Galaxy Note Purchase v iPhone 4S for free?

Most interested in opinions from people who've owned both.

Basically I have iPhone 3GS through work and it's time to change. I can get the 4S through work which will cost me nothing (but I won't own it). Or I can buy a Note to use with the SIM card from work. This will cost me around

I own both and as the previous poster stated, it all depends on your needs. As I get older, the need for a bigger screen becomes more important so I'm using the Note more than ever. I've owned every iPhone model since launch and love the convenience of the entire Apple brand, but they're losing me because of their form factor. I plan to go full time with the Note if Apple doesn't offer a bigger screen with the next model.

Thanks. I'm "older" too - well 34 but eye strain in a bother since I code all day long for work. A bigger screen therefore really appeals.

I have to admit the "it just works" factor of iPhone is appealing. But if the note is almost as easy and with a big screen that would really suit me - especially if the audio & video quality is equal (just on a bigger device).

Thanks again.

please be aware that the huge note screen that you love also chugs up a lot of battery.
your usage pattern suggests a lot of screen-on time...so it'll be better if you get an extra battery or power source along with your phone.

i am not trying to be a dick here.. just stating facts.. i love my note and i love it more with an extra battery in my pocket

Nothing dickish about that advice :)

This is another advantage of the Note. I'm pretty sure the battery life will beat my 2 year old 3GS anyway but if I want to replace the battery or carry a spare I can. Same with the capacity. I can throw a bigger microSD card in it if I want to carry more media around. Having options like this is a big plus for me.

I'd love to try it properly before buying but all the mobile shops I've been in only have dummy models - so I know how big it feels in my hand but I haven't actually had chance to play with the OS. In one shop the sales assistant basically said it's too big to carry around, suggested the Nexus instead and then explained that he'd tried a Nexus for a month before switching back to iPhone because iPhones are a lot better. Way to make a sale!

lol I've met salesmen like those in car dealerships

yes you can even have a 64 gig card for all your data and the screen makes watching videos and playing games so amazing

the Os is basically same in all the phones from the $ 100 galaxy y to the mighty galaxy note .
simply try any device running gingerbread or watch the YouTube videos for a feel of the device ,

there are two issues for the galaxy note
1.battery life (easily solved by carrying an extra battery. )

2.one handed typing and usage - my hands are pretty big but even with that advantage reaching all the corners is a pain, but you can find work arounds by changing ur usage pattern or installing various 3Rd party keyboards

everything is amazing about this phone, all my friends were so jealous :p
Iam sure you will love it.

Hi, I've been reading this forum for quite a while now and I'm on the same boat with EndOfLevelBoss. My wife had an IP4 and i got confused whether to go for 4S or note... Finally decided to get a white note on ebay and it will be here by tomorrow or the next. I just hope I made the right decision ;)

Would love to hear your honest opinion :)

How are you finding it? Hope you're having fun with your new gadget.

Hi again, I was checking it last night and comparing it to my wife's iphone4(not 4s). So far I can say that I'm happy with my decision. I just finished charging my phone for 12hours(decided to extend the 1st charging even when battery is full). I will try and check how long the battery will last with my regular daily routine. So far, the phone is quite big but fits well on my hand and it's light weight:).

Can anyone recommend whether i get juice defender or battery xl? I'm currently using the stock firmware... I decided to update the firmware via wifi upon opening the package, no lag issues so far ;)

Thanks in advance!

I think if you come from the iPhone world and have never experienced an Android phone, then you might be in for a usability shock, Samsung software is unintuitive and flaky. I had a shock, and I came from the HTC Desire!

I have two main gripes about the Note:

1) the power buttons opposite the volume control. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

2) It could really do with a sort of "grippy" finish to its edges, as this is one big slippery phone to use one handed without a case. My Desire was tiny by comparison, but it had a nice matt finish that was easy to grip.

Perhaps the only really great thing about this phone is the screen. That's its main selling point - otherwise it's like an older, slower version of the SII with a silly pen. ;-)

But don't knock having a big, slim screen in your pocket to browse and email with. There's nothing else out there that's close in terms of its form factor, so if that's your main usage then I'd give it a go.

It's not a bad phone, just could be better (and hopefully will be when on that day in the distant future we eventually get ICS).
