ICS on SGSII Epic 4G Touch

Just got this:

Samsung Offers Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich Upgrade for GALAXY S II

SEOUL, Korea – March 13, 2012 – Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., the global leader in Android™ smartphones, today announced the availability of Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) software upgrade for GALAXY S II. The upgrade will begin in the European countries including Poland, Hungary, and Sweden, as well as Korea today and gradually roll out to other markets. Android 4.0 ICS software upgrade for GALAXY Note, GALAXY SII LTE, GALAXY R, GALAXY Tab 7.0 Plus, 7.7, 8.9 and 10.1 will follow soon.

Samsung Electronics has completed upgrading the GALAXY devices to Gingerbread last year by providing software upgrades to both Froyo and Gingerbread. With the ICS upgrade, Samsung Electronics has solidified its position as the leader of Android devices.

Samsung Electronics will also offer Android 2.3 Gingerbread firmware upgrades for GALAXY S, GALAXY Tab 7", GALAXY S Plus, GALAXY S SCL(Super Clear LCD), and GALAXY W from end of March. The firmware upgrades for GALAXY S, for example, include Face Unlock, Snapshot, Photo Editor and others.

"We expect that our customers will enjoy an enhanced experience with their GALAXY device through this upgrade. Samsung is committed to satisfying our customer needs", said JK Shin, President of IT & Mobile Communications Division at Samsung Electronics.

The availability and scheduling of the software upgrade and specific models upgradable to Android 4.0 will vary by market and wireless carriers' requirements.

All the ICS update how-to's mention the GSII 9100, do the same updates and instructions apply to the SPH D710 model from Sprint?

This is the international (european) version of the device. This is actually more similar to the S2 available on AT&T. Sprint uses a different technology (CDMA v. GSM) for the wireless service. AT&T's version is more similar to the networks of Europe.

Technically the Sprint version is D710 Epic Touch 4G

I called sprint today and went to tech. I asked them when they were going to release ics and they told me that they have nothing to do what so ever with it. The guy I talked to says that as soon as samsung gives it to them the send it out right away. He did go on to say though, that he seen a publication saying that the nexus was going to be the first one in line to get ics update., but didn't know when either was going to be released to them. Don't know if this helps, definitely not helping me, but we can only cross our fingers and hope soon.....

Im not sure whay new features will it have or whats the hype about it? Any mind explaining

From what I've experienced from using the leaked ICS builds, the only cool features that I can think of are:

1. Settings button in the Notification Bar
2. The new Recent Apps menu (When you hold "Home") looks pretty cool
3. The new stock browser is awesome
4. The stock launcher (If you switch to the stock launcher from touchwiz) is awesome and really looks like stock ics
5. The settings menu is better
6. Google Chrome is also pretty awesome and FAST!! (Even though it doesn't come with the update, it only works for ICS)
7. Face Unlock is a really cool feature (Unlock your phone with facial recognition from the Front Cam)
8. All of the Google apps are way awesome looking now
9. Voice Actions are better
10. On TouchWiz the home screens scroll infinitely
11. On stock ICS launcher the folder making is easy & efficient (You'll understand if you watch videos on 4.0)
12. In the notification bar if you want to clear 1 notification you can swipe it to the right to kill it. (Same with tasks/recent apps and Tabs in the browser)

That's about the only things I can think of right now. I'm pretty happy with ICS some apps have bugged on me a little because they weren't optimized for ICS but besides that everything has been as smooth as 2.3.6. The stock ICS launcher is my favorite part of it though. I liked TouchWiz on 2.3 but I like the stock ICS launcher much more.

Pathetic

They've been talking about this damn update for over a year and so far only a phone here or there and a couple of tablets have it at this point.

Sales associates all over the grid used it as a selling point on this particular device all the way back SINCE September. Here we are fast approaching the end of march and still zippo.

After all this salivating and incessant talk I'm almost certain it's going to be anticlimactic.

So sick of this stuff from google and the gaggle of carriers they're running around with on the set of a porno, circle jerking.

Look how hard Sprint/HTC pushed their "EVO" devices. They pushed and marketed those stupid things on just about everyone. I see kids at the mall or guys at the grocery store whipping out those EVOs. Most of those variants of the EVO aren't getting this update. Not only that but the jokes just keep coming now that they're walking away from "4G" and rolling over to LTE.

Here we go again. They're pushing this samsung device so hard on people and now some are speculating that we're lucky to be getting ICS and that is going to be it as far as this device. They're already talking Jellybean this and Jellybean that along with Galaxy sIII.

So tired of this nonsense.

The real issue is that way too many obsess over the next big thing. If you're buying a phone for an update that may come, you're buying for the wrong reasons IMHO. ICS not coming tomorrow(or even ever) won't effect how the device works now. Also, sprint moving from wimax to LTE is no issue. New phones will use LTE, but the older wimax phones won't self destruct because of it. AFAIK, sprint has not announced any intention of shutting down the wimax network access. Owners can continue to kill their battery in 30 min if they choose to use it, which is probably the same experience early LTE adopters will have. There are doubtlessly many more important issues in everyone of our lives than when/whether we'll get an update. Obsess on those and enjoy your phone.

I guess my real issue isn't whether or not a particular update is ever going to come down the pipe. Hell, I didn't even know my sII was going to get ICS till I bought the phone and the sales guy mentioned it.

My problem is how both carriers and handset manufacturers are marketing and pushing the android microcosm.

Yes, the touch/4G is a great phone and has the potential of being by your side for a good while.

Hypothetically: Let's say 90% of all customers re/signing a 2 year contract decide in their mind that they are going to hang onto their handsets for the duration of their 2 years and maybe even well after that.
Samsung, HTC, etc would be in DEEP shit if that ever happened and they know this. So they have to move units. Carriers by the same token have to get people to continue to sign their lives away and so they enter into a partnership with phone manufacturers.

Google announces that a new OS code named Peppermint Dick is on it's way. It's amazing and revolutionary. It can satisfy your wife better than you've been able to lately, tell your kids to shut the **** up when they're being too loud and maybe get you a beer. Problem is you need a Hexacore processor phone with 12 gigs of RAM in order to run it.

So you buy a phone that "may" get the update, and the sales guys high five each other and laugh as you walk out of the store.
Meanwhile, a month later, HTC announces their new phone - Mr Incredible Pants and Google is starting to whisper about an update that can punch a hole in the wall.

I guess, it's part of the reason I'm starting to like the iPhone. Yeah, they're overpriced, tiny and spec-wise they don't hold a candle to android phones but at the same time you know what you're getting into for the next year or 2 and you know they're only going to upgrade their camera in the next 8 months or so and put an S at the end of the name.

Wow, you people who are complaining about the new software release please get a grip. If you're that troubled by having to wait to get the "free" update, than go buy yourself an iPhone every year and quit your belly-aching here. My SII is still the baddest phone on the planet and it's just a nice bonus to get the new software...when it gets released.

I'm looking forward to the face-recognition unlock.

Theres a Face App on the Market but it sux...
Just Root your phone and you can have it now...Plus run an ICS custom Rom and see what ICS will really be like instead of waiting...

Took my Sammy into a Sprint Store and showed the Reps ...They were blown away on how my phone runs...

Gotta Luv It...

I love that clip of Louis CK.

As I said earlier, it's not so much about "the update" as it is about the entire culture surrounding android and it's devices.

It's the reason fanboy ret*rds are able to throw around words like - fragmented and laugh at the fact there's a new "iphone killer" every other month.

I just wish these guys would all come together not only for the greater good of the consumer but for this amazing technology in general.

And lol @ free "update"

It's called product support. Google doesn't employ endless rows of developers and software engineers out of the kindness of their hearts. They're making money off this stuff. Last I checked their net worth in stocks alone was close to 200 billion dollars. They don't make a phone(anymore) nor computers so maybe they're making a little scratch from android. Maybe?

If you have time to come here and cry about ICS being... "late?" Then you have time to root your phone and install it yourself. And there's even stock ICS roms you don't have to be rooted to flash, you just use ODIN. It takes 10-30 mins depending if you have the drivers or not, and they're pretty stable now. The Odin way, there's like a 99.9% success rate as long as you don't click anything you're not supposed to. If you're gonna whine about "slow" updates then either get another phone (Android or not) or do something about it yourself.

As a sales rep for a Sprint retailer, I can assure you that if you are getting a phone and anyone promises you anything besides whats in the package you are being taken for. No one can tell you if and when anything will drop. We as sales reps may know about 2 months tops before launch.

There is a reason why they have "used salesmen" type sales people in some of these third party retailers. There are suckers born every minute and they will scam you.

As far as the iPhone is concerned, I think you like Apple for the wrong reasons. They are a bigger scam. Let's play trumpets and have a tickertape for a dual core (LG had the G2X last june and quad cores are about to come out) and a FIXED camera (the iphone 4 camera is attrocious. action pictures? app will never open in time.) Dual core is old news, camera was just to compete and the battery life actually went down. Apple adds one or two features and now that every phone already has that stuff, there is nothing to applaud. iPhone 5 will be the peak of the iPhone line.

Here's my advice. Buy a phone that you see similar models on all carriers. Galaxy, Sensation/Evo/Thunderbolt, iPhone. Do you research and buy what fits you. Name means nothing.

Where are these roms you don't have to be rooted to install?
