Help Orange Firmware.!

Hi, I take it your getting it from an orange shop, if so they usualy have a working demo you could try, failing that you're guaranteed a Generic phone at the likes of CPW or Phones 4 U.also by mid next week we should know more.. Cheers.

Well i won't be going to CPW or Phones 4U because they don't appear to offer the Panther Extra plans... guess I'll just have to hope they open the box up and show me the one I'd be getting because there is zero guarantee the working demo will be the same! :(

Hi Jojo, I`m really starting to think now of the offer from the upgrades manager of going to Carphone or Phones 4 U for a Guaranteed Generic phone (and keeping all my loyalty extras) i can`t see us getting an orange firmware free phone otherwise...I cant get back to him now till next week so i`ll just have to wait and see...!!!

p.s my phone i sent back didn`t have the orange logo on startup, only on restart. (a guaranteed sign that its been oranged..!!!)

After being with Orange for over 10 years, not once did any of there phones come to me as unbranded. This is why I have moved to CPW as this is the only way that you will receive a truly unbranded handset.

So they have left you without a phone??

The techi asked me to send in my phone and i asked what to do in the meantime and he said he could give me a 30 pound credit for a pay as you go phone and started laughing, well so did he.

He agreed to do the same swap as I had this morning, I give them all back and they give me a brand new phone in original packaging. So by tuesday i will have three boxes and three headsets lol, at least I can sell these on ebay lol

I truly hate orange, but i keep holding on lol what for i dont know.

Like I said keep me posted and I will keep you posted

Have a good weekend

I'm Jessica by the way :):)

My S3 arrived this morning from Orange.

I was initially quite surprised as on booting up, the exploding Orange symbol appeared, and I expected the usual over-the-top branding and bloatware. But there doesn't appear to be any, apart from the tiny (and useless) Orange Plus app.

Having checked, it too does not have the software update version.

I can't believe that yet again Orange are putting their own restrictions on this phone.

It must surely contravene some element of the Trade Descriptions Act. Customers are paying full price (plus) to acquire the phone on a contract, and yet they are not getting what they are paying for.

As I'm within the 14 days 'cooling off' period I will be calling Orange tonight to cancel the upgrade and return the phone. I'll go to Carphone Warehouse at the weekend to get a proper unbranded one.

I'm pretty sure carphone warehouse have their own firmware number, yes it's unbranded but handsets from carphone warehouse have the letters CW in the firmware version, it's phones4u that offer the proper unbranded, nothing different apart from carphone warehouse has cw in the firmware number.

This is how I understood it for the gs2 so assume it's the same for gs3

I've just spent over an hour on the phone with Orange.

They have agreed to send me a replacement phone and booked the courier for this Friday. However, the guy said that it would be a refurbished phone! Obviously I said that would clearly be unacceptable. But once the order had been passed to the courier, it can't be cancelled. (How on earth he thought it would be OK to send a refurbished phone I don't know.)

So, the courier will deliver the phone on Friday. The guy said I should reject it. Orange would then be notified of the rejection, and he'll be able to send me a new one on Saturday or Sunday.

Pathetic.

After sending my upgrade phone back due to not being Generic (as promised) I eventually got to speak with a manager who as a gesture of goodwill due to me being messed around so much with broken promises (been with orange for over 10 years) they agreed I could upgrade via CPW and orange would add on all my loyalty bonuses after.! So that is what I have done, should be the nice ending to a sorry saga....:).

What do you expect the rooting will do ?

Rooting won't fix your issue, flashing a stock Rom however might, you can't just root then give it back to orange, that's just wrong.

Well, yes, that's what I meant. I can root the phone then flash a new ROM.

It's not wrong at all! The S3 can be rooted by CF-Root 6.3. It does nothing to the guts of the phone other than allowing root access. It can also be reversed.

You haven't understood me, you don't need to root to be able to flash a rom, you can simply flash a rom without the need to root.

When I said you can't root a phone then give it back to orange that's just wrong, you took that in the wrong context.

What that sentence means is when you root your phone your also voiding your warranty, so it would be stupid to root then just give the phone back to orange, it's also morally wrong (despite your circumstances)

If you can root a phone.....you can also unroot it. From that point he can return it if he chooses. Dont worry about what he does and stop crying.

Sorry to be the obvious newbie, but what exactly is Orange, and how does it effect your GS3? Is it for all versions of GS3, or just UK/US only? Getting mine soon and reading this got me worried.

Orange is a UK carrier, like Verizon or Sprint.
They have been well known for putting custom firmware versions on the phone in the past. In this case they've disabled the software update option in phone settings.

sounds like Orange want to prevent OTA and Kies updates so that they can get the latest OS firmware, test. fill with their own bloatware and then release on all unsuspecting Orange customers, that are unaware of the plan by Google to allow all Android users to be able to update as soon as a new release of OS was available without intervention from the mobile phone companies.

The problem with this plan is that Orange customers may not get the latest updates until a good 3 - 4 months after the fact.
