Note very Laggy after a full week!

We'll I've had my Note for a little bit over a week now, and while I really do like it...Its become very laggy!

Now I'm not an app monster, and not a memory buff, I have a pretty simple set up, as this is my personal device. The real work horse is my Blackberry Bold which is used for work and gets an extreme amount of action a day.
But as for my Note, its pretty much used for personal reasons, some calls, texting, web use, a small amount of music, and Gmail. Other then that...Its fairly clean. So even with that said, and it not being bogged down by a million apps, its still apparently laggy after only a week.

My previous device, the Galaxy Nexus, as well as the device before it...the Razr, never showed any lag what so ever! Whether it be typing, or just navigating around, there was never any lag.

I'm a pretty quick typer, and the Note can't keep up with me for the life of it. I've tried a bunch of my keyboards along with the stock ones. Nothing so far can keep up! Which honestly may present a problem, what good is such a killer phone if I can't bang out simple text messages?

Plus simple tasks like lite navigating around the phone have made the phone laggy as well. I guess it comes down to the processor, and the combo of touch whiz and Gingerbread. All in all, its not a good sign.

Now while I really do like this phone, it may have to go back to at&t before my 14 days are up. This posses a problem because I've cancelled the line my Nexus was on with Verizon, and nothing else at&t offers is of interest to me.

There is no way I'd be willing to entertain getting a Skyrocket, especially with the SG3 on its way out soon, and the iPhone 4s is of no interest to me at this time either.

My only option my be to check into getting an unlocked imported Galaxy Nexus from expansys and running it on at&t's HSPA+ Network? The problem with that is I'm spoiled by LTE from both Vzw and now at&t! ughhh, decisions, decisions...However, I've heard the speed is fairly good on the Nexus, even without running on LTE.

I'm going to do a hard reset on the Note and give it a few more days, hopefully its just some BS jitters. If not, the plan above might have to be executed.

I have noticed the lag after loading a coupe applications and such. I think the real coulprit is touch wiz and the huge beautiful display. I do find that i do need to manage the apps alot more than I do on my Galaxy Nexus, so i automaticly just kill all the apps everytime im in the phone and i think that helps. So I agree with you on all you claims. But despite that i still think the phone is worth it.

But what I think we be the deal sealer will be when this device gets ICS, i think the lag should dissapear. Even with all this lag this device has been a joy for me to use and i absolutly love the s-pen.

if money isnt a thing to you then I would return the phone (actually i would hold on lol) but see if the nexus is a viable option and maybe save that att upgrade for the sg3 witch i am patiently waiting for also.

Im my area the North east of the US att LTE network isnt as vast as verizons but the HSPDA+ speed are no where near slow and most def beats verizons 3g coverage. i think you wont notice much dif unless you are in a heavy 4glte area. But I think the trade offs are worth it.

but like i stated i think this device will even better when i t gets ICS.

No lag here after owning it since February 20th.

there're two schools of thoughts of killing apps...

1) killing apps free up ram so therefore making the device faster
2) killing apps slows down the device, because the apps you just killed a lot of times relaunch themselves automatically in the background. Launching of app is more demanding than idling of apps.

I preach the latter and only rely on the WatchDog app (yes it's a paid app) to monitor any apps that is acting out of norm and notify me if any alarming CPU usage.

remember ram doesn't work the same on android os than windows computer os.

I'm in NYC...its pretty stacked here as far as spectrum goes for at&t's HSPA + network and they're LTE...

I don't have an issue with grabbing a GNex unlocked right here in the city from Mobile City Online...its about $599....

My concern is how the phone will perform on they're HSPA network. Ex,,,,How YouTube videos play (buffering) how signal strength will be, etc...

Lol...And yes I do miss ICS

I don't have G note, but I noticed that most new Samsung devices with TW 4 has power saving mode in setting. I guess if that is enabled it can slow down things. Never mind if you already unchecked it and it's still laggy. Then like others suggested, some task managing might help until ICS arrives for Note.

I think S3 dual snapdragon and gingerbread in Note LTE is struggling to keep up with HD pixels. International Note with 1.4Ghz dual Exynos seems much more fuid, faster than AT&T version with dual snapdragon. So if you are considering importing GSM Nexus for AT&T, international Note is also option I guess.

Yea all that stuff is checked off...still laggy!

If I'm going to spend upwards of $600 its definitely going to be on a stock ICS Galaxy Nexus...I mean I guess the Nexus can't be that bad running on at&t's HSPA+ network.

Trade it in for another, some gnotes are super fast others not. I do not have one, but from what ive seen in real life some just out of box are barely usable, others faster then ive seen dual core ics devices run after weeks. Can not wait to get one.

I have had my galaxy note for just over two weeks now and I have never experienced any lag at all.

Also worth mentioning, not only have I had the phone for just over two weeks now, but it also been getting a LOT of use these past few weeks, upwards of 10+ " hours a day.

One problem that I have experience though.... My blue tooth has lost its connection to my note and nothing short of rebooting my phone will solve the connection issues :(

I have the note on straight talk and the ATT HSPA works good. Faster than my wimax on my E4GT. I will say that compared to the 4.56 inch GS2 on Sprint the Note has a lot more lag to it. I chalked it up to the screen. NOt a deal breaker, but I guess switching from amoled to whatever the International Note uses is the culprit.

does international note support LTE? i believe the OP is now spoiled with LTE :)

OP, just return that Note and try another one. perhaps there's some strange issue with that particular note.

The answer to this is no.

The international has the Exynos processor and enabled NFC, but does not have LTE radio, while the ATT version has the laggy Snapdragon and disabled NFC, but with LTE.

Hi,
I have has two galaxy notes (one broke) and as far as I can tell (coming from an iPhone 4) its very laggy. On both my devices rendering the shortcuts on the home screen, even without widgets can be very slow sometimes and then fast others and consistently slow when unlocking the phone or even just turning the screen on to look at the time. I also find that after clearing the ram and closing all applications the phone can still be very sluggish and choppy even when playing a simple game like temple run. My first note was rooted and I tried several roms to try and improve the speed to no avail and my new note is not rooted and even don't have many applications installed and suffers from the same problems. It also gets very hot whilst trying to play any game or even just in web browsing in my experience and in this aspect I am experiencing a lot of choppiness in general web browsing even with flash only enabled when required. I seriously hope this is all an software problem and will be resolved by the ICS update but if the ICS roms i've tried are anything to go by (and i know there not complete and may have bugs the final release don't) I've bought the wrong phone. I should have waited a month or two and got the HTC one x. Just out of interest is anyone other than me experiencing problems like this on a stock international galaxy note with very few apps and completely stock in most other ways as all of the reviews and most of the articles i have read seem to suggest these are abnormalities, but from my experience at least its not, but then again I could have been really unlucky and received two defective devices. Any thanks for reading and any response would be great

Ads, thanks for tellingus your experience. Just curious, are you in a good cell reception area? Are you using 3G, 4G Lte or ATT's HSPA? If the reception isn't good the phone will thrash like crazy receiving bits and pieces of data and then having to do it again. I drove down to Florida last week and my phone batteries (for the BB Storm 2) which are brand new lasted maybe 8 hours each. I realized that I drove through so many areas that had weak cell service that must have drained the batteries and slowed down the phone.

If you are playing games in weak areas, wouldn't the extra work the processor has to go through pulling in non game data, affect the other activities.

I'm glad the Note went to ATT now and I am hoping that the one VZW gets will have a faster processor and less bugs.

Biggest problem is that you're used to the slick-as-ice screen transitions, etc with iOS. Hard to compare that to any Android experience without the usual grain of salt.

Reason behind this is because Android multitasks, iOS does not. When you move from one screen to another on iOS, you're only moving through a "picture" of all the apps on the screen itself to another "picture". With Android, you're actually moving from screen to live screen, where all the apps are essentially live during the move, so your not just switching from one picture of a homescreen to another, you're moving a bunch of apps (or even more GPU/CPU intensive, widgets too) to another screen with another bunch of apps and widgets.

Remember, Apple is more nimble because it does less. Android is more clunky from a UX perspective (in general), but that's because it's always juggling numerous processes simultaneously.

This will not change significantly with an OTA firmware upgrade, because again, the "lag" you experience is essentially a built-in part of Android due to how it handles live processes.

Also, killing apps in active RAM is counterproductive; Android OS knows how to handle active processes better than you and I do (in general), and so don't worry about how much of your RAM is free or being used as it will not directly impact the way the phone functions.

There are others on this site as well as XDA who are far more tech saavy than I, but all the above is a combination of what I've learned from them over the years along with own user experience.

Hope this helps or at least clarifies things for you.

Therefore, if all activities keep running, and you have a crappy network and you don't have a good 4G LTE reception, the phone is going to slow down immensely. True?

I believe he's got the International Note so LTE is a non factor.

Also he seems to be commenting on screen transition lagginess which really has no true relation to signal strength, or maybe I'm just misunderstanding where you're coming from....
