Who else is waiting?

So I guess that for us it comes down to:

A. Get my Droid X replaced under insurance and keep our current plan with unlimited data.

B. Keep using the DX with a bad display while we wait for newer phones whose details and release dates are unknown at this time and hope the report is right and that unlimited data plans are still possible when the phones are available.

C. Wait until both new phones and the shared data plans come out and hope we can still either keep unlimited data or save money with one of the shared data plans.

D. Get current 4G devices now knowing we can get either unlimited data or one of the current double data plan offerings.

Not being a big risk taker, I'm leaning toward the latter option unless I see some confirmation soon that VZW is not going to eliminate the grandfathered unlimited data plans as they had previously stated.

Pretty sure, I've seen in several articles that Verizon has stated they would give people heads up to elimination of unlimited data plans for grandfathered users so they can make their decisions with how to deal with it. So, I'm waiting until they announce its implementation date. Then I'll start worrying about which 4G device that is out now I want to jump to. If they decide not to ditch unlimited, then all the better and I'll keep rocking the X. If they renege and don't give heads up, then I'll start considering that other evil empire.

I was waiting for a new phone, since both my contract and upgrade are due in September. But since Verizon decided to cancel unlimited data when you upgrade to a new device, I'm going to switch over to AT&T instead.

Here's my logic:
1. I'm in the DC area(99.99%) of the time. I already have an ATT iPhone from work and it works better than Verizon does.
2. Most phone deals, especially the Nexus devices in the market, are for GSM based services.
3. Screw you Verizon. First the pay to pay scheme, now the unlimited data being yanked out? Too big to fail sounds familiar, congrats on being the new Circuit City. I hate Verizon with a passion.

Let's see if I understand this...

On Item 2 Verizon offers the Galaxy Nexus as a subsidized phone and it is currently a $199.99 upgrade, thus your upgrading to a Nexus in September would probably be $199.99 plus a tiered data plan. Since you apparently would be starting a new contract with AT&T then for AT&T it would seem to be $399.99 from Google plus a tiered data plan. So the same Nexus phone available with both Verizon and AT&T, but apparently $200 more with AT&T.

On Item 3 you are mad at Verizon and going to leave because they are eliminating unlimited data plans for those with subsidized new phones or upgrades. And you are going to switch to a provider that already implemented the same concept and that also throttles anyone with an existing unlimited data plan that exceeds the amount of data supported by the tiered plans.

I'm having trouble seeing the logic other than that you're mad at Verizon.

If he buys the Nexus from Google, he does NOT need a contract. He just brings his own equipment and would be on a monthly no contract plan. His phone and no strings attached. Nexus would not be subsidized phone.

You are correct, I should have said that it would be "new service" rather than "a new contract", but it would still involve the same voice and tiered data plans with AT&T, they just wouldn't be committed to them beyond a month-to-month basis.

The Motorola Mobility merger with Google and the relationship of Motorola with Verizon does make it seem likely that there will be Nexus devices on Verizon in the future.

i'm still happy with the DX. i think i'll hit two years in November.

Still using mine as a daily wi-fi device...keeps chugging-along (had mine since launch day).

Although this morning I noticed that I had a totally drained battery--I usually power it down after work until the next morning. Just plugged it in, recharged it a few minutes, rebooted and it was fine.

It just works :).

Even though you buy the device and do a month to month with AT&T, you still pay the same for service as if you were under contract.
For what it is worth, i have ended my contract with VZW. The way new phones come out and my addiction for them, it just made no sense to cripple myself with 2 years with one device!
I now own a new AT&T HTC One X. AT&T is much stronger in my area than VZW. I have no 4G with either carrier.
I walked into a AT&T store and bought the phone. I had ordered a sim card from Straight Talk. Installed it and am on AT&T towers with only $45 per month, no contract. Data use is NOT an issue for me so roughly 2gb (Straight Talks unknown limit......fair usage policies) is fine. I get download speeds of over 5 Mbps versus VZW of only 800 Kbps !!
$45 vs. $120 per month...............that alone will pay for the phone in 7 months!

NOT for everyone but in my case it just works :)

BTW...........am still doing what Scary says............using my DX on wifi and it works fine:)

I'm going to take a wait and see approach to this unlimited data news. Latest is you will be able to keep unlimited if you buy an unsubsidized phone: Verizon: You can have unlimited data... just no device subsidies | Mobile - CNET News. This might be good, or they might price the tiered data plans to make them look better than unlimited.

now that is a smart business move by VZW. do I agree with it? it's a toss-up, but I've been wanting to get newer phones more often than the every 2 years, so this might be the push I need to just buy the phone I want and not wait on VZW to toss me some money to make me feel better.

WOW, 800kb is fast! I have to admit that VZW's 3G sucks. I get around 250-450. I can't wait till the SIII and my first 4G phone.

It's my understanding that even if you buy a phone at full price now and switch to 4G, when you then use your upgrade later for the Fighter you'll be forced into one of the tiered data plans.

I'm in the same boat. My contract isn't up until October but Verizon has offered me an early upgrade. I'm hoping the Fighter comes out before they force me into a tiered data plan. I've also thought of buying a used 4G phone now and then buy the Fighter at full price when it's released. Until more information comes I'm just sitting in a holding pattern.

Only if the Fighter is released after the tiered plans take affect. There is still no official word on when either is going to take place.

I ended up caving and placed my pre-order for the S3. Just didn't want to take the chance of losing unlimited.

Well, hope Samsung do not disappoint meh. After the original Omnia, I said never again.. The wife's GS2 seems to keep her happy other than the outgoing volume issue but she won't allow me to open it to try and fix. So, the GS3 was ordered yesterday. Hopefully Verizon/Motorola will pull a sneak move before or during my 14days and i'll still have a shot @ a newer Droid device.

Doh!! Just seen the leaked pics of Razr HD on Droidlife. But I know I can't stand to wait a few more months, 1 more is already too long.

Same for me, really wanted the fighter/HD but was tired of waiting plus I wanted to keep my unlimited data so I pre-ordered a Pebble Blue S3. However, I really like the looks in those leaked Razr HD pictures from today - damn it Moto!

I'm keeping my X as a backup, maybe my kids will use it as a IPod touch kind of device. I'll still lurk in this forum, but I'd still like to thank the Droid X community here for being basically awesome.

Pre-ordered the 32Gb Pebble Blue GS3 the other day. My DX battery is short on life. I've been getting less and less life out of it, and now I'm starting to notice "the bulge". I've got a couple of cheepy aftermarket batteries, but one shows 100% till it dies in 8 hours and the other shows an X over the battery for about 8 hours till it dies. I've never used these batteries, I just bought them for "just in case" which the DX has NEVER given me a reason to switch batteries in the middle of the day. I still love my DX, but I can't wait till my GS3 gets here!

Same here, I really wanted to wait for a quad core phone but I didn't want to lose my unlimited data....About a month ago my DX quit working so they replaced it with a DX2 which I actually like, but the Galaxy S3 caught my eye....plus I got the 32GB for $169...at checkout I got an $80 discount which was unexpected! I also read where some people got a $100 discount....
