[Official] Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE Pre-release thread - Sprint official launch is Saturday, June 2

The Sprint return window is only 14 days now, this changed last fall as part of the end of the Premier program. I still suspect the phones to be at least a month apart, however.

Well, I might have been wrong about the Nexus being 1 week later than the LG because rumors are going around that it'll be the same day:

Best Buy Leak Reveals Expected Sprint Galaxy Nexus Stock On April 22nd, Confirms Similar Rumors

So, maybe the LTEvo will actually be in late May instead? Or possibly even sooner than that because of the new 14 day exchange window?

As I think about this more, I realized, didn't Sprint just barely introduce that 30 day "trial" thing last year? Or was it the year before?

Drex,

I got my Photon on September 1, 2011. I had 30 days. I used mine to exchange twice until I got my current Photon that works like a dream. I think that it was reduced to 14 days only a couple of months after that.

Wow somehow I missed this phone last month. I'm curious to how this one will be marketed given how badly they dropped the ball on the Photon which to me was clearly the best phone outside of the iPhone for Sprint.

This may be correct! But Motorola has to push and set aside funds to heavy advertise, like the have a special relationship with Verizon and Sprint and HTC has theirs!

Thanks for the update, simcha. I don't mind that it changed to 14 days because usually I'll stick with a phone once I've made a decision on it. Although, it would've been awesome to have that 60 days. I'd possibly be swapping out from HTC, to Motorola, to Samsung...and finally decide before the 60 days are up. Talk about a thorough "test drive." That'd be amazing!...LOL. Oh well. It was good to dream of that possibility.

I just commented as well, his ignorance was mildly assuming!

This is my comment.....

Wow you really sound dumb dude, as the Evo 4G sold more than the Samsung Instinct and the Palm Pre in their first week, for it's first day! You have no basis on your "Opinion" that the EVO 4G LTE will do bad because it "ugly" and the name is to long!? That let anybody write and hire anybody!

What are some of the things you hope improve with the new Evo. I am coming from the original Evo and here is my list.

Contact Photos becoming blurry after every update/synch to Gmail - This is ridiculous and should be corrected on the new phone. Yeah its minor, but its annoying...especially when other phones dont have this problem.

Low space memory - No matter how many apps I delete this warning always pops up. Always getting low on internal memory. Again, this is utterly ridiculous.

Verizon and ATT are pumping the radio and tv advertising with LTE commercials in Atlanta. The term LTE is usually proceeded by blazing fast. I think that's all the consumers need to know. Sprint will get free marketing in regards to the term LTE before they sell one LTEvo. Not sure what that dude has been smoking.

The contact photo problem is an issue that I see happening on many android phones so I'm not sure that will get corrected. The low space memory is something that was rectified with the 3D as the internal storage increased to 1GB and apps can be moved to the SD.

I contacted Steinheil/SGP/Spigen about getting their high quality screen protectors made for the Evo 4G LTE.
I won't use any other screen protector until some other company can prove to me they have a better product. (a debate for a different time)

They have very responsive and helpful customer service, however it is usually a canned response for pre-release/simplistic questions, as follows:
Spigen said:
Dear XXXXXXXXX,
Thank you for contacting Spigen SGP customer service department.
My name is Michelle from Spigen.com

Thank you for your interest in our Spigen products!

As of now we don't have any definite plans to make screen protectors for the HTC Evo 4G LTE. However if there is an increased interest from our customers, we may change our production plans in the future. Please check our website for any updates time to time.

If you have any additional question, please do not hesitate to contact us again.

Thank you

Please let them know we want their products for our Evo 4G LTE's - especially Ultra Optics - via email, Facebook, Twitter, and their contact page. Chances are medium to high they will make these no matter what, however they won't for sure make them (especially Ultra Optics) unless they know we want them.

Yeah, I agree that this is completely canned. Considering it's canned, there will only be two types of responses. (1) "We sell the product you desire, check out our website," or (2) "We do not sell your product, but we might in the future." Essentially, this email means nothing.

As a business, emails will not weigh very strong in favor of providing the product. Device sales, on the other hand, will be the leading - and possibly only - factor worth considering. The reason for this is that they are selling a fungible product. The vast majority of consumers won't care about this product over that of the competition (though, I am very intrigued by this "Ultra Optics" thing, I want to know more about this). Because this is a fungible product, they are not able to differentiate much their product from that of the competition beyond availability and advertising, which again is also the same as everyone else.

My point is that they are simply trying to get a piece of pie as big as they can (think size of the piece, not degree of the cut). As a manufacturer of a fungible good, they already have a good idea what degree/percentile that slice of pie will be for any device. What they DON'T know is how big the pie is, until after the device is released.

So if you want them to sell the product, spread the word for the device! But I really don't see that being a problem with the LTEvo ;).

Edit: On second thought, the emails will suggest a degree of product differentiation to them. So it may weigh heavier than I had originally considered...

so the phone won't be a sucess because it's name has LTE in it and people don't know what LTE is???? okay, i'm glad everyone knew what 4g was when they got the EVO 4g (they didn't have a damn clue) and it was a sucess...

this guy is just an idiot, sure its not the MOST tasteful looking phone but it's not bad. he should probably just stop writing articles now, i tweeted him since he asked me to

I think the gorilla facepalm pic could just as easily apply to that guy. Aside from his misguided LTE argument, he also says the LTEvo won't succeed because it doesn't differentiate enough from the One models available at AT&T and T-Mo. You know what other phone is pretty darn similar between carriers? The Samsung Galaxy II. Yeah, that phone was a flop alright, boy did Samsung screw up!

He really has no idea what he's talking about, and I would not be surprised if he posted his little rant simply to be "controversial" and to get page clicks. It partly worked, we all clicked over. :p

Still wish they'd invent a social networking button that says, "I want my click back!"...LOL.

Yeah, just the nature of business.

I believe most of their business is done overseas (the material is made in Japan and sells well across Europe and Asia. Imported to U.S. via California), so advertising, marketing, and trying to differentiate for the U.S. is not their main goal.

If you are interested in learning more about Spigen's Ultra Optics screen protectors hit the 'show' button below

I'm not trying to promote my own topics here, just trying to get the best info out to others. I made a thorough write up about Steinheil's/SGP/Spigen main screen protector products last year here on androidforums after the Evo 3D launched.

However, I'll break out the pertinent info on the Ultra Optics material since you wondered about it. (feel free to browse the net for other sources. Youtube usually has a few video reviews for their stuff too)

"There is one last unavailable SGP version[for HTC products] I would like to touch on. It is their Ultra Optics material and it is by far the best screen protector I have found for Anti Fingerprinting. It features Anti-Fingerprint technology but also tries really hard to be super clear in the process. It is even clearer than the Ultra Fine Anti-Fingerprint, although still just a tad hazy and out of focus. There is always going to be a slight visual trade off, there is just no way around it I have accepted it - you should too. The best part is I only have to wipe fingerprints off twice or three times a day I would roughly estimate (There gets to be smudgy places). Some have complained/noticed that it has a unique texture to it that is very slightly like an old lenticular animation card that shows an action sequence as you turn the card or change viewing angle. Example:
3D-Lenticular-Card-2018857880.jpg

(source:google search results; you may remember these from when you were a kid)
The texture is there, with a slight zip noise, but I actually enjoy the texture and don't mind the slight noise at all, the texture I barely notice.

It also doesn't do great in super bright environments. There gets to be a strange visual effect that can be attributed to the "in-layed micro lens array". It happens when light is reflected off the screen protector; see example:
1.jpg

(source: ilounge product review)
It is not the cameras fault, this is how the screen protector reacts to reflected light on the "inlaid micro lens array". You can see there is rainbowy off colored orbs all around the source of light. It is a tad annoying, but all you have to do is change angle so you aren't reflecting.

All things considered, it is the best screen protector we never had. There is a few little trade offs, but I can handle them in everyday life
...
I'm SEVERELY SEVERELY disappointed that they have not made this material screen protector available for the Evo 3D. I have an email out with SGP to find out why they haven't produced this product for us.
...

They without question make Ultra Optics for any Apple products (as well as a huge line of exclusive cases for Apple products) and have only recently reached out to make Ultra Optics for a few Samsung devices and one Sony device. They are only making Ultra Optics for their cash cows. But I believe if we can prove there is enough interest that they would possibly produce Ultra Optics for the Evo 3DEvo 4G LTE.

Ultra Optics product line has expanded since last year when I wrote the article (they also added a Glass screen protector, glas.t, however it does not interest me), but is still limited for devices that really break ground it seems.

If they see how many people want the good stuff for the Evo LTE I imagine they would probably do a test run of it and see how it sells. The Evo 4G sold well enough but it released before Ultra Optics existed. If enough Evo 4G users are getting the Evo 4G LTE we could make a dent they might take note of.

Honestly, ^^^ is one of the biggest arguments I see in favor of a simplified product line.

Sure, I'm in a way pleased that our version of the HTC One X has a slightly larger battery, a microSD slot, and a kickstand, but I would easily give all that up for just a regular ole HTC One X.

This is because from an accessories ecosystem perspective, it only benefits the consumers where there are a few key, simple products for accessory mfrs to coalesce around -- like the iPhone. There are tons of different screen protectors (Stenheil for example only offers its complete line including the oleophobic screen protector for the iPhone, as far as I know) and tons of car docks and tons of radio docks.

Here, now we have to wait until someone decides there's enough of an interest and the market justifies the investment into making a version of the dock, case, screen protector, etc. And for example, on launch day, we can't pick up the generic HTC car dock (designed with the One X contacts) but have to wait for Sprint to sit on its butt and release a separate car dock (it took over a month from release for the Evo 3D desktop dock to come out... sigh).
