(VZW) Nexus 4.0.4 Update - First Impressions

I got my update this morn. No problems. Then again If I had any of the problems I just read about I would not have this phone. Everything seems a little smoother... Could just be a placebo effect. It may be the same but I feel its better just because I got the update. I did notice a signal improvement. I just charged up my phone to 100 and I shall run an extensive tiny tower battery drain test.. lol

Handoff between networks is much improved.

I have had this phone since VZW release day, and have always felt the battery life was perfectly sufficient. If I'm on wifi, it easily lasts through the work day. Out and about, it will be toast by 3pm or so on normal usage, but a few minutes on the car charger between errands fixes that problem.

However, since getting the update over the weekend, it seems to me the battery life is significantly reduced. My phone has mostly been sitting on my desk today while I have been working out back, and I came in to find the battery at 4%. If I don't play with it during the day, it's usually still over 50% by this point in the day.

Not sure what's going on here yet, but wanted to contribute a data point. Wifi is still on, I did check and confirm that.

3G/4G seems better. Not perfect, but I don't have to toggle airplane mode on and off to get a radio to hook up anymore. Sometimes takes a little time, but radios hook up their own now.

No more random reboots while listening to Pandora! This was huge for me as I listen to Pandora all day at work. I used to get reboots every 5-10 minutes. None for two days now. Woot!

I've only had a couple of calls so far, but no mic mute yet. Keeping fingers crossed.

Ltek1,

I'm in the same exact boat. The update and fixes are wonderful, however, with making no other changes, my battery life is much much worse. At this point in the day with typical usage I would be at about 50% battery. I am below 10% now. With is with the seidio 3800mAh battery. I am on wifi most of the day.

I am tempted to factory reset and start fresh to clean everything up. Has anyone read about anyone doing this and having their batter problems fixed?

I am also getting a ton of those errors from the OS that try and send a bug report to self through Gmail. The name escapes me. The one that takes a screen shot of the lock screen when it reports.

Thanks.

Continuing to find more and more issues post-update

Battery usage is far below previous. (No, you're not the only one noticing this).
Went to create a speeddial icon on the Home page and pressed the 1x1 space expecting to get instructions. Instead got wallpaper options.
Stock Dialer will not populate call history
Continued serious latency in certain applications and frequent app crashes, 3rd party as well as stock apps.

I don't really like the new gallery app... its way more laggy than the one from 4.0.2 I may try to overwrite it with the old version...

and the lag on the lockscreen really annoys me too. I'm tempted to go back to 4.0.2. I'll give it a couple weeks and see if it settles down or I get used to it...

Terrible battery life here after update. Also still dropping all data and service in 4g. Replacement arrives tomorrow will see if that does anything. I went through 2 battery's today one stock and one extended with about 2 hrs total screen time. Unreal bad battery life after update. Wired head set doesn't echo anymore to the people on the other side of the line. That's a positive I guess. Kinda seems like 4g isn't as fast as it was before either.

Ok, so now that many of you are on 4.0.4, I want to ask a question about odd unlock to camera behavior that wasn't a problem on 4.0.2:

If you take a picture, then go to the gallery, then exit to your homescreen, the next time you slide to unlock directly to the camera app, does it take you to the camera or the gallery?

If I was in the gallery last, I get taken back to the gallery, which is weird behavior and not at all what should happen if you're trying to get quick access to the camera. It's actually faster to just unlock your phone normally and click on the camera app in many cases because that never takes you to the gallery first. Do other 4.0.4ers see this behavior or is it just me. Not a huge deal, but definitely a minor annoyance that has caused me to miss more than a few impromptu photo moments.

This happened to me twice when I was on stock 4.0.2. Not since the update to stock 4.0.4, but it's only been 3 days on 4.0.4.

I've noticed an issue post-update that is pretty annoying. I don't know for a fact that it's related to the update, but it never happened before the update. I will pick up my phone and press the power button, and the screen will come on but the touchscreen is not responsive at all. I can't slide the unlock thing over to access the phone. I have turned it off and back on a few times and it still doesn't do anything. I have held down the power button, which brings up the menu allowing me to power off, but since the screen doesn't respond I can't do anything with this menu.

This has happened twice since I got the update late Friday night, and the only way I have been able to get it working again is to remove the battery and replace it, re-booting the phone.

Anyone else have this happen? (I am stock, unrooted, by the way.)

After I posted this, it didn't happen for several days so I thought maybe it had resolved itself but it just happened to me again. Very annoying.

Since the 4.0.4 update Minimalistic Text widgets work for a short time and then freeze. A reboot gets the widgets working again; but only for a short time. I've played with the Minimalistic Text update interval with no success.

Additionally the Simple Calendar widget and other widgets seems to be freezing also. It gets stuck thinking it is about the same time the Minimalistic Text widgets stop working.

I'm not convinced this update is an improvement!!!

Finally got my phone to update, after replacing some files that were causing the red triangle error.

First thing I noticed is when you're on the lock screen and you press power to get the options for Airplane mode, Shut Down and Volume, it now gives you the choice of silent, vibrate (new) and sound on. Pretty nice.

I was also able to use the browser trick to get the official Market Google Wallet app again, except instead of switching to the Market, I just installed from the website.

Haven't really had time to play around though since I updated right before work. But I wasn't having most of the problems I had seen others report on here. Hopefully I won't get the random reboot anymore.

Thought I would give it a few cycles, and yes the battery life is far worse than prior to update. I have the extended battery and used to get roughly 27-30 hours out of it before recharging. Now, unfortunately it is only getting 8 maybe 12 if I'm lucky. Also went to see Prometheus today - good movie - and only thing I did was turn to vibrate and my phone felt like a hot pocket in my pocket only an hour into film. WTF! I normally carry with a Seidio active case with belt clip so I guess I never noticed this GOD awful heat sink that my phone has turned into after the update.

I'm not a poweruser, but I do use Nova Launcher and a few widgets. My benchmark for battery life is Skydroid, a golf GPS app. on 4.0.2 I would get in a round of golf and be left with anywhere from 20-30 percent battery life left. Something in the app itself would reset the phone several times a round as well.

After 4.0.4 I'm finishing a round with 50-60 percent battery life left and there have been zero phone reboots.

Now on the flip side, I also use Endomondo for tracking running and biking, and it seems to really eat the battery now, unless I manually exit and then swipe the app out of the task switcher.

Battery life is way worse now. Before it was ok, definitely manageable. Now I'm down to 65-70% by 9:00am after taking it off the charger at 6:30am - just carrying it around in my pocket and getting a few emails. No surfing, no texting, no facebook......

30-35% used in 2.5 hours? How much screen on time? What does the batter status show used up all the battery?

That's what I'm getting with 4g on, crappy reception that comes and goes, checking every 15 minutes for mail, other things.... do you have sync on?

Edit: what's different ,if anything, from your old routine? I notice my drain isn't as bad when I'm not at work.
