Bedside Application for Android

Crackertc -- any luck on the TTS triggering? I just got a multimedia dock, and I can't get the voice to trigger at all any more... or maybe once every 20 taps. I try long taps, short taps, taps near the center, taps near the edges... I don't get it.

Thanks!

Yes, it will be fixed on the next update, sorry it's been taking so long, I've had some personal issues and have been slow working on the grainy details I need to finish for the next version.

For now, it works, but it takes time to say the time, you should be able to long press anywhere on the screen (except where the buttons are below), long press == 1-2 seconds.. then give it 1-2 seconds to say the time. That's the main problem, it's slow to start saying the time after you long press... so you have to be a little patient, for now. Again, I have a fix for it.

Thanks,

Just got my dock (Droid) and using bedside. Works great. So at this point the four Droid LED lights have to stay on even though the clock is dimmed and that the only fix for this (LED hack) is for rooted phones only? Seems like the only way turn off the 4 LED's is to have the screen auto shut off altogether. Have I got it right?

Yes, that is correct. The LEDs not turning off is a bug in Android 2.0+ since it wasnt haooebing before in older android phones.

Question about bedside turning off automatically:

I unchecked "keep screen on." When I test the dock and bedside plugged into the usb port on my computer (or with the unit off the dock and plugged into the usb port) it times out and shuts off the display as it should. When I have the dock and bedside plugged into the wall outlet, the display does not shut down.

Any suggestions about what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks

Also, make sure you go to Settings->Applications->Development and make sure the "Stay Awake" option is UNCHECKED.

That should be it, unless the Dock overrides all of this and is not allowing the screen to turn off but as far as I know, the dock doesn't do this.

Let me know,

There's something wrong there, it should work as it works on the Droid, it should ask what you want to do, Multimedia Dock, or Bedside... I'm going to go dig in the source code, and also my dock for the Nexus One should be in my door soon, so I can test a well.

Thanks for the report

Sorry this is way late Daniel, but I never actually tried it with the N1 dock. I didn't realize it would give you the choice what to do. Very cool.

I did want to let you know about some weird problems I have (and you might be aware of this). Some mornings when I unplug the phone, the screen flashes on, and then right back off. I've had to restart the phone a couple times. I'm 99% sure this is due to the last three options for running it automatically, unlocking automatically, and whatever the other one is. (whether it is all of them, or just one two, not sure) I've turned them all off now, so we'll see how things go. This is probably just an android 2.1 problem, which I think you already knew about, but wanted to make sure.

The other strange thing is that sometimes the brightness doesn't return to normal when I exit bedside. If I start an app or tap my brightness widget, it immediately pops back to what it should be.

Thanks Daniel. I know you'll get to stuff whenever you've got the chance. Appreciate it.

Yes, if you are using a Dock you need to turn off the auto-start option, otherwise it will start twice so when it closes, the other session is behind it, so it's like it never closes.. sorry about this.

As for the brightness not restoring, yes, it happens to me sometimes and its a very strange deal I haven't been able to figure out to be honest, seems like a bug in Android to me since the method I'm using is very well documented and simple and the way I'm doing it is the only way, so very strange, but I'm aware, and I'm looking into it more deeply.

Good day,

I love this application, thanks for this. I loved this feature of my BB.

Is it possible now or in an update to have the ringer on while in bedside mode? I can't hear the vibrations at night as I sleep with a fan on. But the ringer is loud enough to wake me.

Not being awakened by the SMS/email notifications at night is great and if the ringer could be enabled during bedside mode, that'd be great.

I see that you respond very frequently and are open to feedback regularly on this thread. That makes you a top-notch developer in my book. Keep it up and thanks for your consideration.

No problem Daniel. Great app man! Gonna go purchase it for my phone now (have only had it on my wife's).

Hey, what do you mean with the ringer? You mean for calls?
If so, the phone is put on silent so the notifications are completely silent, but if you receive a call, the phone will go back to the volume/ring you had before opening Bedside, so that works like that right now.

It will change a little soon to give more customization.

would be sweet to have a white list for calls too

In the motorola droid dock and plugged into the wall. I have the "Stay Awake" option unchecked and in Bedside i have "Keep Screen On" unchecked. Yet the screen won't power down. I want the backlight to turn off since it's fairly bright even with everything turned down (10%). Just want to tap the screen to have it turn on and see the clock... Any tips?

Thanks,

Thanks,

Very strange, those 2 options unchecked should do it. It could be a 3rd party app? maybe?

I'm working on an update that will let the screen go off and only come up based on touch/accelerometer/sound(mic). Coming soon.

could be... however when it's not in the dock and the bedside is off it will turn itself off... I have to keep tweaking I'll let you know. And that is what i thought. Let me try turning on the bedside now out of the dock and see if the screen turns off. (i'm at work)

try doing it while connected to power (but not docked, only the cable), and also completely off any cable...

also, try checking and unchecking again the "keep screen on" option on the preferences. thanks

no problem, please check my posts above and get back at me with results... i've tested everything but with a nexus one (and a dock) and everything works fine on my end. thanks

I tried it with just the power cord, and it would lock. I then killed all the apps besides bedside and put it in the dock and it wouldn't power down/lock. However if I hit my lock key it does lock. Very frustrating... haha.

So my guess is the motorola dock is preventing the screen from turning off. I unchecked the keep screen on setting on the phone and in bedside. Has to be something with the dock... Anyone else with a motodroid tried this with any sucess? I could just be missing something.

Thanks again,
