Guys I need serious help IM a long time apple user from Iphone 3G to Iphone 4 and went with this galaxy S II as my new upgrade and Im very disppointed. My battery doesnt last for nothing.. I called Samsung and they had me turn everything off except for the power button and still no battery left by 3pm... is there any tricks or software update or something I can do for this??? right now Im at 18% that to me is ridiculous?

Thanks,

18% doesn't help us to much. How long has the battery been running without a charge? What apps are you typically using/leaving open? Do you always keep things on like Wifi, GPS, and Bluetooth, even when not in use? I have had 2.3.6 on my phone for a while now and as long as I keep things like WiFi and Bluetooth off when not in use, I can last a day easily (moderate to heavy user).

the battery been running since 4am this morning and GPS is off and so is WIFI my bluetooth is on but very little phone calls and light texting. and I always make sure I go into my active applications window and clear all and also settings, applications, and running services and stop all active apps. its seems rediculous to do but thats what I do. Why have a phone if you cant use its full capabilties and have to shut off things?? I know theres theses wars going on that there are apple haters out there but being a apple user before this phone I never had theses issues... Just disappointed.. How long has 2.3.6 been out and has anyone heard of any updates down the pipeline coming?  :(

I definitely wouldn't expect the same battery life as your iPhone 4, solely because the SGS2 has a much larger display. But having said that you should definitely get a bit more out of it. The problem probably comes from all the bloatware running in the background and the only thing you can do about that is root the phone and freeze the apps. I agree 100% that you shouldn't have to turn off a bunch of stuff to make your phone last, whats the point???
But a few tips:
-Turn on auto brightness, or turn the brightness down.
-Sync secondary accounts less often. I have my facebook and secondary emails synced every hour where as my gmail is as often as it can.
-Turn down the screen time out (15s-30s).
-Black backgrounds are suppose to help since SAMOLED don't turn anything on for blacks (which is why blacks are amazing on this phone).

I don't know what my battery life really is because I do charge it whenever I can but I can go pretty long with moderate use (not a full day but a good 12-16 hours).

I did your suggestions.... what else does ROOTING due or its advantanges is that like jailbreaking? Is it easy to brick your phone by rooting? And what website handles this?

Rooting is Jailbreaking but for the Android ecosystem.

How To Root:
How to Root AT&T Galaxy S2! [SGH-I777] | Galaxy S2 Root

It allows you to install custom roms, enable tethering and mobile hotspot. For example right now I am running this rom:

[RoM][UHLPE-4.0.3-ICS]SHOstock2 v1.1[04/03] - xda-developers

Which is ICS with Touchwiz but it's debloated with a few other optimization's. So far I haven't had any issue with it, my phone runs very smooth. I would do some research to see what the risks are of rooting before proceeding. I am an amateur to rooting and it was pretty easy to do on this phone. I just finally started getting into ROMs which aren't terrible hard to install either.

i can get a full 2 days on my phone with 'normal use'. A few dozen texts, say 100 minutes of voice time and minimal playing.

That being said, I leave off bluetooth, wifi, gps and manually sync.

GPS and WIFI hunting will kill any cell phone battery quickly. Bluetooth shouldn't be that much of a drain.
Also depending on if you're on a 4g setup or at a fringe area of signal will quickly drain your battery as well since it's always searching.

As for syncing, I choose to do that manually since i don't need my phone reminding of something instantly.

Android 2.3.6 was an update that came out in December. Many of us saw a huge drop in battery life immediately (read the long battery life sucks thread). Members of this forum eventually related the excessive use to Android OS and WiFi. For many of us the annoying task of turning off wifi when not in use restored decent battery life. Some people have followed instructions in that thread to roll back to android 2.3.4 and have had their battery life restored. I'm among the hopeful few that they built a fix into the upcoming ICS upgrade. We have flooded Samsung with complaints about it, and they've been non-responsive. So with wifi off and normal usage, my battery lasts all day - 16 hours at least. If I turn on wifi and sit it on my desk and do nothing, I'm down below 25% within 4 hours. Sorry you got sucker punched with this glitch... it really is a fantastic phone otherwise, and hopefully the fix is coming.

The culprit on mine was voice command and not Wifi or Bluetooth. I leave those running. I get anywhere from 30-100 emails a day on the account, a couple dozen texts, and have the alarm go off every morning. The battery lasts 2 days after a full charge. After reading a couple of different strings about this issue, I think it might be helpful to compare serial and batch numbers of batteries and/or phones to figure out if batteries or phones from a particular locale are the problem. I have not rooted.
