Hello,
I updated my (not rooted) Xperia Play to Android 2.3.4 yesterday and afterwards it no longer syncs or connects to Google. So I can't sign into Google talk, receive emails, or sync my calendar. I am able to connect to the internet through wifi and 3g. I do have the white\grey network icons.

I did the easy things, restarted it, disabled and reabled wifi, and tried toggling airplane mode. I don't have any more ideas on how to fix it after that.

The update did not specifically break Google Talk. It broke the phones connection with google I'm trying to find out if there is a solution that I can do to it myself. I would like to avoid taking it to the Verizon store, so much so that I would rather root it and and load the custom 4.0 rom.

You need to unlock the bootloader to install CM9 (trust me, I maintain it for R800x (check xda)) ;)

I have the same problem, although my icons aren't broken.

It's most annoying with Google Talk, as I am not getting my text messages synced, and I use Google Talk for all of my text messaging. Manual updating works, but that's super irritating.

Same problem with Gmail, also, manual updates only. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!

This sucks. And it's really unfortunate, because otherwise 2.3.4 is a very nice performance improvement for me.

Do I have to unlock the bootloader to load a custom ROM, or is it only for ICS custom ROMs?

If it requires a custom kernel yes (cm/ics/miui) otherwise no.

you don't have to have an unlocked bootloader for some of the roms. i've tried out all the roms for locked bootloaders but didn't come away very impressed. there were little annoyances with all of them that made me go back to the stock rom.
some of the roms, while freeing up a lot of extra space, took out too much which ended up breaking a few features i use (text to speech for one) and they removed the games that came preloaded (i had a hell of a time getting working version back). There's one with the SE UK framework that I liked but it was literally a carbon copy with none of the bloatware taken out. If that one would have been cleaned out I would probably still be using it.
I'd try 'em out if you want to play around with your phone but if you actually want to make your phone better you might want to get the bootloader unlocked and try those roms for unloacked bootloaders.

Same problems here since the update. Anyone figure this out yet?

Update: After about 45 minutes on the phone with VZW trying all kinds of solutions, ultimately a factory date reset (under privacy) restored my notifications. I'll have to re-download all my apps, but at least it seems to be working.

Note: Only remaining issues is that I cannot sign into Gtalk and the wifi/3G icons stay white/gray.

Update 2: Well after about 30 minutes, I stopped getting notifications again! wtf

I also called Verizon I could tell I knew more about android which was reflected in the fact that he gave up and told me to call google.

Right now I only cannot sign into Google Talk and have the white icons. I did a factory reset (I was so relieved when it synced my contacts) but I feel that it wasn't necessary.

I think I may just try running a custom rom and see if it fixes it. Espcially since Game Keyboard was released recently.

Cool let us know how you make out. Thinking about custom ROM myself after this mess.

I have the same issue with broken Google Talk and no Gmail notifications. I called Verizon and got the usual "we don't know of any such issues" but he was willing to send me out a replacement XP. I asked if there was another model they could send me but he said their policy is that so long as there is stock of this one, they will continue to send me out replacements. This will be my third XP, so if it continues to happen once I get the most recent update, I'm going to call back and raise some hell and see if I can get them to violate that policy...

Unlock your bootloader, come to CM9. Our problems are no Bluetooth audio & no video recording, and speakers are quieter. That's it. :p

Oh, and touchpads are acting funky.

i'm just gonna tough it out till the ICS UPdate unless the big red mofo's hold that

Do we know if VZW is even working on the ICS update for the Play? The phone is a year old now, they've avoided updates in the past on other phones that were newer than that. I remember reading that Sony was going to release it, but of course that does not mean VZW has to let us have it...

I got my replacement XP from Verizon, set up my Google account, and got the 2.3.4 update right away before installing even a single other app. Result = same issue with Google Talk, "could not connect to server".

I called VZW right away and explained what I did, they contacted Sony who claimed to not have had any reports of this issue, and after a bit of haggling, they agreed to replace my XP with a Droid X2 instead. I'm not real jazzed on the X2 but it will get me by until my upgrade arrives - and hopefully the Samsung Galaxy Note/Journal will be out by then...
