Ice Cream Sandwich?

Hi,
I am new to Android...I just ordered a Galaxy tab 10.1 and I am wondering if the first thing I should do is install Ice Cream Sandwich. I need to use the tablet immediately for some productivity (typing short docs). Will ICS be buggy since it is relatively new for Galaxy 10.1? Should I just stick with Honeycomb for a month or so until I get more familiar with the tab?

Thanks!

Well you can ALWAYS go ahead and play with it for a day or 2 to get a feel of how it handles and performs then when u have about 2 hours of free time go ahead and root it it and put the ICS ROM on it. You will then notice if you like the performance enhancement over the stock ROM and if you like it then keep it and if you dont like it then just put the Stock ROM back onto it. It's REALLY simple to install ROMs and all on Android Devices along with rooting them(ESPECIALLY The GT 10.1) I am guessing that you do not yet have the Tab?

I don't have it yet. I think I should probably not mess with it right away so I can get used to it, but It also just seems like a good idea to go for ICS right away. But I will wait. I don't really have time right now to mess with these things since this kind of stuff is all new to me.
Thanks!

I have had the tab for about 6 months, decided to put ICS on it this morning.

I cannot recommend it enough, such a big difference from the stock ROM. Even if you don't go for ICS then try something like Task ROM...that is much quicker.

I have also Overclocked the tablet and this has made it much faster and ultimately nicer to use. Before I made the changes I was considering replacing the tab with something else but now I am really happy with it!

You talked me into it. Which ICS ROM did you use. I will root and give it a shot tonight or tomorrow.

Well the CyanogenMod9 ROM is available and completely done afaik except for camera which most devices using CM9 don't currently have support for the camera. It is nice definitely but if u want the camera then go with another ROM. I have also had problems with screen rotation not working while over locked with the over locked kernel. It will stick in one orientation and not leave it but only happens WHEM overckocked. I can have the kernel installed and not have it overclocked and it will work fine though. A, going to go try this right now again to see if the problem persists.

I used the CyanogenMod9 ROM. I found a working link on XDA. It was a bit of a struggle to find a working download due to all the hosting sites shutting down.

I haven't had any issues with auto rotation...I did with the Task Rom but found a kernel to sort it, and I have my tab overclocked (although I don't think you need to with ICS it seems fast enough).

As mentioned above the camera doesn't work but that really is a small price to pay for the vast quality improvement. Good luck!

We're expecting ICS this month, but it may have been delayed due to the battery life issues some devices have experienced. I would like ICS as soon as possible, but I'm not really expecting to see it on my Tab until April or possibly even May. No official word on it yet...
:(

Please don't say that!!!! I'm itching to get ICS on my tab. Do you think Samsung will officially announce ICS or will it just appear one day?

Then stop whining, root and flash an ICS rom. ;)

I fail to see what the problem is.

  • Those who need to be on the bleeding edge, can be.
  • Those who just want to use their devices, can do that.
Both are served very well by how things have been going with the Tab. I know that sufferers of version-numberitis will not be able to see that, but the Tab actually works pretty well with HC.

Not sure how long we will be waiting for the official release, I mailed Samsung Support and received the below. I know this may just be the standard response they send out but thought I would share.

Thank you for contacting Samsung and I have pleasure in providing the following assistance.

Regarding your case, please be advised that there currently is no official release date for this firmware version for your particular handset. As always you can register online at our Samsung UK website to receive up to date news on all our upcoming products and services.

Samsung Kies will also provide necessary firmware updates for your device when they become available.

If you require any further assistance, please contact Samsung again and we will be more than happy to help.

Kind regards

That's for the S-II phone, not the Tab (which will get ICS later). Which is kind of annoying since I have a Nexus S and it should get ICS before the S-II.
:(

I'm not sure about the Nexus S but in the bottom it does say that ICS for tablets will be soon to follow, how "soon" we won't know but just food for thought that the tabs haven't been forgotten about...

This is the response I got when I asked when we were getting the 3.2 update in the UK and then it came a week later so I think it's a generic response. I don't think we'll be getting ICS in a week though, unfortunately.

link to the announcement?

They just announced pushing back the galaxy note ICS update back to Q2 from Q1...
link

Probably a good indicator that the tab's update is probably going to be in that frame too.

Samsung Mobile Press

Doesn't specify any time frame...just soon after the galaxy SII. As for th Note announcement, its possible it may be indicative, but its also possible they pushed back the note to ensure the stylus based operations aren't severely lacking. In which case, it may not hold up upgrades on other devices. Hard to say.
