I don't see a sim card has any bearing on signal strength.

is it better if you walk outside ? have you tried different cells ? there could be an issue locally to you at the moment ?

I can't try different phones as I now have a microsim.
It's the same as my Desire HD when I go outside, it's just in my room I usually have full signal and now I'm getting 2/3 bars (which I guess out of 4 isn't a bad thing - I'm not complaining as such, just wondering why the change as I thought better phones gave better signal).

Signal is pretty good for me. Better than my last device. There is an issue with cell standby battery drain right now though. Device still lasts well but not as well as it could.

The scary thing is that Samsung customer service is telling people it's not a problem. They're saying that cell standby uses a lot of battery because it's on all the time, unlike something like the screen which is sometimes off!

Not sure what justification they'd give if I told them my S2 didn't have that problem.

My S3 radio is ever bit as good as my S2. I use a AT&T Microcell at home which pegs to full bars at the house but the S3 performs well for me, even will off the beaten path. The S3 is a rather large phone and there is little excuse for Samsung not getting a really good antenna embedded in the body of the phone.

There has always been little exscuse for them not a decent antenna/radios on their phones, but they have done it lol, my s1 was ok not great but then my nexus has SUCKED severly in this department. My dad also has a nexus and horrile radios. We both really want this phone but might have to go with evo if ppl dont report good radios on this phone.

FYI the US GS3 uses same the Qualcomm S4 SoC as the Evo (ie same radios since they are on the same die as the CPU/GPU);)

Before everyone starts having a meltdown:D Remember that the Quad core international version uses different radios vs. the US variants with the S4 SoC.

It has a great radio, call quality is really clear and I get a great signal nearly everywhere. Only problem is the battery drain bug which I expect will be fixed at some point.

I am starting to see quite a few complaints with reception between these forums and various other Android forums. As much as I would like to stick my head into the sand and say na..na..na and act as if I am not concerned, I can't.

How quickly will you return your Galaxy S3 IF you discover the WiFi and or 3G & 4G radios are poor?

True but I'm not asking for a comparison. Just mentioning it's looking like reception issues are already evident. I'm considering waiting to see what else pops up on the horizon. When the Nexus came out for the first week most didn't want to admit it had reception issues but eventually we couldn't keep lying to ourselves.

S1 has 1 intenna on bottom, also GNex (intergrated with speaker module on bottom left corner)
they put dual intenna on S2 to make up poor reception with low sar rating antenna. (apple also adobted dual intenna on 4S after they had issues with iphone4 reception)

so its not same antenna they're using.
