Is there any apps on the market i can use to get rid of the horrible touchwiz stock sms messaging with the ugly yellow and blue conversation bubbles. Also can i get rid of the messaging icon on the home screen to replace it to something that is like whats on the nexus? (a smiley messenger face rather than an envelope) .

I do not want to root my phone.

Thanks.

You could try Handcent SMS or Go SMS Pro, both free on the market instead of the built in one. I use Handcent myself. It lets you customise how it looks and has other features (such as repeat notifications if you miss a text). As far as I know you can't change the icons for apps in Touchwiz, but if you download a new launcher from the market (you don't need to root to do this, but some more advanced features might require root to work) you can customise more of teh phone than in Touchwiz. If you want your phone to look more like stock ICS than Touchwiz, you could try Apex launcher (again free on the market) which lets you customise the icons used for apps on the homescreens and the dock. If you download an icon pack for ICS (cant remember where I did, but a quick google search should find one) you could replace all the icons for phone, contacts and handcent with the ones you would get in ICS.
Hope this helps

Hi thank you that really helped. I installed go launcher and then found the galaxy s theme on the market which i applied through go launcher. However is there anyway to link the messaging icon to say sms pro or handscent sms? The icon has changed from the touchwiz envelope icon to the new icon via the galaxy theme i installes but obviously when i click the icon still takes me to the stock touchwiz sms conversations (blue and yellow standard touchwiz).

I dont think there is anyway of linking them?

Long press icon you want to replace.
Select delete
Put the sms icon of your choice on the homescreen then drag it onto the now empty dock space.
Long press and select replace, theme and select the icon you want to use from your theme.

Remember to turn off notifications for your stock msg app or you'll get duplicate notifications.

I've used Go launcher and Handcent forever on Android and wouldn't have it any other way :)

Go to settings, applications, manage applications, all tab and find the stock msg app and clear defaults. Now when you press the icon on your homescreen you will have the choice to set something else as default.

I've used Handcent forever on HTC but changed to SGS2 today and can't get rid of the default message app or icon, even following your instructions. When I go to clear defaults, it's greyed out so I can't do it. Have no problem setting up Handcent but don't want multiple icons on screen

If its greyed out in the default messaging app, that means the default must have been set somewhere else. Like Handcent or Skype. You probably have to look for it.

As for removing the icon. I am assuming you mean removing from the dock. Go to the app drawer and tap on edit. You should see icons from the dock appearing as well, and that's where you can remove and replace the icon. This should be for stock TW. I am using Go Launcher and find it easier to do all these adjustments there. Its more intuitive.
