It can't become so hot that it'll show you that warning unless you use it in direct sunlight for an extended period of time while gaming, if it did give you that warning in normal use it would be approaching a temperature which is outside of its thermal specifications, and it'd be a real problem.Yes, you are right that it's perhaps the wrong word as it implies it could damage the device. However, while it may be within limits - it CAN cause the device to freeze and bring up the warning to let it cool down. Secondly, it can under extreme load actually drain power quicker from the battery than the charger can top it up.
That is an issue and the problem developers are talking about. Nobody wants to release an app that causes either of the above problems.
The developer has nothing to do with it, and they can't solve either of those things. Any 3D game will make the device quite warm, I don't see why the developers would worry about it.
The A5X only draws at most 3 watts per hour, it's the display which is drawing the majority of it, at 7 watts per hour, at 100% brightness.
I own an iPhone 4S and I think it actually gets hotter than the iPad 3 when gaming, but it's never bothered me before.
