new thread for ics official update release

battery does seem to be getting hammered

The new firmware will have reset the 'fuel gauge' chip - it will take several days of use to recalibrate according to your usage.

samsung could quite easily have pushed the update to unbranded phones.

The unbranded firmware has to be tested and certified problem-free against all networks before release; that's at least five in the UK alone. When it does roll out, I also expect it to be staggered to avoid network congestion or corrupted downloads.

O2 phone but unlocked (by O2 provided code)..

The update will be the O2 firmware, in that case.

i'm a little surprised they put this out over...
...The later DXLP7 firmware which, for me, seems much more stable.

.... but won't be tested and signed-off. XXLPQ will be what they received from Samsung with clearance to test and release.

... opted for SIM free - I kind of smugly expected updates sooner than the "rest".

The fact that 3 have actually rolled out really rubs it in. :D

If it's any consolation my last phone was an HTC on 3 and was one of the last to receive whatever Android version it was that turned up while I owned it.

SRSLY?

When I first got this phone one of the first things that impressed me about it was the battery life - from day one. Is there really some bit of hardware in there that optimises the battery according to the way the individual uses it? Seems pretty unlikely.

Sort of same here. O2 phone but unlocked (by O2 provided code).
But I suspect 'unlocked' does not make the phones sim free (as is sim free firmware), just removes the barrier to loading official sim free firmware.
My firmware is still clearly O2's - CSC:KJ1 (O2U)

Suppose we will only really know once O2 or sim free firmware is released.

I had a unlocked Nokia from 3 on vodafone but tou couldnt remove the 3 add ons. So i suspect that unlocked only means that you can use any sim but not fully unlocked firmware & apps

There seems to be a lot of misunderstanding about the difference between unlocked & unbranded, or at least confusing mis-use of words.

As I understand (feel free to correct me) Unlocked simply refers to the SIM, meaning you can put any SIM in the phone. I don't think (correct or not?) that this has any impact on when the firmware updates.

Unbranded means that the firmware is not carrier specific - ie it has no Carrier bloatware on it (Carrier boot screen, shops etc). So if you want the firmware not to be Carrier Specific - you mean/want Unbranded. It is the branded/unbranded nature of your firmware that dictates when you get the update.

I think! :)

Seems like they made Social Hub worse - the default view is now 'Feeds', no way to change that, and clicking 'Messages' takes you to a mixed view of SMS and Email with no way to change that either. Also when I delete an email despite having it set to show me the next oldest email it goes back to the list view and takes a few seconds to remove the email I've just deleted.

Fairly rubbish. I liked the old one. :/

Anyway way of checking if your handset is unlocked and unbranded? I'm sure its a code to key in starting with #, I'm sure my handset is both, always thought if it was unlocked/unbranded you didn't have to wait for the networks to update your firmware or am I wrong? Will I still have to wait for orange as that's who my contract is with?

"Samsung UK is working hard to bring Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) to our Galaxy S II customers. We are unable to confirm exact dates as the software testing and approval process is subject to several variables, but we are working as quickly as we can. Thank you for your patience."

I really really really hope we don't end up with a situation like the last update when unlocked was so down the list they didn't even bother. Come on Samsung - customer service and all that.

Back in the days of waiting for Froyo on my unbranded HTC Legend, Vodafone released the update before anyone else, including unbranded phones. So it does not surprise me that Three does have it first. There probably has been a commercial agreement of some sort, so that Three get a head start on it, and can hence attract customers who desperately want ICS.

I installed the Polish version of ICS on my SGS II a couple of weeks ago via Odin. Was initially disappointed, as TouchWiz obliterated most of what I expected - so I now run with Nova Launcher Prime! :D Couldn't be happier with it to be honest!
