Root Root me baby one more time

Inexperienced forum user so hope I'm in the right place.

Several months ago I got a Spica 5700I. I followed instructions to "root" the phone (Beerkan, I think I followed yours) and all was well. I ended up with the following settings:

Build number = LeShaK's Kernel v.LK2.01.1
Kernel version = 2.6.29/leShak@i5700-dev7 #65
Firmware version = 2.1-update1

I can't be sure of this as it's a while ago I did it but I think I ended up being able to see that I had superuser access to the phone via adb.exe. In other words, the rooting had gone as planned and all was well.

Since then I've been using the phone without a problem and have never really had a need as yet to use the superuser access. Recently I went to plug the phone into the PC to get a video file from the phone. Nothing I can think of will get the PC to recognize the phone.

Here's some info:

When I plug the phone in via USB cable that came with the phone, the PC installs the drivers and the phone starts charging.
I have enabled Applications/Development/USB Debugging
I do not have any menu option on the phone to say turn it into a mass storage-only device (which I have seen referred to in various places)
adb.exe devices doesn't find any
I have installed the latest KIES and it attempts to connect with the phone but eventually says device not recognized.
PC is running Vista 64 Home Premium SP2.

I can't think of any relevant change to my setup since I went thru the rooting exercise. What shows up in device mgr are:

SAMSUNG USB Composite Device
SAMSUNG Mobile Modem
SAMSUNG Mobile Modem Diagnostic Serial Port (WDM)

All 3 drivers above claim to be working properly.

So no way to access the phone filesystem with or without KIES.

Anybody got any ideas?

I ended up doing a factory reset of the spica with the sd card removed. It wiped out contacts, apps etc but now the pc can see it. I still seem to have root access and leshaks kernel is still intact. Now I'm wondering if it was some app I installed that caused me to lose connectivity thru the driver? Still confused but at least I can get at the video files......

I have a question regarding the installation of apps on the phone.
If I'll root my Spica using the above tutorial, will I be able to choose where the apps will install (on the sd card or on the phone's internal memory)? I'm asking this because there are some apps (like games) which I imagine are safe being installed on the sd card, but some apps (like HelixLauncher) should remain on the phone's internal memory.
So is it possible to choose when you install an app?
Many thanks.

Hi, I flashed my spica a couple of days ago using your guide. At first i can't connect to the web at all so I updated my carrier's APN on the phone and I can browse again but whenever I try to log in to google mail on the phone to do a sync which is required for android market and some applications, I get an error message saying "Failed to establish a secure connection". I need help with this one please since because of the error I can't also connect using WiFi. Thanks

I did a new flash and the problem is solved besides I don't see any use as with any apk I install with app installer my phone memory goes down.
I did exactly what you wrote here and the setup went smooth but now again I am down to 98 megs.
2 partitions first 1Gb and second 3Gb.
Also every time I boot I have a keyboard error popping-up

also could you tell me if it might be better to use I570EXXJH7 in stead of I570EXXJH6
I'm sorry for the many newbie questions but sure this will be a help for many other newbies as well.
Just trying to learn and to play a little with my phone and a Dutch beer is on your way...cold ;)

hi beerkan,

igot stuck on the screen with exclamation mark on my phone.
The next thing that will be done based from your procedure is wait for the phone to reboot (in RED Fonts).
I ahve copied the prodedure below kindly help. Thanks.

"""When you DO see COM Port mapping in Odin, click Start.

Takes about 3 mins, and you will see a green progress bar.

Wait for your phone to reboot, about (2 mins) with No Sim message.
Odin should say PASS!
Disconnect phone USB cable from PC
Close Odin.

Wait for phone to boot, then power off phone and insert SIM & SD.

N.B. If the firmware defaults to Dutch Language after updating, change it with these instructions:-

Menu
Instellingen
Landinstelling en tekst
Landinstelling selecteren
English (United Kingdom)"""

I followed the guide. It went ok until the first reboot. I got a message that the installing failed. Then three options in green, the first one was to reboot, second to install .zip from SD card and the third... I don't remember. I picked reboot but it stays on the samsung screen, and then nothing. Maybe I did something wrong? I put odin in admin and compatibility mode. I'm using windows 7.

Edit:
This is what is shown:

Android system recovery <0.5.2>
-- Samsung Spica i5700 --
Use Up/Down and OK to select

Reboot system now [Home+Back]
Apply sdcard/update.xip
Apply any zip from SD
