Hi all

Basically i have read through the root section and am still a bit confused with flashing roms. I have downloaded CWM From the market and installed it and am currently doing a titanium backup of all data on the phone. as far as im aware i next have to do a nandroid backup which i shall do now. I have decided i fancy giving the "AndyX Rom v9" ago. The thing that im worried about mostly is bricking it as i have no idea about kernels or anything or if i need one etc. Is it just as simple as putting in on the internal card and flashing it. This phone has never had a custom rom installed so is there anything else i need to worry about? Any help appreciated. Sorry for being a noob but we all have to start somewhere and id rather ask now than wreck everyones head because i brick my phone lol

G'day Craiggers,

So you're doing a backup using titanium? That's a good start. Once you've installed AndyX ROM v9 you can restore using Titanium, but make sure you only select 'restore missing apps+data' or else you'll run into trouble.

I recommend backing up your SMS as well, since you will have to completely wipe your data to install a custom rom. SMS Backup and Restore on the Play Store is a good way to go.

Regarding the nandroid, you can boot into CWM recovery (turn phone off then hold power+home+volume up until the SGS2 logo pops up OR use the app you downloaded) and make a nandroid backup if you wish. Then if you don't like AndyX, it's easier to restore the nandroid rather than re-flash your current firmware and restore your apps manually.

Next, make sure your download of AndyX v9 is complete. If you're not sure you can check the size against the one I have in my dropbox mirror (or redownload it from there to be safe, since uploaded.to isn't reliable).

Once everything's backed up, boot into CWM recovery again and do the following:
1. Wipe data/factory reset
2. Wipe cache partition
3. Wipe dalviik cache (in 'advanced')
4. Wipe battery stats (in 'advanced' too)
Repeat 1-4 just to be safe, then go to the main menu and go 'install zip from sd card -> choose zip from internal sd card' and then find where you saved your file to. I use the 'download' folder of the internal sd card. If it's on your external sd card (if you have one) then you need to go to 'install zip from sd card -> choose zip from sd card'. Once you've found it, select it and scroll to yes, then it will install!

Hi Kie

Thanks for the detailed reply! Really do appreciate it. Just after getting CWM installed after using the cf-root method becuase it wouldnt boot into cwm with just downloading rom manager from the marker. Nandroid backup is currently running as i speak and is roughly half way across. So if i have this right, if i dont like this fw i install i can just restore the nandroid backup and my phone will be back to gingerbread like it had never changed? This whole custom firmware is all new to me. When i had an xperia x10 the bootloader hadnt been cracked lol! Appreciate your help buddy. (p.s. i was quite surprised i managed to get the right cr-root kernel by myself lol)

Sounds like you know what you're doing my good mate! Sorry about the confusion with CWM app, I thought you had the app that came with cfroot already! Rom Manager just never seems to work :p

You're correct! When you restore your nandroid it will appear exactly as when you made the backup!
