I recently purchased a razr maxx, and I think I want to root it. Judging on looking around it seems as though ICS will be released pretty soon. Should I wait to root until then? Also, if you think I should root now, could someone point me in the direction of a good guide that goes step by step, because I have never done it before, and I would rather not brick my phone. Thanks!

here is a link to help you out before rooting.

Download this DroidRazrUtility. It is the batman one(when you open it, you'll understand) then follow directions. Your phone should be connected with the most current drivers and on "Charge only mode"
Droid Razr Utility 1.51 [Contains 6.12.173 Fastboot Files] - DroidRzr.com

I personally have unrooted my phone and removed all traces of root i.e. apps. I am waiting for the ICS OTA to be pushed out. I will then reroot(maybe) I plan on doing a Factory Reset before the update. But that is just my preference.

I would read everything on the Root pages before doing anything to your phone. You can brick(render your phone useless turning it into a $700 brick) Be careful.

You can still receive the OTA ics update even though you are rooted. It is actually better to root now, use voodoo root keeper and save your root, then if the ics ota update does come you can accept it then restore root with the voodoo root keeper. There is no guarantee that the root utilities will still work on the official ics release
