them who's on a 10 dollar bill (which doesn't matter cause we'll all be using Google Wallet in a couple years :p).
Now, where I really agree with you is the fact that I know way too many people who have gone to really top notch colleges, graduated with great GPA's and work as baristas :rolleyes:. My sister changed her major every year, I have no idea what she graduated with, but she's doing just fine in something completely unrelated to it. My wife graduated from UNC with majors in international studies and French. What does she do? She works in catering... Again it's a well rounded education that includes teaching of life skills and not so much very technical, specific training that helps one out in "the real world".

This has been the comments that have heard from her, and I think a lot of my personal experience....but the only part of sense that she likes is beautiful widget clocks...which is what use on my nexus. So I think she is now seeing that there are other options on phones. She has asked my opinion on the phones, and because of the bloatware on moto phones, I can't justify suggestion the razors. Personally I think she will end up with something newer than the nexus, and since we are on VZW, who knows what will be available in the next couple of months. The other thing is that she uses it as a phone, maps, and the occasional Googling so it has to function for her......of course I have not had a single problem with my nexus....(kicking myself for the jinx..) but I would be concerned that she might get a lemon. Plus ICS is such an advantage we need to keep waiting for another device that she can like.

Just a quick comment on schooling....
while I have a degree in aeronautical engineering, I sell breast implants in an office job. My fiance has a degree in biology....and she sells breast implants in an office job. We both do more accounting everyday in our current jobs, than we were ever schooled in. And alyhough our employer has educational incentives to continue education levels...we have to do it in a study that is applicable to our current position. I am very concerned about going back to school for many of the reasons listed above...but we are also limited in our current positions until we agree to go back for another degree.
I am finding that our employer is more concerned with the social interactions between coworkers than job skills...as a recent interview showed....I was asked only about how a new groups individuals would be able to work with me, what they thought of me, and how did I think I might fit in socially with that new group.....and absolutely nothing about my job skills. I was told that was because my job skills were listed on my resume, they only needed to know if I would work well with others....pretty dissapointing, since that new position was closer to what I do on an everyday basis, than my current job description.

Never owned a Dinc, but I'm sure it's still kicking around just fine. My Droid was on its last legs when I upgraded (though the latest Liquid was keeping it pretty smooth). I'd say get her on a new ROM and wait out a month or so. I know the rumor of the GS3 for April has been pretty much squashed, but it's worth seeing if Verizon will carry (that or a Tegra 3 HTC phone).

Dreadnatty, I'm not saying that hard skills are bad. In fact, they're very important. You DO need to learn how to do things, how to balance a checkbook, how to live a productive life. But so are "soft" skills: like reason and thinking and learning from the past. It was George Santayana who said "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." :)
