Root Rom Manager / Clockwork Reovery... Restore SPRecovery nands?.

is a smokey place.
Very simple can we use Koushik's ROM Manager / Clockwork recovery rom to restore past Nandroids created using SPRecovery .0.99.3b??... even if I boot right into the clockwork rom and perform a restore from the rom itself like we do with SPRecovery.

Or do I have to push SPRecovery back in order to restore my archived ROM's and other dev's ROMs that use SPRecovery.. like Pete, AdamZ, Chevy...etc.

I'm sure it's been answered ... but I also can't be the only one who's unclear.

Yeah, when I replied I could have sworn I read that but was unable to put my finger on the post where he said it, so I had to revert to making it my opinion only.

TBH, I went looking again, and still cannot find it, but since you're corroborating it I know I am not crazy so I can state with confidence now - No, Clockwork will not restore Nandroid backups.

The only way to make the nandroid backups compatible is to

1) Flash back to SPRecovery (use DroidMod...that will make it easy).

2) Restore your old SPRecovery backup.

3) Once you have that loaded, use ROM Manager and flash back to Clockwork recovery.

4) Then simply backup the current ROM using Clockwork.

Now you have your old recovery in a format that Clockwork recovery can recover.

Ok.. I guess my wish would be that SPRecovery had the correct implementation.... or Clockwork had the legacy adaptation so one or the other could be used to archive / create Nandroid's as well as restore.

Not being able to restore the majority of other ROM's like Pete's, Chevy's, AdamZ... etc, quickly for testing... even in their offering state makes it difficult to commit. The one point of no return, if there is failure, in a quick ROM restore is the recovery rom. If for some reason there is a failure or error in pushing a recovery rom your left with : http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-droid/47349-now-you-can-live-without-fear-bricking.html

I understand Clock does a Nand of the running ROM... but what happens if between pushing Recovery ROMS something happens.... I always use that as my last line of defense... but with this that line has been blurred.

All for the process of development I guess... :)

I get what your saying but really, it's no different than having your "one and only" recovery system failing (which granted...I can't think of any examples of that happening).

You can flash between SPRecovery and Clockworks pretty quickly and easily (via DroidMod and ROM Manager). It might make it harder to flash 4 Roms per day (might have to take it down to 3 :D) but I don't see it as a show stopper. I switched because Koush's ROM is my new favorite ROM to use (for now anyway) and I have been playing with that. I want to test out some of the new implementations of the Helix Launcher so I will probably start swapping back and forth.

Just a heads up. One serious problem in the current Clockwork Recovery is USB mounting is not working (at least for me and a few other users as noted in their forum). Not a problem until you need it. Then it is a major annoyance. I am sure it will be fixed in the next release. I am using Koushik's ROM but for now sticking with SB Recovery for backups and restores.

UBR said it perfectly. I am hoping SirPsycho will revise nandroid in his next release to the proper implementation so we don't have this problem in the future. Technically Koush used the proper nandroid in his Clockwork recovery so it would only be right for SPRecovery to follow suit.

I agree with CRPercodani about getting the recoveries to be compatible. While I am loving Koush's ROM, all the other dev's are no slouches! Pete, Blackdroid, Chevy, Adamz....they have all been pushing out great stuff and I see that there have been a lot of updates in the past week.

Compiled from source is cool, so is "cutting and pasting" as I have heard some people refer to what all the dev's besides Koush is doing. I for one couldn't copy and paste these together to make a solid ROM like the devs have. My point is that having all of these various flavors of ROM's (whether pieced together or made from source code), advances the OS in general. You know that Google, HTC, Motorola, etc. are all looking at what is going on in the Android community. I think "our" devs are giving them ideas for how to improve their own projects. Would certainly be nice to not have to swap recoveries to test out the different flavors.

At least for now, we do have the ability to swap recoveries back and forth...but that will be become it's own support sub-forum

I see.... so you used Clock via ROM manager to get Koushik's ROM on ... then you pushed SPRecovery back on via terminal or droidmod and can now restore previous ROM's... and subsequently create a SPRecovery Nand of Koushik's ROM after you've set it up.

I'm assuming once you created the SPRecovery Nand of Koushik's ROM and moved on to another ROM you can push that archived ROM back via SPRecovery no problems... correct?.. You just can't get his initial ROM unless your using his Clock rom recovery...

..... correct me if I'm wrong..

Thanks

You're on it...but there are SPRecovery compatible "update.zip" version of his ROM. Problem is that you need Clockwork to apply some of the themes (but there are already some work arounds for that).

But yes, once you have his ROM up and running, you can swap back to SPRecovery or vice versa with Bugless Beast (for example).

Shrink57 raised a good concern and this will go to the "what is the more stable recovery" argument (short term anyway)? Based on Clockworks having some bugs that need to be ironed out (and the fact that there have been multiple updates in the last 24-48 hours), I would say that SPRecovery is the "safest" choice. I'm still rolling with Clockwork...but I live dangerously! :D

I was on A.D. yesterday and I saw quite a few people saying that they were having same heartburn about switching Recoveries and that people starting using Koush's update.zip with SPrecovery with no problems that way switching back and forth wasn't such a hassle. I tried finding the thread but don't have much time but I know I read it there.

I played around with the newest version of clockwork recovery this morning and that was the only problem I could find. If Koush fixes that I would prefer to see all the devs switch over to clockwork or at least hope sir psycho makes his compatable

I was switching recoveries when using Koush's ROM. It's a bit of a pain, but nothing too difficult. I went back to SPRecovery and a Droid ROM though, I just like that way better because it's what I'm used to.

J/K, but I'm curious, what rom did you go back to?

Clockwork is still killing me when I backup a themed setup using Koushik's ROM and themes designed specifically for that ROM.. For some reason, when I restore the backup some of my larger apps do not restore. When I try and redownload or even an adb install from my pc I get a "no room on device" error (and there is plenty of room on my sd card and internal memory). A real pain in the rear. If I do a Nandroid backup, no problem. Strange...

Hmmm... interesting. I'm assuming they just did a cache / data wipe and then installed the update.zip.

I'll check out over at cyanogen and see if I can find the post with more details... I'll post feedback when I find it.... or do it.... which ever comes first.. ;)

I actually installed 5.4.0 that way. I was leery about switching recoveries cause...well, SPRecovery is what I am used to. Once I realized that the update.zip method didn't work with the them I wanted to implement (NexTheme at the time didn't have an update.zip option), I switched recoveries.

That was a 1.7.1 problem. 1.7.2 has fixed it.

No, you can't use one recovery to restore a backup made with the other. Sir Psycho modified nandroid a little bit so they're incompatible.

I think what they were discussing is switching back to SPRecovery > restoring a ROM > switching back to Clockwork Recovery > and then making a backup of a ROM like Bugless Beast, DroidMod, etc. and being able to backup and restore it using Clockwork. Or vice-versa depending on what recovery you like.

You're right though, and that the reason that we have to go through this to transition some roms to a different recovery. Problem is that if you are running Clockwork and Bugless Beast is updated, you have to restore your BB backup in Clockwork, flash back to SPRecovery, update ROM, flash back to Clockwork, and then backup your new ROM. Lots of steps involved.

Exactly.

It would be a helava lot easier if there were at least a few more ROMS worth loading up that use Clockwork.... then it would be a no brainer. Then when I load Clock I can stay and play for a while.... not have to play the flip flop game.

Who knows.. im just a whiner ... I'm going to try and update.zip 5.0.4.2 and see how it goes.... if its that special and I like it.... I'll load up ROM Manager and play. but at the least the update.zip will let me get my feet wet to see if that's the case.
