Strictly speaking, no and no.

There's no one single file, ROM or kernel that will act as an all-in-one flash to give you root, CWM and NFC enabled; at least, not that I've seen yet for the Note, although these have existed and do exist for other devices. I did them all separately but yes, used Odin to accomplish the first two and then zip file to SD card and installed from CWM to get NFC enabled.

I flashed a CWM .tar after being rooted, but could have done so prior to root. So I initially flashed a root kernel (the one of DaG's from XDA that's not OC'd or UV'd; just vanilla). I think this answers the CWM question but if I'm creating more confusion than answering questions, please let me know! lol

NFC is not enabled in the root kernel I flashed or the custom ROM I am currently running (Solaris Prime). However, there's a zip file installable through CWM that simply "opens" the NFC option in the settings menu on the device. I do believe you need to be rooted for this to work.

Hope this helps in some way.

Damn it works for the Telus Note. I will wait till someone makes a proper rooted Telus kernel with CWM. I also noticed ATT disabled Glonass. I'm so glad Telus keeps the firmware clean with no bloating or limitation of features.

I want my note rooted. Never done this before but I've always wanted to. Im not new to android. I've had the g2x sgs and sgs2. Im sure some of you guys have noticed the lag with the note. I sure have. Will rooting fix this? Im either going to want the cyanogenmod or ics for my Rom. And also can you guys recommend the best way to root. With DETAILED instructions. Also if its possible a way where i can unroot my note and the warranty not br voided? Idea really appreciate it. Thanks!!!

Are you familiar at all with XDA? If not, have a look at the following threads on that forum. They should address most of your questions:

1. Root kernel that doesn't trip that flash counter found here, complete with step-by-step instructions in the OP. - [ROOT/UNROOT/Custom Recoveries/Kernels/Roms] AT&T Galaxy Note ONLY!/ No Flash Counter - xda-developers

2. Revert to stock if needed, again see OP - [STOCK ODIN] [AT&T, TELUS, Bell, Rogers] In case of brick... - Page 10 - xda-developers

The second option will essentially bring you back to stock, and because the root method above doesn't trip your flash counter, neither ATT nor Samsung will be able to verify that you've flashed stuff, therefore your warranty will remain in tact. Understand that Samsung will still know you've done SOMETHING, but they won't be able to tell what, so it won't void the warranty.

Good luck.

Rooted.

Easy, painless and totally reversible (in a back-to-stock sense).

The only that's not reversible as yet is resetting flash counter, but if you flash a root kernel via Odin, you shouldn't trip the flash counter anyway.

You can reset the Flash Counter: [Flash Counter Reset][AT&T, Rogers] Reset your flash counter - xda-developers

Hey guys, If I should root my Galaxy Note right now, do I lose root when I update to ICS when it comes???

Far as I can tell, if you root, you won't get the ICS update Over The Air.

Now, this is my first Samsung phone, so it may be different, but I know with HTC devices, once you root and flash a rooted ROM and CWM Recovery, you'r done for OTA updates unless you revert back to stock.

This is mostly correct. I've had Samsung phones, all rooted and the first two broke their OTA when I rooted them, so not sure why this would be any different.

However, some people have said that they still get OTA updates despite being rooted, but they seem to be the exception.

The OTA update is a moot point. The reality is that if you do not receive the pushed update there is nothing to worry about.

As soon as the ics update is available you will see it on XDA available for download. You can easily install this with Odin.

Or:

Wait a few days and someone will work on producing a deodexed rooted rom or kernel that could be flashed.

i'm getting my note tomorrow and absolutley petrified to root my phone LOL....I'm going to keep reading on and see if I get the balls to do this. *sigh*

It is super easy, check out Max at RootGalaxyNote.com , I had never rooted a phone before and after reading and watching countless hours of YouTube how to videos I finally got the courage and did it. :D Currently I have the Saurom Rom on my Note I717, ICS was a disaster for me, don't know why. Good luck.

I also went this root(see what I did there). Very simple. I'm currently running the stock ROM. I'm not sure which custom ROM to go with. I've backed everything up so I'm assuming it won't be too bad restoring everything when and if I get the b*lls to do it. Was flashing the ROM as simple as the root process?
