OK well I'm canceling my Verizon contract and switching to spring because it will cut the bill in half. But it will take about 2months to completely pay off Verizon. So I was wonderi ng if I activated an old phone on my number if it would clear my esn on my galaxy nexus so I can sell it immediately to pay for my g3 with sprint. So if h didn't get it what I wanna b able to do is sell my g nexus now by activating another phone and deactivating my nexus .

Yes, you can activate a dumbphone and still pay on the smartphone plan, but what you agreed to when you signed your contract was a smartphone plan for two years, and they will not allow you to reduce to a dumbphone plan.

That is incorrect. If you switch the smart phone out for a dumb phone, the data charge will drop off. You will only be charged the $9.99+ taxes and fees for that line. You will however have to fulfill the 2 year agreement, either by paying an etc, or keeping the line open for the life of the contract.

This is providing that you are on a family plan with 3 or more phones and this phone is not the primary.

The plan is a family plan and we are canceling the whole thing, every single line. So I'm trying to keep from having my nexus locked down for the 2months its gonna take to pay Verizon off so that I can sell it say today or tomorrow.

Yeah, just put a dumbphone on the line. As long as the phone isn't active on a line, there shouldn't be any problems selling it.
