run for your lives 5k

Awesome. Sounds great. Damn zombies - don't trust 'em for a second.

Here's my tip. Push another survivor down, the zombies will be chompin' on his guts and brains, and during that time, you should be able to get quite a gap between you and the herd. Stay safe.

(Also, be in running shape and ready for obstacles. ;) )

I'm signed up to run the Boston race in early May. Should be fun dodging zombies. Too bad I can't double-tap them.

As for training, I'm assuming that for obstacles, I'll need some upper body strength, focusing on pullups since there appears to be lots of climbing involved... And for dodging zombies, some plyometrics and core work for more agility and flexibility.

But rule #1: Cardio. I'm actually using this run as a training springboard for the Providence Rock & Roll half marathon later this summer.

You runners amaze me. I can't do it. I've been in a mood lately to punish my body. No clue why. So I've been on the treadmill 20-40 minutes a day doing a walk/run. It kills me. I can't walk afterwards and I'm sucking wind half way through. I can't run more than 10 minutes at a time though before I'm just exhausted.

which means you're running too fast for your current ability. Slow down your pace. I bet you can walk 10 min with minimal effort. So somewhere between your current pace and your walking pace is where you should be.

If you don't like that solution, another way to ramp up is to do a combo of run/walk. Try 3min run followed by 2min walk. Over time, you can reduce the walk time and increase the run time. Eventually, you'll be able to run at steady-state for a long time.

From there, you can work on steadily increasing your pace.

Baby steps. The key is consistency. If you keep at it, you will get better.

What I've been doing is walk 10 mins, run 10 mins or some similar variation. I walk at about 2.5 mph with the treadmill on an incline. I run at about 4.5 mph with the treadmill flat. I find I sleep like a log when I'm done.

I used the C25K app to boost my training for my 5K. The end of January, my first week regimen was 60 seconds 5mph jog, 90 second 3mph walk, and I was dying at the end (I weighed over 280). Last friday night I did 30 minutes straight of jogging for a distance of 2.6 miles, basically a little over two months later (I now weigh 260). I have a long way to go, since I finished my first 5K 10 days ago (not a zombie one, unfortunately), and am planning on entering a half marathon in November. And it has been painful. But so worth it, for me, and for them <----

what are the rules for the zombies? are they able to run? or climb? or.....??

So you can sign up to be a runner, or you can be a zombie. There are two types of zombies: slow zombies and chaser zombies.

The slow ones generally stay in place, or they move very little. They might be camping a spot, sometimes hidden, or they might be guarding an obstacle course.

Chaser zombies can chase people, but they are constrained to a certain area.

I think there will be more slow zombies than chaser zombies.
