Geniatech Enjoy TV

Hi. I am a new user here and I am interested in EnjoyTV ATV3000. Actually, I am interested in ATV4000 but it seems that it's not available for sale..
But with dvb-t dongle, atv3000 is pretty much the same as atv4000.
Device is supposed to work mainly as a DVB receiver, but also as a media player..

Anyway, I have few questions about the product and I could not find any answers anywhere so I'll ask from people here as it seems that some people have a setup that I am looking forward as well.

First of all, let me introduce everyone with my DVB experience. About 7 years ago I was angry to lousy DVB receivers and bought 2 very good receivers from manufacturer Dreambox (model 7025) and they have server me very well. Dreambox 7025 is a set top box with dual DVB-C/T/S tuners (or one can also mix them) although, I never have had 2 tuners inside the box as it has not seemed to be necessary. They run with Linux and have a frontend called enigma2.

I rarely watch "Live TV" - I usually record my shows and then watch the recordings, this way I can skip the commercials and stop watching if I need to leave and then keep watching rest of the show when I get back. Recording has several options:
- You can select recording to start immediately on the channel you are on and select it to end after current show automaticly, enter duration in minutes or set it to record infidently (till you run out of space). You can also stop any of these recordings when you want.
- Timers list: you can add timers with various options to record shows of your choice, some of these options is that you can set recording timer to renew itself daily, weekly, monthly, and so on..
- There's a smart application that you can give conditions (time, channel, weekday, name of the show or part of the name) and it automaticly adds timers which is excellent, sometimes there's a change in schedule of the tv channel so my show is not going to be aired in same time it was on last week - or my show has not been aired in 6 months and now they got a new season, I don't need to know this as the software notices that it's on again and automaticly records it. Perfect.

I can also record (with single tuner) multiple channels with DB7025 at the same time. Tuner is capable of doing this for every channel in same bouquet - my favourite bouquet has 4 or 5 channels so in theory I could have recording on all those channels at same time.

There are also lot of other interesting specs-- but I just posted the ones that are most important for me. Dreambox also is very expensive and does not support so many formats, so it's not that well suitable as a media player. There's possibility to stream VLC from computer, but that's not a good since I need to make a playlist on my computer and computer must be turned on so I can watch a movie from that device.. And it's also a awful lot of work.

There was a storm in December 2011 that caused electrical problems and other DB 7025 just happened to die. Also second DB7025 also suffered of this, propably memory banks got damaged as it has slowed down significantly, is not so stable any more and.. Well it's been since then in a daily use, but using it is like walking in the floor that has been covered with glue. So a good reason to look for new stb..

---

I have no experience on any android device. My phone is from apple and once I had android phone in my hand but I wasn't able to get keylock of it as propably since I am iphone user, that android phone was way too difficult :)

Let's get on with the story and go to the questions..

1) Cannot find any information about features of HidTV application. Very low amount of screenshots and no youtube videos of it available as well. What actually can this program do? Is there a teletext viewer included? Can you make your own channel lists (so called favourite lists)? Can you record to harddisk inside the box? I recall seeing a screenshot that listed time shifting capability? What kind of options does Hidtv give for recording (compare to options on DB7025, does it have what db has, does it have more or something better)? Is there EPG? What can you do in EPG, can you set a recording directly from there for chosen show? Can you add specific program as keyword to list of programs that are going to be recorded?

2) usb dvb-t dongle seems to come with a remote. Am I forced to use that remote when Hidtv is on or can I use 2.4G remote that comes with the box to change channels and do what ever hidtv is capable of doing.

3) is USB dvb-t dongle with HidTV application capable of recording 2 shows in same bouquet at same time, or can you watch another channel on same bouquet while recording abother?

4) If there's a schedualed recording support.. Does HidTV need to be on all the time for that to work, or can I go surfing web or watch movie from dlna or youtube or do something else?

4) People here have told this is a bad player for media player purposes? Where is the problem? Is it not capably of displaying for e.g. divx/xvids with srt/sub formatted subtitles? Is it not capable of displaying them from DLNA? Isn't android pretty "open" so I guess there has to be software available that can handle dlna better or is this kind of action a no go?

5) UI for TV purposes. Some pictures I've seen have a desktop like screen and some have a UI. Geniatech advertises: Enjoy multi user interfaces, Android default UI, simple media player UI, customized user-friendly UI and 3D UI. Is there anything as the "desktop view" is not supposed to be on my tv :)

6) Some similar android stb's advertise that as an alternative remote controller, you can use your iphone or android phone. Can this be done on Geniatech EnjoyTV (atv3000) as well? What is covered and what is not - can I control choosing TV channels and volume control? What about media player features?

7) Is there any cons and pros that you'd like to tell to the new user? Remember; I have no experience in Android OS.. Should I buy the device with dvb-t dongle or try to save money and buy something else?

Hi vikidroid, skull and all guys of forum...
I have good...great news!!:):):)

I was able to modify, successfully, our 20120111 firmware release so that,
I could apply permissions and fingerprint tricks, com.google.android.maps.jar file,
remove some apps and add other ones.

The error in recovery mode, was due to a not correct signature...
pratically, we must always delete these files: CERT.RSA, CERT.SF, MANIFEST.MF
in: /META-INF
after that, we can make our changes (add or remove apps or other...)

I used Update.Zip Manager 3.0 (by Daneshm90), which is a script tool that permits to create
and modify update.zip files (it has many more functionalities that I haven't tested yet...).

It's necessary Java installed, on your PC: Download Free Java Software
Winrar or 7-zip, and Update.Zip Manager 3.0: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/14513610/Update-Zip-Packager.zip

I made a video of my testing: http://androidforums.com/4170661-post12.html

i'll first thanks you, and take a quick look at video, because i'm not at home, and have no time enough.
but, something that is bothering me - those ceret files, delete them _after_ or before re-zipping?

great work and read you later!
THUMB UP!!!

EDIT: i saw first part of video - remove before re-zipping. OK! looking further

i missed my lunch break! ;-)
at 4:25, from sys/app you removing GOsms and readme (manual file). those are system files, and removing them is not so good if you do not know what is safe to remove and what is not?! am i right?
and from 4:50, you removing apk files from /data/app which are additional/optional? according those removed/lefted apk files, from /data/data also remove appropriate files from step before.
bottom line-all you removed from those folders are same apps that we removed before just after installing fresh system. is that correct?

also, in /data/app we can put apps we want to be installed.

as i saw this on first looking, it looks very easy. just one thing. i saw that you used 0111 update? is that only for testing or you think that 0317 is not good?

Hello all,

I've been reading this forum with great interest. I have just received a Neoniq Intelligent TV box which I believe is the same as the Geniatech ATV1000. I have a quick question. Currently the lowest video resolution available on my box is 480p. An earlier post (much earlier) stated that upgrading Android will also provide 480i. Can anyone verify if this is correct? I have emailed Geniatech but have not had a reply.

Hi vikidroid, answering to your questions, I can tell you that I decided to make
this test with the 20110111 release, because this firmware (respect to 20120317)
has the previous 1.82 Market (that I prefer) and more additional apps, in: /data/apps,
with which I could show better, how to remove them easily.

We must delete CERT.RSA, CERT.SF and MANIFEST.MF before rezipping and always after cleaning out
made by script, when we give yes to the first input (this passage is very important for a correct signature).

I agree with you, when you say that, generally, it's better not to remove system apps,
but in this case, I seem that those two apps aren't system apps but apps inside system folder.

BTW, did you try to modify your Rom?
Let me know...:)

I can confirm that the 2.3 firmware does support 480i. In the display options it is listed as 480 CVBS.

yes, i did customizing, but i didn't have time to try it to upgrade. hope i'll make in these few days.
i also make it with 0111, vith version which notonlytv send me, but, in comparisment with your's video, it is same content. maybe it is difference in one or two preinstalled apps. also, didn't implenet new market. but, it seems that implementing works on same princip-just copy wending app to system folder. i'll see is this will pass ok with upgrade, and maybe do a two roms-one w/o apps, just system, and second with mail, skype, etc.

in any case, i'll try it in a day or two.

just an idea-if this will work ok, and no see reason why not, maybe it will be good that users of this device give some ideas which apps will be good to have installed and to do some really custom rom!?

Any changelog ?? Did you add any tweaks ?
Can I use another kernel ?
Hi skull, as just told by vikidroid, update_2012011-mod.zip is a basic rom:
-I applied both permissions and (2.3.4 nexus one) fingerprint tweaks ,
-I added com.google.android.maps.jar to "framework" folder,
-I removed all optional apps, except for flash player 10.2 and youtube,
in: /data/apps
-I added, just for testing, two apps (android system info, wifi analyzer)
in: /data/apps
Regarding to kernel, at this moment, I can't tell you anything...
...we have just came into the kitchen:)

Two roms...a lighter one, without optional apps (that we can install subsequently)
and a customized one (with our favourite apps), surely, it's a good idea...
The same, I can say regarding to a specific thread, where everyone could suggest
their best apps to copy inside a customized rom, for a more complete device...
(a good thread could be this one: http://androidforums.com/google-tv/413972-apps-android-tv.html)
Any suggestion is welcome...

Oh come on.. Anyone to answer my questions about tuner and hidtv ???

I think the problem of no esposes is that no-one, or very few, have had experience with the ATV 3000.

From your comments/info requests, the dongle and the HiDVT app are different to that of the ATV2000.

And the ATV 3000 appears to be different to the ATV1000/ATV2000 units, and their clones, most discussed in this post

Ok - thanks. I readed this whole thread before posting and I am pretty sure that there were people here who had the setup that I was talking but maybe they no longer visit here :(

How does the setup work with atv2000 then?

Hi Jake! First of all my apologies, because I've seen your message days ago and I've no time until now to give you some answers.

I was waiting for the ATV4000, but it seems that geniatech have not a release date.
After some reading about compatibilities I bought an ATV3000 and the DBT dongle Geniatech MyGica T119 DVB-T. They works!

I think there are only two versions of HiDTV app. One for ROMS based on android 2.X and the last one HiDTV1.9.1 for android version 2.3.
I've used always this one HiDTV1.9.1
With stock ROM the TV app was a little inestable, a lot of glitches in the image, and timeshifting sometimes unresposive.

With the last ROM update (update20120317.zip) the TV app works very well, no glitches, and timeshifting always responsive. Althought the app design is not the best for user experience.

After som tryouts I've a very stable device, all the functions working, and some lessons learned (avoid task manager apps, avoid cifs mapping over large disks, keep the installed apps at minimum)

About your questions:

1
Not sure at this moment about teletext, I think the response is there is NO teletext.
You can select your favorite channels, but not possible to sort. When you go up and down across the channels only the favorites are shown.
You can activate timeshifting (limited to 10, 30 or 60 minutes)
It is not possible to record.
Timeshifting uses the SD card, not possible to select the HD.
There is a limited EPG. Not possible to recording schedule.

2
All the functions are used from the ATV interface, there are not direct keys, the remote (ATV one) has to be used to interact with the screen menus. The remote shipped with the dongle is to use the donge with a PC.

3
No recording possible, not possible to record two programs. I think that the dongle is a single tunner.

4
No scheduling at this moment.

4 bis:
I play music and movies from HD and using SMB shares, and sometimes with DLNA, always over wifi.
Always working, indeed with a very large 1080p files (9GB).

The secret is the app..
After a lot of tryouts I found MX player the best. Depending on the kind of file is better to use the SW decoder over the HW decoder.
For music I use DLNA, witha twonky media server on the NAS.

5
Desktop. The one provided by mediatech sucks. I will use Desktop Visualizer to develop a nice UI.

6 there is a lot of remote app to use from Iphone or an android phone. In this field the ATV is an android device like others.

Conclusions. I don't know how geniatech is not working more on the HiDTV app. For sure it will be simple to improve the EPG and allow to schedule a recording, OVER the HD !!!
Also a fully featured UI will be nice to have!
I cant' believe that they are unable to release the ICS version yet...! The beta is impossible to use...

From my experience, there is not difference in the ROMS for the ATVs 1000, 2000, 3000

regards

Thank you patanplace for great answers as this settles it that atleast currently I am not going to order ATV3000. It is kinda shame, but it would had been even worse to spend money to a device that doesn't suite my needs..

One more thing about recording another channel(s) - It's not necessery to have multiple tuners for that as technically dvb tuners should be capable of this when channels are in the same bouquet - it means that channel providers have partially same frequency or something like that as currently I have a dreambox like I told and even though there could be more tuners than one, I only have one because I don't need dual tuner as I don't have a pay tv card and free channels I watch are all in the same bouquet - anyway, most stb's don't use this feature at all for some reason..

My multimedia player is also quite old (It's a Kiss DP-600) and partially idea with this was that I would had replaced both; my multimedia player and dvb receiver with a single device and ATV3000 seems to be capable of replacing my multimedia player, but so is so many other android mm player and actually I am looking right now a digital tuner so I'll pause with this project for now. As you said, it's really a shame that Geniatech hasn't made their hidTV any better. :( But I cannot be only one thinking about these and I am pretty sure that your answer is going to help everyone looking answers to this question so thank you :)

BTW, did you try to modify your Rom?
Let me know...:)

first, little late, happy easter!

so, as i had a problems with my health, i didn't make to try earlyer this rom mod. today, i finally do it and all works fine!
with a difference than gio's mode, i put .apk files in rom, and after instalation i just need to check is all updated in market.

there is no much difference of procedure. just put .apk files in \data\folder.
i'm not jet sure about names of .apk files, so, i just make them all "name.apk". no, version numbers, and no spaces. or put dots instead spaces, or make name one word. and, those apps will be under "user installed apps". if you want, you can make any application system app, just put install apk file in \system\app\ folder.

when i'm in sys-app folder, it can be safely removed "appinstaller", "file browser", "readme", "gosms". even you can remove "aml2d launcher". there is one app that i didn't verify is it safe or not- "samba". i think that is that "network" app, for sharing files with windows and with local network.

if someone see adobe flash player in update section of android market - DO NOT update it!

bottom line, this procedure works, and now is so easy to make very personalised rom.

just need to find out how to make backup of installed rom. there is too much to set after installation. titanium backup doesn't work every time.

EDIT:
in mean time, i used to update flash to 11....8, and as avirex send me a question, now i must compare those two versions. i'll wrote which is better.

apropos system apps, "aml2DLauncher_mbx.apk" can be deleted (that is that launcher with table and tv. kewl look, but not much usage (at least, for me)). "samba" is also deletable. there is better network file manager "x-plore".
