Moota, you're fine. From my knowledge of the variants of the SGS2, your model is the International version, you just so happen to be on the T-Mobile network over in the UK.

This thread/forum is for US T-Mobile users so I can understand your confusion. Likewise for the other members who've commented in this thread. If you want to discuss your handset/upgrade, you can do so here: Samsung Galaxy S2 (International) - Android Forums

I meant that ICS is not available for the SGH-T989, the T-mobile S2, here in the USA yet.
Am I wrong?

Yes. I had an appointment yesterday at 5 pm with Ali at T-Moble for help setting up Google Music on my T-Mobile SGH-T989. Before leaving my house for the T-mobile appt with Ali, , I took one last look to see if the player was MIRACULOUSLY working. It wasn't but there was a four part message on my cell indicating the new ICS update was available, and that it required a T-Mobile agent to "change some permissions."

Since I was going out the door to T-Mobile I left without acting on the update.

I got my SGH-T989 from Ali about three weeks ago as a phone upgrade, but Ali didn't mention to me at that time that a new Galaxy S III was coming to T-Mobile at the end of May. I returned to T-Mobile for a refund as soon as I was aware of the soon-to-be released S III, but missed the refund by 2 days late. Ali told me at that time that he could work it out the S III when it came out if I would just add an additional line to my T-Mobile account.

So when I got to T-Mobile yesterday, I asked Ali to also add the ICS update, that had just popped up that morning, before he helped me with the music player problem. Ali advised me, since I am switching phones at the end of this month, to wait until then to do the ICS upgrade on the S II, and he is going to buy my S II.

So the answer again is yes, ICS is available now at T-Mobile as you can see from my more detailed post.

I believe that you believe Ali as I believe Jason at my t-mobile, day before yesterday, who confirmed to me that no date is set that he knows of. He has ICS on his S2, but it's a tweaked AT&T update he got from xda.
I apologize for doubting you, and for being wrong, if this is the case.
Where are you located? Maybe we just don't have it here in the Midwest yet, as evidenced by my phone here:

I have a lot of confidence in Ali but the "4 part" notification ICS update message on my phone yesterday was OFFICIAL and not from Ali. I just now checked my phone and got the same "no firmware" as in your screen capture, but the complex notification I got yesterday was not a figment of my imagination - I actually received it, and Ali would have installed it, but suggested I wait for my S III at the end of the month.

I live in Houston.

This is interesting about the notification. No one believed me either when I got a notification from Tmo (a fuscia "T" in a triangle on the notification bar).

When I opened the notification it stated "as a loyal customer Tmo would like to offer you a new Samsung Galaxy S II at no charge." Click yes to agree click no to decline.

Of course, I clicked yes and I called Tmo when I got home and the rep said yes the offer is true - no charge, and I would be happy to upgrade your shipping to "express 2 day" at no charge. This all happened, coincidentally, on my birthday about 2 months ago.

Oddly, I had been at a Tmo store the day before and was a little miffed that the best deal I could get on an SGS II was $289. So I left the store abruptly, with my Vibrant, muttering that I would look at Sprint and Verizon when my contract was up.

Since that time Tmo was forced to drop using the notification bar for marketing/upgrades due to a flood of customer complaints. I can't understand why people would complain, simply ignore the ads and collect the free upgrade! :)

So yes, I believe it might be possible Billbo. Stranger things have happened. They might be pushing ICS to randomly selected customers.

However, I have my doubts about the following statement being true in general:
So the answer again is yes, ICS is available now at T-Mobile as you can see from my more detailed post.

This is backed up by my calls to multiple Tmo stores in the L.A. area. They all have advised me that there is no general ICS update available for the SGS II and that it is NOT a matter of changing permissions, they are waiting for SD cards with the update so that they can load it on new phones. They did say to check back in 10 days or so.

It would be interesting to see if "Ali" could get ICS installed on your SGS II. It wouldn't hurt anything and it would be great intel for the community. Take one for the team Billbo and show us ICS from Tmo please!

I am sorry but I feel a bit stupid here. Not trying to be funny in any way!!

What is the point of side loading ICS from an sd card when it can be done either OTA or using a USB cable and Samsung Kies. I want to also note for the record that T-Mobile has been the Pink Elephant in the room when it comes to updating phones to ICS. In the Samsung's schedule for updates T-Mobile was just absent.

There have been no leaks for the T989 ICS nor has there been any official news. Even if T-Mobile has the authentication privileges to push the update to your phone - they will not do it. I also suspect that the lower level tech have absolutely no idea when T-Mobile plans to update the phones.

Anyway - for the purposes of T-Mobile USA and the T989 variant of the Samsung Galaxy S2 there is no ISC - I don't believe that there is eve a stable rom that would give you ICS.

Valid point and who knows...

I am interested in, but not invested, in getting ICS. The SGS II is so far beyond the Vibrant it replaced that I enjoy it every time I pick it up. And yesterday when I switched the sim back into the Vibrant I was amazed at the differences between the phones.

Robo, you could be right. Now I am interested. Ali is going to buy my S2, so I will ask him whats the problem since he wants to use ICS. I will give him a call tomorrow.

Side note: a month ago when I upgraded from my Vibrant to the Galaxy S2, the first Tmo branch I went to told me that I couldn't upgrade phones for three months. They were also unable to help me with my Vibrant problem and sent me to the Tmo branch where Ali works. He sold me my white S2 with 10 GB memory ON THE SPOT!

Great point, I did some research and there is a stable 4.0.3 on xda developers website and it looks pretty good. I think now I am going to root my phone. Thanks for the correction - just want to say the US version of the Samsung Galaxy S2 still has no official ICS release.

no.. there is no official release yet.. and the source Kernel for the T989 ICS ROM hasn't been released yet if I am not mistaken.. I have tried most of the ROM's there and I think I will wait until the official release of ICS before I jump on board.. I really don't think it will be a very long wait.. most likely a couple weeks maybe a month.. although i have the Canadian version (T989D).. I suspect both will have similar release dates..

and rooting is definitely the way to go... it opens up a whole new world of enjoyment for this device.. just follow the guide in the T989 all things root forum

just follow the guide and make sure your phone has lots of juice in it before you attempt it because if your phone dies in the middle.. It's probably a bad thing.. other than that , it's hard to brick this phone just make sure that the ROM you try to install is designed for the T989 model

How does that work, if you are on a settings screen for instance when you press HOME and POWER at the same time, it leaves the screen you needed the screen shot from?

Thanks

If you press them at the same time it won't leave the screen you are trying to capture. You may have to practice with the timing a little but it will work.
