Help What factors about the the S3 should I know before buying?

I have same feeling. Looks like it scrolls slower. Actually if you swipe your finger fast over screen to scroll, it stop soon after you release your finger from screen.

Pretty much exactly how i feel yeah, ive been reading around a bit and it seems its just a commin small "fault" with android, guess its just something you gotta get used to :)

I do on the other hand also hear a bit of creaking from the back panel when i put the phone to my ear, also a minor detail, i would rather have a bit of creaking and be able to remove the back cover tbh.

It also does get a bit toasty when playing a game, it was running max payne mobile, wich i do guess does take a bit of power to run, then again when i come to think of it, even my crappy iphone 3g got quite toasty.

Hi all
I'm new to the world of android and this is my first post on this site.

So iv had my s3 for a few days now and it's all good apart from me being an apple freak. Jus getting used to android. Enuf sed.

Here's one problem iv come across.

Iv not been able to get through 5 mins of a movie while using allshare play to my telly, it just freezes and cuts out, I don't know if it is my wifI connection because my signals very good. After several attempts i gave up.

If anyone knows what's wrong giv us a headsup.

Cheers all.
Post you later.

Nope, Swype isn't standard with mine. I'm glad, too. The less bloated, the better.

wallpaper doesn't scroll

The wallpaper scrolls if you use the stock wallpapers, but not with your own. However, if you download PicSpeed Wallpapers (an all-in-one wallpaper app) you can apply scrollable wallpaper with that.

As for general problems, here are the ones I've noticed (I think most have been mentioned already):

  • Home screen (either with TouchWiz or with a replacement app - I use Go Launcher EX) needs to reload after unlocking the screen or exiting an app.
  • Scroll doesn't move smoothly sometimes.
  • Stock browser is horrible at reflowing text, and same on most replacements except Opera (coming from HTC, I have high expectations).
  • Default keyboard has its own quirks which take a little getting used to.
  • Home button isn't as tactile or easy to find as some handsets.
  • Default gallery pulls in a lot of stuff you won't want, and no way to filter it out.
  • There is the odd bit of slow down, it doesn't work completely flawlessly.

I've had mine for 4 days now. I love it! I upgraded from a HTC Desire and after using the S3 since Saturday, when I pick the Desire up now it seems so small! It's amazing how quickly you get used to something new.

I was having trouble deciding between the S3 and the HTC One X, but in the end I went for the S3 as it supposedly has better battery life, the battery is removable and there's a microSD card slot. Having not held an S3 or even seen one in the flesh, my only concern was build quality, but I'm really quite impressed with it in that respect. Yes, the back is plastic, but it all fits together nicely and there's no unwanted movement/creaking or anything like that.

The only niggles I've had have been minor software related things, but I sorted all of those via downloadable apps. For instance, the stock keyboard has Swype-like functionality, but it doesn't work in all apps but that was no big deal as I just installed Swype itself. I guess that's the beauty of Android - if there's something you need or want to change, somebody has probably made an app that will do what you need and often for free.

This is the first time I've been wowed by any piece of tech that I've owned. The screen is amazing. Build quality is decent (better than I expected). Battery life is very good for a phone of this power/size. The included headphones aren't brilliant, but they're still better than you get with almost all other phones. I got 48GB of extra DropBox space for free. I really have no complaints about what you get for your money, especially considering I got this phone free on contract for

The one thing I hope does NOT suck is the radio reception. How is the reception for our European friends? :)

The worst radio reception I ever had in the US was the Nokia N900 and the best is the current Droid Razr.

Added: Germany has similar topography to Kentucky and uses CDMA (I think), so would be nice to hear especially from some German users!

Yes, what do you mean? When I plug my S3 into my computer via USB, there is the additional drive in Computer for me to explore and copy files from.

It is MTP mass storage, so not the same file freedom and speed of pre Honeycomb/ICS devices. Previous OS's used true USB mass storage like a sd card or hard drive is used. Much faster and less issues and you can multitask the drive. With MTP you can only do one transfer process and can not view files at same time. Plus can be picky.

Added:

MTP sucks in comparison, but still better than the Apple way.

Dang, I like Swype. My Epic 4G Touch came with it, figured the S3 would too. Or does my Epic just have the stock keyboard like fried mentiond: "the stock keyboard has Swype-like functionality"? Hmm, off to see just what I have on there. Whatever it is, I like it and hope the S3 has the same thing.

eta - just checked, definitely Swype. Boo if the S3 is Swypeless.

Using the 3 network in the UK the signal works really well - Love 3! I use to have Orange and the phone never worked in the office or at home! Pointless having that unless I made calls outside all the time! I'm getting my phone replaced however because the headphone socket is faulty. The volume button on the stock headphones and my Sennheiser ones does not work for some reason when plugged in the phone. Also the socket is kinda loose as when I plug in the headphones I have to twiddle it a bit for it to stay in. So my phone is being exchanged for another. Not had it 2 weeks yet but really love this phone. Hope the headphone thing is sorted soon.

I am currently with telia, but have switched to 3, so far the reception have been great, my old phone lost reception quite a few times every day, have yet to happen on this, hopefully my 3g will run better on the new carrier, because telia's where i live (denmark) 3g range seems pretty useless, never works where you want it to, i.e, where there is no wireless :)

Got one question that also have been bothering me a bit, mine seems to get lets say warm, mostly when handling games, tried out n.o.v.a 3 and i guess i can understand why that would make it heat up a bit, because damn that is pretty amazing for a phone, but also when im just sitting in the train to and from work, can it have anything to do with the fact that it keeps getting thrown on and off 3G?

That's because it supports kinetic scrolling with acceleration. If you swipe two to three times fast, it'll go really far. If you only do it once, it'll scroll a couple of pages.

does any have info how quick the GPS locks? My last Samsung (Moment) wouldn't ever lock even standing outside in a wide open field. My HTC EVO 3D locks in the back corner of my basement where it's the most underground (other side has walk-out/on the side of a hill). Thanks

GPS locks very fast, about 2-3 seconds (even inside).

Well I've read through the whole thread and seem not to have most of the problems everyone has. Pressing the home key to get to the unlock screen is instant, everything is silky smooth, reception is a million times better than my iPhone4S and I love it to bits.

The build is solid and my pocket appreciates it's light weight and smooth curves.

The only gripe I could think of was the default keyboard sucked. But I bought SwiftKey X and it's stunning. I do wish I could change the look of the Email and SMS apps as the black background and sucky colours look like they came from a 1980's mainframe. But I could download an app for that.

I don't use it horizontally unless I'm playing games and I did find it too easy to accidentally press the back or options keys. But once you've got your grip right it's fine.

I don't use the voice control, but then the only time I did on the iPhone was to ask it stupid questions for a laugh.

It's a truly epic phone.

I don't like the keyboard much with predictive text. Coming from iOS the keyboard and predictive text was much better. That's about it for me. I love the phone and am really enjoying the customisation with android.

Once I learn how to sync my music I'll be even happier. If anyone can point me in the easiest direction to sync my music from iTunes on a mac I'll be very appreciative

yea search double twist on google or the play store it lets you sync android with itunes.;)

I just got mine Glalxy s3 a couple of days ago,
and have to get used to it, switching over from iPhone
Right now, struggling all day to transfer my iPhone contacts to the new sgs3 device.

It's a real issue for me as I don't like to hand type a 150 contacts.

But the blame rather goes to Apple.
I tried the advertised Software easy phone tunes.... it may works well to sync from
iTunes but it won't handle contacts transfer as you can't store your iPhone contact's on iTunes.
Apart from this, it's a very nice phone will keep you busy to discover all the features...including updating ring tones and sounds witch I found not that special... The vivid colors just as the sgs2 will make u happy any time you look at your phone... I would buy it again...

Had my Galaxy s 3 for 3 weeks and my calls keep dropping in and out.
When i talk to people they say that the call is echoing, very distant most of the time ( meaning can hardly hear me ) and call drops where they can't hear me at all but only for a second or two. The call will then come back again. not good.... i have phoned samsung and I'm sending my phone back either for a repair or replacement.
