What did I do wrong?

The other day I rooted my gnex via wugs toolkit. This morning I tried to install the codename android ROM via ROM Manger. It appeared to be successful, but on reboot it ran the standard ICS bootscreen for about 20 minutes before I pulled the battery. After a little bit of freaking out and reading threads, I flashed back to stock (thanks again wug) and have my phone functioning again. I intend to root it again, and am still interested in different ROMs etc... but before I try again, I'd like to have an idea about what I did wrong. Thoughts?

i would suggest ALWAYS wiping data...even when doing small incremental updates (say from 1.35 to 1.4) even if the DEV says it is not necessary. this is the ONLY way to guarantee you are getting a clean install.

with the help of Titanium backup Pro, a comlete wipe/ROM flash and getting it back to where it was before the flash takes me about 30 minutes.
backup user apps
boot recovery
wipe data/cache
install ROM
flash GAPPS
boot
skip sign in
open market
download titanium and the pro key
batch restore user apps and data
do all your settings
restore your home screen backup
replace widgets

i have been using the method above for over a year without any problems. and like i said, it literally takes me 30 minutes to get the fresh ROM install back to where i had it before.
