Help No(w) update for sim-free UK S2

I'm beginning to think someone at Samsung forgot about the unbranded SGS2 in UK update

Like everybody else I too am waiting for the update to ICS on a unbranded model(I9100XEUKH2).
I was under the impression that the unbranded models would be released first before any network, although it seems 3 and O2 are now getting the update?.

I know that there is the usual pros and cons with an update (I had a few issues after updating my Asus Transformer to ICS), but on the whole I'm looking forward to it, and wish something would happen.

Strange how if you goto the Samsung UK website, click Support, then downloads, then choose Galaxy S2, it takes you the download section. One of the downloads (dated 19th March strangely) is a user manual for ICS.

Maybe week commencing 19th was for the manual

Samsung did release ICS WC 19/03/12, they released it to the carriers so technically they did not lie,

Im guessing but they may not have released it to un branded as a few are reporting some issues, im more than happy to wait a little longer for them to iron those out then release a bug free version, rather that than update & find that im having problems and stuck running with a buggy phone for a few weeks while they patch the problems and need to install an updated version later on.

The (XEU) UK update is contained in a Multi CSC Polish release.

It can be downloaded and installed from XDA. I have it running on my phone XEU and its great ! I have 1 issue with the e-mail app not updating now and then. Apart from that its good + I did a full wipe so start fresh.

Why Samsung haven't got this out separately I have no idea ... because its there NOW!

Incorrect. Please don't confuse other users. You said it yourself:

XEO (Poland) Also has CSC (CPW, DBT, ITV, KOR, XEF, XEU)

On other words it's the Polish regional update hacked to include the XEU CSC. That is not the same thing as an official XEU update via Kies.

It says official updates - the Polish official has multi CSCs contained.

Apart from not being released on Kies - there is no difference. Works perfectly on my UK phone.

OK, the unlocked version has to be tested against Vodaphone, O2 and all the rest but I would have thought that the carriers would take the released XEU version and test that to create/release their own version.

I am disappointed that I have an unlocked phone but still no ICS but I do put a large part of the blame against Samsung. There was leaked info about a 1st March release (They could have officially denied it!) and then last week a vague announcement that it would be week commencing 19th March - I can't believe that last week they didn't have a good idea of the release schedule. I would have no problem with them announcing a release schedule and adding that it would be +/- 2 days (or something like that).

In the PC world we live in nowadays a lot is spoken of 'managing expectations', Samsung are absolutely not doing that and in my opinion seem to almost encourage misinformation - but they do make good phones!

I'm glad & hope that the Europe/UK version will be better than the other countries. Its crap and buggy. I'm happy to wait.
OP should change title. They aren't supporting the sim-free its just on its way.

It's not the official UK release. There are a lot of "official" firmwares that will work on our UK phones. Doesn't mean that our phones were the target for it (and hence why it wasn't released).

Erm, week commencing 19 march means the week starting 19 march. i.e. 19th march to 25 march. I think its you who are having difficult understanding. Easily done though with the utterly dire comms from Samsung.

What I'm confused about is what exactly 3 and O2 have released in terms of ICS for their customers. So first of all, Google test & release stock Android ICS, then it goes to the OEM's, and Samsung take the release overlay their bits (ie. TouchWiz) test it and then it goes to the unbranded phones & carriers, and they do their bits (ie. bloatware). The carriers then test & release to consumers.

So, if this is the right process - and the middle bit is not complete, ie. Samsung haven't finished testing their release, how can the carriers release ICS. The options I can see are:

1. Carriers released an incomplete/untested version of ICS + Samsung bits to their consumers - Hard to imagine they would do this

2. Samsung have completed their testing and are happy, but are giving carriers a head start for whatever reason (such as wads of cash)

3. I've got the process all wrong and I'm missing something? Although with my old HTC Desire, this was exactly the process....

I'm not going crazy or anything, and I don't mind the wait, but I'm just curious about this current situation...

pk1209 - totally agree. For my money, your option 2 is on the button as 1 would surely risk litigation? Samsung have form in this area from before. What is it about mobile phone manufacturers that makes them so utterly appalling at basic customer service?

I can't imagine wads of cash being thrown around - being first out of the block with a new version of Android simply isn't worth that much. How many people take this into account when choosing a network? A handful of geeks, no more. I wouldn't and I'm a geek.

I think it must be as follows:

1. Google release ICS to Samsung
2. Samsung add Touchwiz/bloat to ICS, hand over to networks
3. Samsung and networks test with the network hardware to make sure everything's fine.
4. ICS is released when network testing is complete.

Since Three and O2 only really need to care about it working on their own hardware, their testing is quicker than Samsung's, who need to make sure it works on all the networks. Also, Three released a slightly older version, one that perhaps works fine on their networks but not on others, which meant they could get a slightly older version from Samsung sooner.

Sounds like a complete made-up excuse. Why on earth would Samsung need all network operators OK for unbranded phones? How come Samsung are the only manufacturers to do this, and even then why only in the UK?

Sorry, but this is either completely made up, or Samsung are inept, or Samsung's customer services are obscenely incompetent. Whatever it is it is not an explanation or a reason. 0/10 - do try harder Samsung.

They need the network operators to tell them that it works on their network. As unbranded phones could be running on any and all networks, it needs to be tested on all of them.

Why this only seems to be the case with the SGS2 and in the UK, I don't know.

I already said this on another thread. Samsung have already decided not to update ICS for unbranded phones because there are problems with handset. They only doing it for carriers because it was part of their agreement with them.
This is also the same reason why we didn't get 2.35 or 2.36 whist the operaters were updating their customers.
You only get ICs for new handset which were really tested and made for ICS.
The only way for you all to do if you don't like Samsung treat you all badly, don't buy the Siii. buy a different handset. afterall these phones only last about 3 years before they fail. :mad:

Again, cite your source(s). A delay has been acknowledged, something that is unfortunately becoming commonplace with ICS on several different handsets. I don't remember ever reading about "no update", whichin any case seems highly unlikely given that it's available for some regional unbranded handsets.

How exactly do you "make" a handset for ICS? All GT-i9100 models have the exact same hardware specification regardless of whether they are branded or not. There is absolutely no difference (other than the installed firmware) between your unbranded handset, assuming you actually own one, and mine that came with Orange firmware.

The only way for you all to do if you don't like Samsung treat you all badly, don't buy the Siii. buy a different handset.

Riiiiiiiiiiiight.... so your solution for those who are annoyed with the delayed GS2 update is not to buy a GS2? That's a bit illogical isn't it?

So we've all got another two years to look forward to then, seeing as the GS2 hasn't been on the market a year yet.

I'll be honest with you, swingman. You're coming across as nothing more than someone with an axe to grind, spreading whatever FUD you can to discredit Samsung and/or the GS2. So I'll ask you again - either cite the source(s) for your claims or stop making wild allegations that do nothing but further confuse the issue.

I am not any fruit company fanboy. I use lots of Samsung products including SII, TV, Home cinema. Iwas aslo waiting for ICS. But truth hurts. So you didn't get interim updates? Read the article in 'Samsug Tomorrow' by 3 musketeers.

It's a general android issue and not isolated to one manufacturer. And this issue is expected with the level of software and hardware fragmentation that android has.
It will be a few more months before the software fragmentation lowers due to updates from all manufacturers.

I am an ardent Android fan and had no loyalties towards Samsung before the S2, but it's and amazing phone and the work done by Sammy is commendable (very apparent from nearly daily leaks at one point of time

).

If you compare the updates that you find on the S2 with any other manufacturer or model, it will be self evident to you how frequent updates have been made.

But sadly due to complications of SO many variants and even more varied carrier listing and regional diversities interim updates are hard to come by for every handset.

But buddy you are using an android handset at the end of the day, that too a fine piece of work called the S2. And you have probably the largest backing of developers among ALL handsets.

so connected my GS2 to my pc today to back it up. Currently at version KI4:KI1:KH2(XEU) and it has popped up saying there is a new fiemware, not sure it will be ICS yet but LKAXEU is available for unbranded.

im unbranded so maybe this is the ICS one
