(VZW) Nexus 4.0.4 Update - First Impressions

I noticed this when we first saw images of what the new update addresses. Did you notice how vague the wording is pertaining to "one-way audio"? This is what the update says: "Complete calls without experiencing choppy audio, clicking noises, and one-way audio noises" lol

They mean one way audio no-noises? And clicking noises, what is that... also choppy?

I've seen people complain of muted mic, robotic voices, garbled voices, but not the above. Maybe I'm just too literal

Actually, I can attest to all 3. And I'm still having problems with them after 4.0.4. Choppy audio - my notifications sometimes skip or repeat over themselves like a skipping record in a way. Also my music (Google music or Amazon MP3) just stops playing as if I'd pressed stop. Clicking noises - when I'm on a call I hear the clicking noises. I also heard it when playing Riptide GP. One place I read, said it could be due to an overloading of the CPU, but I dunno. One way audio noises - When on a call, shortly after the clicking begins, my speaker begins to cut in and out so I can't hear everything the other person is saying. Eventually it cuts out completely. I assume, though don't know for certain, that the other person can hear my fine. I tried the Wired Headset Routing toggle app but haven't found it to help my problems. Anyone else out there similar to me?

Good grief, if mine did this I would swap it out quick.. The only time I have muting problems is when I have the phone hooked up to a non Samsung charger. The rest of the time no problems. I hate so many are having the call problems

Just wanted to add that Google Wallet seems to be once again supported for devices that are rooted. I had originally installed Wallet via the market trick. But once I rooted and Wallet received an update, I was unable to update through the market.

Now after the OTA update, I was able to update Wallet to the latest version.

[edit]I'm fully stock except rooted and unlocked.

It still says "Unsupported device". I too was able to update but if you go to the play store on your phone and search for google wallet you will see that it doesn't show up. It also doesn't show up in my apps under the "installed" tab. It only shows up in the "All" tab.

EDIT: LOL I just checked the play store on my computer and it says it is a compatible device. So its a no go on the phone its self (using the play app) but a go if you install from a browser.

ah yes, you are correct. I guess that's because Verizon still doesn't officially support it.

But what has changed is once you have installed Wallet, you'll once again be able to keep it updated even if you're rooted through the market.

Yeah I just happened to be going through the "All" list and noticed there was an update for it. I have no idea if it was like that before the update or not.

I got the update yesterday, and the LTE reception has definitely improved. Mine used to switch to 3G in my room, but now I have solid 2 bars of 4G anywhere in my room. Also at work, I had 4 bars all day instead of 3. I haven't experienced any call-related issues but this is definitely an upgrade.

However, it still wouldn't pull me back from switching to Sprint after the contract is up.

I notice my signal is performing about 7 dbm better around my apartment, at my desk at work will be the real test, it used to drop to 3G about once or twice an hour. The camera launches faster from the lock screen and I actually think picture quality has improved a little. I seem to notice better sharpness and a deeper saturation.

The one thing I'm not enjoying comes when I unlock my phone. About 1 out of 5 times there's a pretty serious stutter while it unlocks to either my homescreen or whatever app I have open. It never did that on 4.0.2, so far that is my only complaint. I've had my Nexus since launch day and it's performed very well for me, apart from the dropping randomly while at work. Is anyone else notice the stutter or quick freeze while unlocking their phone? I've done a couple battery pulls and I'm using Nova launcher if that could make a difference

I don't use any launcher but i did notice the unlock freeze problem right away. Very annoying and did not happen in the prior version.
I am stock, not rooted yet. Swype also isn't working right, no word prediction. Also very annoying, and i've reinstalled twice.

I've had the same issue since the update. It also seems to carry over for a good 3-4 seconds once the phone is actually unlocked and on the homescreen...at that point, there's a significant stutter/lag when I try to navigate through the 5 homescreens. Doesn't happen every time, but happens enough to be a bit annoying.

When the phone unlocks the way it should though (sans-stutter), I've noticed that transitions and animations seem to be more smooth. I found them to be fast already before the update, but they seem to be even a bit faster now. Might just be me, but there seems to be a little more zip to them and they seem to be more fluid.

I've been very pleased with the update so far. The phone is definitely snappier in general. I love how when I'm done typing a text and hit the home button the keyboard clears out immediately with no lag now. Camera app seems smoother also.

I'm one of the lucky few who had non of the bigger issues before so I was a little apprehensive about updating.

The one new issue I'm having is with the photo albums. On 4g I get 2 picasa web albums that say "failed to load album info retry later". What's weird is that about 12 other picasa albums load fine. Wifi does not give me that error.

I've noticed that my signal has been much better since the update. But along with that, my phone calls have been chewing through my battery life. One 15 minute phone conversation took my battery from 95% charge to 35%. I had another conversation yesterday with the same results but I chalked it up to a fluke or by bluetooth draining it.

This is a known issue. You probably have the phone set to auto brightness, right? Turn that off, and the unlock lag is nonexistent.

Thanks,

Matt

I received the update automatically (didn't do anything to get it that I know of). It installed fairly quickly with no problems.

I haven't noticed a single thing mentioned in this thread. I've never had the call quality issues that people are talking about, so I guess I'm lucky.

No, I've only noticed two things about the update:

1: that when I turn on my phone (press the power button while in standby), I notice that the display brightens as it turns on. perhaps this is a feature that was discussed on this forum already, but it was new to me. I'm fairly certain it wasn't there before :)

2: a tiny issue, but I use the Scoreboard app from Google to keep track of my favorite teams' games. Previously, I've been really annoyed because the background for the app's notifications was black with black text. Clearly, not a good thing. Now it's white background with black text. Much better.

Other than that, I haven't really noticed any differences. I'll have to use it for a while to tell...

I am in NY area and still no update on my phone. I am not planning to force it, really like to see if VZW can get their together.

By the way, I got my SGN on the first day it became available, Dec 15, and it really works great. I have no problems with it. Maybe because I'm in a major city, but it also travels well too.

It hasn't happened to me that I'm aware of in a few months. But it has happened, twice maybe? I think yeah. I was talking to my sister for ~10 minutes once, I was talking, she was going "hello, hello" I said what? She said "hello?". It's like the mic gets muted.

Had that issue too. Quite often too. I forced the update but haven't tested call quality yet.
