Wondered if anyone has tried the new Gimp out and what are your thoughts. I'm still not sure if I like it or not. I got so used to how they used to do things now all the sudden you can't do things like that anymore for instance I would be working on a file and go file Save as and save my work as a ".png" file now it makes you export the file to png and only save as xcf or whatever the default is. I mean really this is an improvement how? Also the Brushes are much different now. It's going to take me a while to get used to them. So what's your thoughts? What features do you like/dislike.

Ugh have to compile it myself? Just cant be bothered

Edit > How to Upgrade to Gimp 2.8 in Ubuntu

No compiling it using fedora 17. from the article you post though it really looks like the only part that needs to be "Compiled" is the plug in for "Save for Web"

I've been using it a lot this weekend and I'm adjusting to it. Still not to crazy about exporting into another format to save my files work. I'm definately happy about the single window mode though I was always closing out of the Layout trying to close something else now it's not a big issue for me :)

In what ways did you feel restricted?

Lack of high-end CMYK support. This is why Photoshop rules.

It has been on the roadmap for over... 10 years now.

Roadmap - GIMP Developer Wiki

And each version, there has been promises but it never pans out.

Also, lack of mask for layer groups.
Still not 32bit color channel support in 2.8

I can go on why it is still a hobbyists app.
You work in CMYK if you intend to do any real print work. RGB is fine for the web. Hence, the "hobbyist" app.

Adobe Photoshop is a $1,000 (USD) program, mind you..a professional program with a professional price tag to match. Whereas GIMP is free(price and source code). I suppose many hobbyists can't really afford or can justify dropping a grand on an image editing application.

Matter of interest, does the much cheaper, consumer and hobbyist oriented Photoshop Elements have professional functions like CMYK separation?

For my modest needs, GIMP is just fine. If you're a graphics professional, you need Photoshop, it's the industry standard.

It's like professional audio production, the industry standard is Avid Pro Tools, An extremely expensive and complex professional audio production suite. Probably no professional recording engineer is going to be using the FOSS Audacity program.

I have trouble with the save as dialog - in Photoshop you can do everything in one box.

I have a CR2 photo
Open in Camera RAW

Save as:

Dimensions: 4x6 in (lock dimensions)
Resolution: 72 DPI (I'm emailing it)
Jpg quality: (popup - 1-12 settings)
Format: JPG

The save as dialog in Gimp 2.6 doesn't seem to look like this. At least on my copy - it looks like some choices are metric, some standard. I've selected inches as default, and I'm lousy at converting.

Also looks like new version doesn't run on 11.04
