Unregestering an old phone

I just upgraded to a 4G phone (with a sim card. I have a DROIDX that I want to sell. I want to wipe the memory card and do a factory reset. I've heard rumors that turning on the old phone will screw up the new phone in the Verizon network.

I thought of putting the old memory card in the new phone and erasing it. But what about a factory reset on the DROIDX?

I would definitely do a hard reset on any phone that you intend to sell, before you give it to someone else. As for the memory card, you could erase it, but since it probably has a lot of downloads that you might like to have such as photos and music, why not just keep if for your new phone, and let the new buyer purchase their own memory card.

I have already copied the content of the memory card to my computer and transferred all of it to a 32GB class 10 card that I put in the new phone.

The buyer has stated that they want the memory card that came with the DROIDX.

If your new phone is activated on the network, then your old phone has been de-activated and is therefore no longer connected to the network. So how could the act of just powering it on do anything to your new phone? Answer: It couldn't.

The only way your old phone could do anything would be if you powered it on and dialed *228 and pressed 1 to activate/reactivate it on the network. Doing this would then de-activate your new phone.

So, when you power on your old phone, just do not dial *228 and press 1 to activate it.

You can also enter recovery before the OS starts up (from the Droid X SBF/Root Guide):
"hold down the home button while you power the device back on... keep holding the home button till you see a triangle with an exclamation point, then let go and hit both volume buttons at the same time to enter Recovery. Use the volume buttons to move down to "wipe data/cache" press the Power button to select then scroll down to "yes" and press Power again. When it finishes (2 - 3 minutes) select "reboot" using the Power button again."

There is also an option to factory reset in the recovery menu.
