ICS finally coming in "early Q3"

Once Motorola pushes it out, do we automatically get it or do we have to wait on Verizon to do whatever to it?

You get it automatically. Motorola does not push it until Verizon approves the release, so anything that Verizon requires (i.e., their bloatware apps) will be specified as part of the testing procedure.

Seems like it was just yesterday that the wailing and gnashing of teeth with fear that the Bionic was going to be cast aside. Glad to see things are more clear, I notice the phase release document has jumped up two steps, if I am correct I believe I read about this possibility from other poster on this forum too. In my brief experience I can see a more committed firmware support attitude from Moto than LG; that is a good thing.

Even if the Bionic is affected, it costs Motorola only 33 cents per unit imported during the 60 day Presidential review period. See this:

Jennifer Erickson, a spokesperson for Motorola, released a statement saying that “Although we are disappointed by the Commission’s ruling that certain Motorola Mobility products violated one patent… Motorola Mobility will not experience any impact in the near term, as the Commission’s ruling is subject to a $0.33/per unit bond during the 60 day Presidential review period.”

Well, they told us Q2 2012 and now it's Q3... better late than never I guess. But I'm not holding my breath. It could very well be Q4 or even 2013. I'm glad that they're sticking by their promise to EVENTUALLY upgrade the Bionic to ICS, but I definitely do not believe the timetable. I'll believe it when it's on my device.

Motorola never promised that the Bionic would get ICS in Q2. The early Q3 announcement was the first timeframe announcement that Motorola or Verizon made about the Bionic.

Plus, technically, it's still Q2 (Q3 starts in July). I'm not holding my breath, but they could get it rolled out in Q2. Once the RAZR gets it, we'll get it shortly after (just my opinion).

Think that when ICS arrives on the RAZR will be a great barometer on when the Bionic will get it given the processor & architecture similarities. Watch the RAZR forum once ICS rolls out, keep an eye on the issues, should give you some idea. Also believe it could happen sooner given the delay in the ancicipated Bionic soak test. Given some of the issues folks are talking about on the cheesecake version of .905, maybe Big Red opted to blow it off. Just my opinion.

There are two inescapable truths about the timing of the software releases from Motorola/Verizon ...

-- Related to when the release will come out for one model of phone ... impossible to predict.

-- Related to when the releases will come out between two different models of phone ... impossible to predict.

When you go to a totally new version ... even more impassible to predict.

Simple issues like a Verizon required add-on (AKA bloatware) is needed on one model but not the other and it is not yet checked out.

Sorry ... it will happen when it happens and it will be released in the order that it is released in.

... Thom
