Custom Design - Triumph Aluminum Case

$30? pshh id pay the price of a new Triumph for this! You know I dont see any other company making these, maybe you could turn this into a business? I would bet you people would love high end cases like these! Now that I think of it, you might want to get a patent on that pretty quick

yeah patents aren't cheap either.

Well guys I think there has been enough interest in this to warrant ordering a prototype. The problem is I don't have $100 bucks to order one (unless the other 2 manufactures get me a quote tomorrow that is cheaper). I'm also not inclined to ask for your money to get a prototype, seeing as this is the internet and you guys probably don't want to risk your money.

What I may propose is this. We pool money to build a prototype. If every one donated 5 bucks I think we could do this. Then what I think I will do is turn it into a lottery and once i'm done with the prototype I will pull names out of hat and ship it to them. Since the prototype will be in plastic it will serve as a functional case too. (assuming there is no major flaw I have overlooked.) I will also chip in some of my own money because I also want to see this come to fruition. I also have a buddy who knows some local machinists that may be able to get a prototype going for cheap.

I'm open to comments or alternatives to this idea.

It apparently did with Transformer Prime. They have addressed it with a plastic insert on the new ones coming out this summer.

1. I'd like to help with the creation of this in any way possible. For now that means attempting to work out design flaws before possibly throwing away money. I know someone did a teardown of the triumph. Does anyone know where exactly the cellular signal transmitter is so we can try to avoid that as much as possible to just avoid any unnecessary interference?

2. I say we add a dollar or two to the cost of each case to get some free to the devs who give us so much support: Mantera, Whyzor, Ziggy, Mobstergunz, just to name a few off the top of my head.

3. If you could PM me the part/assembly file so I can email the right people at Penn State to see if we can get this done cheaper through the university that would be great, and they might even offer design advice.

sure. I'm going to fillet the rest of the edges, double check my dimensions on everything and then I'll get you the file. I also love the idea of getting some to the devs, they definitely earned it. The aluminum is not ferromagnetic so it should not alter signal strength in any meaningful way.

Here's my thread that has pics of the MOBO... I would have to take a closer look at it to know which one for sure is the antenna although I don't think that it would matter too much.

@bobloadmire I'm up to donate a few bucks for a prototype.

I would be more than willing to pay about $30-40 for one of these, they look fantastic! I'm sure they'd also be pretty durable even without the rounded edges, which I prefer less than the more steeply angled ones. Perhaps instead of rounding them, you could add some simple black/adhesive rubber feet to the back?

What do you guys think about making 4 round depressions in the back side to put 4 rubber adhesive dots so when you set it down it lifts off the surface a smudge? I personally don't mind it the way it is, but your call.

I vote no.
Just something to hang on your pocket and get snatched off. Really though, if some want that, the recesses won't be an issue without the rubber installed.
Hmmm, maybe that's an "It doesn't matter" vote.

@bobloadmire - My brother and I have quite a bit of experience with prototyping, and may be purchasing our own CNC mill next week. Any chance you can send me the files for this?

If I am able to make them, I'll send one your way as soon as they are done.

Your comment sounds amazing! I love how this is really turning from a drawing on a computer to a reality! Thanks minus for the offer

Awesome!

Plus you can do a "stress test video" with your phone in it and see how high you can drop it from!
