Anyone else feel kind of meh about the SGS3 now?

I do. I watched the whole unveil live yesterday and left disappointed or at least.. meh

These guys went on and on and on and on with trite saying after trite saying and cliche video after cliche video and blah blah about "redefining smart phones" and there is really nothing here that redefines smart phones. In fact, it is much of the same and nothing that pushes new boundaries and thus, redefines smart phones.

Battery size that is on par with others (even smaller than some), screen has been done, USA cpu has been done, 8mp camera has been done, body design is same old same old and not as visionary as they want to act like (a pebble or leaf inspire give me a f***** break, so stupid), actually a bit thicker than some others, same old 1gb and so on - average well established hardware trends already out right now. They may have added some cool software, but that does not sell me a phone and much is available in 3rd party or will be soon after so the nifty software will not be unique to them for long.

You know, hours later, LG - with no lame orchestra pomp and circumstance - trumped Samsung with the simple press release about their new Optimus LTE2 that has virtually everything the SGS3 has. Wireless charging, which Samsung tried to act like yesterday was so unique to them, a bigger battery, nice design cues, a nice 2gb of RAM, etc.

Point is, for USA, the SGS3 so did not live up to the hype as it did not "redefine" ay aspect of a smart phone and was just more of the same. No jaw dropping design, no 12mp camera, no 2gb of RAM, no quad core in USA - everything is already in play on other phones so what did the redefine? To much hype, no delivery.

It prettymuch has everything I'd want in a smartphone personally. I just got my Note though so it'll be a bit before I get anything else. I think people just have unrealistic expectations.

I love it and think it's a definite step in the right direction. They're taking a leaf out of Apple's marketing campaign and going OTT with everything. I'm not a fan of cheesy marketing but it doesn't really bother me.

I'm pleased they're starting to focus on useful software features. Although I love stock Android, I think if they're going to add a UI overlay they should at least make it useful.. and this is the first Touchwiz that achieves that imo.

It is not that what really redefines smart phones is unrealistic, it is that no one is melding it all together. HTC hit it the most recently by pushing some of the boundaries - like with a quad core chip in a phone.

Point is, they went on and on about redefining smart phones & the wait is over and the new life changing phone is here and yada yada, and redefined nothing in any spec. They did some neat things in software, but nothing redefining as they hyped it was.

the battery is already the 2nd largest battery in a phone isn't it? 2100mAh is huge.
the design of the phone is purely subjective, so whatever.
2gb isn't unrealistic, but it is unnecessary.
more mp in a small sensor just makes for worse photo's, nobody wants that.
nfc is in the phone

snapdragon vs exynos? the only way you'll ever know the difference is if you run a benchmark

Weak.. First, do some research, Samsung is NOT know for pushing updates and being on top of that aspect. Second, the big suppose-to-be-updated-first-and-before-everything phone, the pure "Google experience" Galaxy Nexus - JUST got it's first update after 5 or so months to fix issues... so how is that working out?

Point is, your response is kind of a cliche one at best... "see how they handle updates". Please, Android is so fragmented, no one really handles updates as timely as we all need them and those they sold it that they would are not delivering. I don't own an LG and don't really care, just saying with no BS, they upped Samsung hours later in several specs areas (screen, battery, RAM) and met them in 1 Samsung said was so unique to them (wireless charging)... but yet Samsung was suppose to have just redefined the smart phone?

Yes, the flamboyancy and pomp was so over the top, it was rather pathetic and so cliche. Those "cool" artsy videos, the orchestra, just so much bunk hype that when they go to phone stuff I was like... "thats it"? Thats what you got?

the verizon galaxy nexus isn't the same as the gsm galaxy nexus. gsm version gets the updates from google. verzion version has to wait for verizon to update it

If it is on VZW me to

as it will be the best that VZW has to offer and my OG Droid is to slow to deal with. But that is because IF it is on VZW it will be one of their better offering, but NOT because it is a smart phone that redesigned smart phones that I was expecting. Heck, the coming RAZR HD might offer better or similar specs in some ways as well. But I know.. that is a MOTO so locked bootloader and blah blah

So what is your point? I know samsung is not exactly stellar on updates except Nexus line. But everyone knows LG is even worse on that. If not LG, looks like you won't get any phone until someone makes phone with PC like spec.

OP you seem to be doing a spec check.

What makes you think (for example) a 10/12mp camera will give you over an 8mp ? I'll tell you: bigger files. Thats it. Image quality doesn't come from big numbers.

2Gb RAM - what are you going to use it for ? 1Gb appears to be more than ample right now and can obviously handle multi tasking etc. So why add money to the phone for the sake of a spec line ?

I'm sure they could of made a 2Ghz multi core phone with a 5000mah battery and 4Gb RAM with a 20mp camera in a carbon fibre case that was waterproof. It'd cost $1500-2000. Are you still interested ? Would networks carry it ? doubtful.

and its totaly samsungs fault. the G3 should of just been unveiled at MWC in feb. this phone does not deserve its own show. its a kickass phone imho but it is an incremental upgrade.

pentile screen and no groundbreaking design. samsung made and allowed the internet go crazy waiting for a phone that is just not a "killer" device.

all that said though, i'll say it a million times. a removable battery and sd card trumps any sexy design. i want my phone to be more function over design.

unfortunately the dumb masses think sleek and sexy is more important than anything else.

i agree, samsung has the power, money and resources to make the S3 a KILLER device. and they just went with a conservative design and held back.

i have no idea why they would totally hype a device like this. the S3 should be a phone that totally blow the doors off everything out there now. they want to be the apple destroyers? they better start kicking butt in design and hardware features.

and i'm a samsung fanboy saying this. i do like the phone but yea, its not a true killer phone.

Samsung are being realistic..you can throw in all those powerhouse specs that aren't going to be needed until the next flagship comes out and drive up the cost of the phone, or you can throw in a decent spec upgrade (where it matters) that makes everything a lot better, without going overboard.

Megapixels mean diddly squat in terms of image quality, they just result in bigger file sizes for photos. I would have been more annoyed if it was a 12MP camera.

2GB RAM isn't needed at this time and won't be for a long time. RAM needs power. Samsung appear to have focused on battery life here, which is a truly useful feature for everyone. Androids multitasking system does a good job of freeing up RAM for apps when they need it.

If they made it a powerhouse phone with a quad core 2GHz processor and 2GB RAM, it would only last five minutes unless they made it a brick that could accommodate a 3000mAh battery.

They've clearly weighed up the battery efficiency vs. features and made some wise choices.

i understand what you are saying. and i agree. but i think they should not of made an event for the S3. i think making such a huge woop about this phone got peoples expectations up. this phone just should of been in mwc.

the thing is, we tech freaks know that 8mp camera can be just as good (or even better) than another camera that is 12mp. but to the average non-tech savvy consumer, more is better. and we tech enthusiasts make up maybe 5% of the phone customers.

if i go to everyone i know and ask "this cam has 8mp and this other cam has 12mp...which would you buy?" or if i say "this has 1gig of ram and this has 2gig of ram. which do you want?" everyone that i know would say they want the 12mp or the 2 gig ram because "its better"

so i think with better specs and sexier design, they could of marketed this phone as "the best phone ever".

although i dont care about sexiness. i actually prefer the black slab look of the note myself. i'm just referring to what will sell to the masses.

But they never said they would make it for MWC and in fact the launch date is 3 months past that. 3 months is an awful lot of precious time if you are in a development phase. It simply was not ready.
So, given that they had to announce it separately.

And to be honest I think the tech media are to blame for at least some the hype. Look how many speculative articles were written about the phone, "rumours from an insider" bah, there were no insiders, most of it was made up purely to get people to read their site. Clicks = advertising money. Besides, those people might come back in a few days or a week to read the site..

Its only in the last week or so that we've actually seen stuff come from Samsung - the handbook was obviously them, as was the press release about the processor. Can hardly be deemed as them creating hype though.
