Nice! And you can still use the 3G in the phone at the same time? Does this work with other tablets?

That seems a little weird to me. Can you double check on that? I thought SIM card in verizon 4G phone is only for LTE data and voice is done through 1X/3G CDMA radio. Maybe I'm wrong on that?

I'm thinking of doing same thing with Galaxy Tab 7.7" LTE. HD Super AMOLED+ on that tablet seems stunning to me though iPad3 has higher resolution. But if taking out SIM disables voice on Nexus, I should get one with separate SIM for tablet.

Nope. Take card out of phone. Phone no longer on Verizon network. That is until you put the sim back in it.

OK, so to flip this around.. can anyone say if the WiFi only iPad "3" will use an unlimited data GNex tethered? Is the connection stable and reliable? Is it speed limited? Is 3rd party software required? You lose GPS with a WiFi iPad I believe, but then again Apple seems to be doing everything they can to keep Google off of IOS entirely. And nothing so far can come close to Google Nav on Android. The iPad screen is amazing but I am pretty interested in the Asus 7 inch tablet on the way this summer. And I think the best all around solution is using my grandfathered unlimited LTE device (GNex) for ALL non-WiFi data if the tether will work adequately. I see no reason to have 2 plans. But I also presume the carriers will eventually find a way to force me to pay more for the same amount of data, or throttle the amount I can use.

I have to say, its nice that you are able to swap like that freely. Might make me tempted to consider LTE tabs in the future...

I honestly don't see the point of doing this if it disables your phone to just use LTE data on tablet. To me, tablet is mostly for indoor use where WiFi is usually available.

BTW, I got ICS 4.03 on my Asus Transformer a month ago and it literally re-energized new life into this Tegra2 tablet from last year. I thought Honeycomb was good enough for tablet, but ICS is leaps and bounds faster, smoother. So I came to better appreciate how much ICS is better, more polished than older androids.

Are you using a stock ROM on your transformer? The 4.0.3 has screwed up a lot of the people who upgraded with reboots and locking up on boot.

I had couple of random shutdown, lock up on rebooting after first ICS update. That happened only when I was not using it though, like overnight. But after they pushed first bug fix for 4.03, I'm not having any issues on my TF.

ICS for each device might have bugs initially. But the overall improvement in UI speed, smoothness, multi-tasking over Honeycomb is phenomenal on tablets.

The only issue with tethering to your GN would be battery life. Tethering will really drain the battery quickly. So, if its going to be a fairly short tethering session I think that would be fine, or if you could keep the GN plugged in (like in a car on a long trip) that would work. But if you are going to be out of WiFi for 4 hours I don't think the GN battery will hold up to 4 hours of tethering whereas the iPad probably has another 3-4 hours of battery life.

As for getting phone calls and texts on the iPad, there's gotta be an app for that right???? There's supposed to be an app for everything!


Also, are we sure the GN won't work for calls and text with the SIM removed? If I recall, the GN still uses 3G for voice and text (hence we can do simultaneous voice and data when there's a 4G connection. And since the GN has separate 3G and 4G chips, it makes me wonder if it works as a 3G device with the SIM removed.... Maybe I'll test it. Edit: Nope, doesn't work.
