Root Slim ICS and loving it

I had the hardest time with my phone over the last few weeks and couldn't seem to get it to flash even the stock ROMS until I figured out it was a combination of the USB cable and the computer. Serendipity ended up being too unstable and I had that mysterious battery drain issue from time to time.

Well, last night it was a good night being able to flash to Slim ICS 3.2. It's been so wonderful and fast, I never knew my 2 year old phone could be so great. Everything works amazing so far, it's fast and stable. I've been dying for the S3 to come out but I could honestly live without it for now. My old Captivate runs awesome!

Don't hesitate with ICS, especially Slim ICS...

how do i know if I have cwm? i can get into download and recovery mod with the rom manager in the background. is that cwm?

iffrett, see my post here http://androidforums.com/captivate-all-things-root/531462-i-think-im-gonna-take-plunge.html

Basically you want to flash to get CWM, so you can follow my first link to a ROM that has CWM built in. Then you flash teamhacksung CM9. You might end up in a bootloop but just flash it again. Then you flash slim ICS and captivate essentials and reboot and you're done. It's not that hard.

CWM you can see when you reboot into recovery mode. It will say CWM or clockwork recovery in recovery mode. It has a lot of options and doesn't look basic like this:

Depending on which version you have it will look something like this:

But don't worry if you don't have it, you can install it from that link I've provided via a one click installer that will flash GB. I tried to install CWM on a flaky phone and trust me it's much easier to flash the whole ROM.

Slim ICS is still running like a champ. Just discovered the built in bandwidth management tool and wifi hotspot. So sweet...

Running ICS SLim for 2 weeks and it has been perfect. I would def recommend. I would def recommend it too. It has been more stable than GB for me.
iffrett, with the phone turned off, hold vol up and vol down and power on, when you see att screen, let go of the power button, it should take you to CWM if you have it. The easiest way for me was to odin one-click a GB rom with CWM, flash Teamhacksung's latest build, then ICS base + essentials.

This is what I did to get to slim 3.1, it should be the same for whatever version is out now . ( I am assuming you are on GB)

-Backup your stuff
-Download the latest teamhacksung and latest slim, place on SD Card
-remove sim/external card
-reboot in CWM, clear data/cache
-install zip from team hacksung, let it reboot.
-Reboot in CWM, clear data/cache
-install Slim essentials + base.
-reboot.

If you get a boot loop dont panic, just go into CWM and reflash what you had just flash.
Let me know if this works out. Havent looked back after I went to ICS

ok yea everything seems to be working now. however i think i might switch back to GB. the battery life isn't as good so far and i feel like there's still a ton of features that are missing with slim. i would love to have a dark themed stock calendar, speed dialling, and a more organized way of sorting contacts. i can't seem input any contact info besides their phone numbers, even the most primitive versions of froyo allowed users to put email addresses, notes, and other info for the contact.

I agree I missed the speed dialing (I think the only way around this is to download another dialer, such as GO dialer). However, I am able to put email addresses and other info when I go to add a contact. I dont know why you can't.
As for battery life , I get the same I was getting GB which was pretty good. It can hold me for the day. If you can, give it a few charging cycles.

i can only see the contact card with extended info (like email) and stuff if i add a new contact. how do i view the contact cards for existing contacts? i cant seem to find a way of accessing them. also is there some way i can have BLN?

I'm not running the latest build, but i believe it is done from the ASS menu in the options. I think someone asked this before so if its not there, just do a quick search in the thread in xda.

About the contacts, Im not sure what you mean. if I click on a contact, all of their info shows up, if I try to edit them I can add new fields.
