Root Overclock suggestions?

I have almost always overclocked my phones. SetCPU was the first thing I used back on my Eris, and since coming to the DInc2 I have tried several on several different ROMs.

I'm currently running GingerBangSense 4.5 M, Drellisdee's #21 kernel and O/Cing with SetCPU. Quite often when I wake my phone it doesn't run as though it is being overclocked, and then a minute after waking it flashes the "SetCPU has been granted superuser permission" and it then runs like hot grease on a Teflon skillet. After going to sleep, this cycle may or may not happen again every time I wake the phone. It may wake and run slick as snot and never show the permissions message again, or after a few cycles it may start slow again until "SetCPU has been granted permissions" then picks up the pace again.

I didn't have this problem with No Frills CPU Control when I ran it, but it didn't seem to improve performance. I don't even think it was actually even overclocking  at least not when I compare it to the benchmarks and performance with SetCPU.

So, my question is this. What do YOU use to O/C and do you really think it works? I need suggestions, because the ones I have tried from the market say they don't work for this phone

I gave overclocking a try a couple months back. I never did notice any type of performance improvement. I've since given up on this. I personally do not think using any of the O/C utilities does any good.

I typically have overclocked strictly to get rid of lag. Any little snag, delay, hiccup, pause, jitter or blip I see when I scroll (especially in the app drawer) bugs the hell out of me. The only way I have been able to rid myself of this is by O/Cing.
My battery life doesn't suffer amazingly enough, but I can definitely tell the difference when I O/C.

I would like to add that with my thunderbolt, many of the lag issues can be "tuned" out by editing the values in the build.prop file and the init.d scripts folder with various apps. Not sure how much crosses over (haven't messed with my wife's phone much), but it's an idear. FWIW, these changes are for a ROM, but many should carry over - specifically in the build.prop section.
