[International / GSM] Brand new Galaxy Nexus from Google - had to replace it within 4 days!!

Hey people,

I ordered the unlocked Galaxy Nexus from Google Play and got it delivered last week. I migrated to the $30 a month-unlimited text/data-100 mins plan from T-mobile (which I think is an awesome plan). After about 2 days into the plan, my phone lost complete signal connectivity. Repeated calls to Samsung did not help (T-mobile was good as the sim card had full reception on another phone), even a hard reset did not bring the signal back on. Finally I called the support number on Google and they offered to get the phone replaced. So I have the new phone now, and I have some questions about this whole issue.

ICS 4.0.4 - There is a pending ICS update on my new phone, which I have not yet installed. I read on many forums that the ICS 4.0.4 could be causing the signal issues. So should I go ahead and install the update? I had installed the update on my earlier handset and faced the loss of signal. So not sure if I should. If it helps, my Build number is IMM30D, Kernel version is 3.0.8-g21f62a0 android-build@apa28 #1.

Future updates - Are there any future updates to the ICS expected? If so, would they be addressing the connectivity issues?

Color of the signal - I noticed that the signal indicator on my phone switches to gray from blue, during which I am unable to use data effectively. What does the change in color actually mean?

I am quite new to the Android world with this being my first Android phone, so all the terms and jargons are very over-the-top! I love the phone and really want it to work well, I expected great things from the Google phone!

I did the exact same thing as you (same phone, same plan), and am having no issues being updated to 4.04. It sounds like the first phone may have been buggy. It happens.

The blue bars indicate your signal strength. If they all turn gray, it means you don't have a signal. I usually hover between 2-3 blue bars.

Thanks Lobo89.

It might be something already known, but I did discover that the graying of the signal happened on my phone because I had the 'Restrict background data' checked. I could browse using the browser but not access any of the Google apps, and some other apps such as Vonage mobile, when the signal was grayed out. Once I removed the restriction, everything was accessible and the signal was nice and blue.

Ah, that makes sense. Good to know.
