So after doing research it seems the only way to hook up your nexuse to a car dvd deck (which none of them have hdmi yet) is to get a mhl adapter then a converter that will convert the signal to analog. Has anyone done this or tried it? Just want to know if it works as it would be awesome to have netflix on the go.

I cant think of any other way to do it. Powering all the adapters woukd be a PITA.

Everything from monoprice but the converter and usb power cable. I really hope this works as it would be amazing for passengers to watch netflix while on a road trip. I know some people are worried about quality of the picture but that should not be an issue on a 7in or over sized 8in screen in the dash. Now if it was a 20+ inch TV, then you might run into some quality issues.

MHL adapter:
For only $8.82 each when QTY 50+ purchased - Micro USB to HDMI

subscribed. I have been thinking about doing the same thing. Same parts and all was just waiting a deck I liked to become available which happened this weekend.

I just picked up the pioneer 8400 dvd deck. It will be installed on Thursday this week. I should have all the parts by today so maybe Wednesday or Thursday Ill try it all out on the TV here at the house to make sure everything works.

I'll keep this thread updated.

BTW, what deck did you go with?

I haven't bought it yet but I am going to pick up the AVH-P3400BH this weekend. I like the one you got the detatchable face is nice on that deck along with 2 USB ports and high output pre outs. That is just sweet. I just really like the styling of the AVH-P3400BH though with the . What kind of vehicle you installing it into and are you going to do the relay bypass so it works while in drive?

Putting it into a new Nissan Xterra and also doing the bypass.

Here is a pic of all the hardware working. As you can see its not the greatest quality on a 55inch screen and it scale 100% perfectly. But I feel that it should scale a lot better on a smaller screen.

LOL.... Are you on thenewx.org forum? I drive an Xterra also. I can't wait to see what yours looks like when in the X. Might just convince me to go with the 7 inch screen instead of the 5.8

I'll post pics of everything on Friday.

BTW, just found the size of the barrel for power supply for the composite converter. its 2.1mm (or 5mm outer jacket)

Update

Everything is installed but having issues. I have narrowed it down to the composite cable going bad or the rca inputs on the dvd deck are bad (this better not be the problem).

So its back to work for the next few days. I hope maybe Wednesday or Thursday this coming week I will tear it all apart and fix the issue. Once fixed I'll post pics and a video of netflix running in the car. The good news is the usb to 2.1mm barrel power cable works like a charm!

Must say its nice to be able to stream all my music + stuff like pandora to my my car through Bluetooth.

Stay with me... almost there!

I also bought the 8400BH and love it. Did you ever get this video input working?

I'm very interested in trying this.

Just searched through google trying to find a usb to RCA and I came across this forum. I have a pioneer 7" unit in my car, used usb to hdmi to rca converters and the quality is terrible for picture. I can not get audio with my current adapter (Could be the adapter fault for everything actually). Attempted to use my old incredible micro-usb to rca adapter and it does not fit. Still no solution in sight for me.

I have a Galaxy Nexus and I successfully connected it to the RCA Video Input on a AVH-P4300DVD. I just ordered an AVH-P8400BH. With double the resolution, it'll look insane.

You need:

MHL Adapter
HDMI to RCA powered converter box
5V DC USB Barrel connector for the converter box
Micro USB cable to power the MHL Adapter
RCA Component cable (Red White Yellow)
HDMI Cable

Get a Micro USB extension too because the MHL plugs right into the phone and because of the thick HDMI cable and microUSB connected to it, it's bulky and annoying. It's best to wire the whole thing cleanly behind the glove box and run the USB extension to your phone. That way it's clean, non obtrusive, and awesome.

Connect the MHL to the phone, the Micro USB (for power) to the MHL, and the HDMI to the MHL on one end and to the converted box on the other. Connect the 5V Barrel DC to your box to power it on and connect the RCAs to the box and to the back of your HU. The phone will automatically switch to landscape and mirror to your screen. You can play music while you display whatever you want on the screen.

TIP: If you wanna use your Nexus as a GPS unit, you can now download Google Maps to your device so if you're roaming or have limited data, your phone won't need to download the maps on the fly. You can download whichever territory you want and it even works in NAV mode. It's great!

Next step: figure out how to output the RCA to RGB and connect it to the P8400 RGB port (normally used for the Avic-U220 which I'm selling because it's garbage). They, everything will be perfect.

I've been doing some research on this and I found a cheaper option for around 15 bucks that includes all cables you need to hook up the nexus to an rca enabled TV.

MHL to HDMI
Amazon.com: SANOXY Micro USB to HDMI MHL Adapter Cable for HTC Evo 3D, HTC Evo 4G Tablet, HTC Sensation 4G, HTC Flyer, Samsung I997 Infuse 4G, Galaxy S2: Electronics

Here is the HDMI to RCA cable
Amazon.com: 5 Feet 1.5m Hdmi Male to 3rca 3 RCA Video Audio Av Cable: Electronics

Hope this helps, I am not sure if it works yet but it is a cheaper option that should do the trick

Did that setup work for you? If so, exactly what I need to view Gmaps on my 2011 Nissan Murano nav deck, from a GNex (just switched from IPhone :p). Nissan maps were already out of date when the car was new & they want $249 to update:mad:

Thanks to you & others for posting this thread.

No, that product will not work. HDMI is a digital transmission. Composite (red/white/yellow) is analog. There is no converter so the monitor looking for an analog signal will be getting ?????? who knows what.

Thanks Tim K. You are dead right of course as I found out!

I hooked up a system that included a converter as proposed by dalumberjack and and successfully transmitted my GNex screen to the nav display. The picture was not fantastic but passable, there being significant loss in sharpness (see pics). However, those displays will only show when the parking brake is engaged, so while driving you get no video but do get audio from the GNex. This means that I can use the car's nav system map display as a reference while receiving audio turn instructions from Gmaps or MapQuest on the GNex. Of course, audio can also be transmitted via Bluetooth.

There are aftermarket bypass kits that will override the vehicle's brake and speed censors, allowing full time use of GNex nav/phone etc while in motion - eg. see here. But given the loss in video quality after converting from MHL>HDMI>RCA plus safety concerns I cannot justify the expense of a bypass kit, money which I would rather put toward an uptodate portable Garmin GPS. However I think the simple MHL>RCA conversion is worth it, and will keep to watch YouTube, news breaks etc while parked.

Hopefully my next car will have a digital video input allowing an Android phone to be plugged in without having to convert the video signal.

Thanks to all for their input on this thread.
