Root [S-OFF] LazyPanda S-OFF for LTEvo[Locked or Unlocked devices]

GGGRRR, now I'll have to wait until this weekend because this POS laptop the corporation gave me is locked down. I can't load drivers, can't install anything!!:mad::mad::mad:

I was clicking on it like mad last night and all I got was a fistfull of FAIL!

I will accept Early Mon's magnanimous bestowal of banishment for my failure as a root community member.:p

And for being at the party before the Pearly Mon got there!! ;)

I tip my hat to Rxpert the "Root Pharmacist" for having the "marbles" to jump right in and get it done like a boss!! :D

Mr. Ben will be pleased to know when he gets his El TEvo S-OFF will be waiting for him!! :)

No worries. Fun's fun, but what this really buys compared to what we had before, in practical, scientific terms - Zip point Dink Nada.

So, it was painless.

But I was uncomfortable swapping out the drivers I'd used to root both the 3vo and LTEvo. (I didn't seriously not read the directions, I simply decided to try my old drivers. They weren't supposed to work with Regaw's but they did.) Oh well.

For those reading along, yes, don't take chances, follow the instructions, there are only 3 of them: do drivers, run tool, wait patiently. The dev probably found out the hard way that you can brick your phone not following instructions.

Wish I had two phones so I could have guinea pigged the Linux version too, but again, oh well.

For the curious, I used WinXP.

I think S-off gains us a little more. Flashable .zips from hboot. Flashing a recovery just got uber simple. Unless of course you ran the Regaw root method, which was uber simple too. :)

Maybe its the old school in me that wants to see that little S-OFF shown on the bootloader. But yeah, its not really necessary anymore.

It's also uber simple to run Goo Manager, and believe it or not, if you use scary alien's Mini-SDK setup advice (you've seen me break that down) the fastboot command is a single line.

I guess that these days people let it fall by the wayside, but I don't consider it a truly root environment without an SDK installation. Because the day you will need it will be the day without a net connection - Murphy's Law.

By the way, if you are on Sprint TEP, you don't have to worry about being rooted and still getting service. Their policy changed last year on that.

PS - yeah, I stand corrected, I totally spaced hboot flashing. Anyway, no one likes a mod who's always right. ;) :D

Good point.

Does that matter? We'll do it anyway, but for the mini, I'm just curious, thanks.

Well they also updated the Eclipse ADT Plugin to 20.0, which is incompatible with previous versions of the sdk. Not sure who'd use the mini sdk with that, but it could break some things. Not sure if the adb binary or supporting usb dlls have changed though.

Gotcha.

Yeah, we're pretty rigid about advising the right tools for the job, so that's big for our SDK page. Appreciate it, I'll get that escalated, thanks.

The Mini we can catch up on off of the critical path. We don't even explain how how to put it in a path. But I will add the warning to the guide to not mix it up until we align everything. We only advise the Mini use for fastboot installs and simple adb stuff. I tend to imagine that it's sufficient for over 90% of our member base.

I keep the full one on my dedicated platform, the Mini on any other machine I might sit down at. I can't function without a shell interface. :p

It work for me, I'm S-off! EarlyMon does Goo manager have all roms!? or just whoever post their roms!? And can you only download splashes!?

I only used it long enough to validate the TWRP install instructions for the root guide I made, sorry.

With the advanced power menu, I can boot directly into recovery, then just install from TWRP - once I've made my nandroid backup of what I'd been running first - and then while in TWRP, cleaning cache and Dalvik before rebooting. I'm an absolute creature of habit on my nandroids. I use the XDA app in tandem with Boat Browser, makes downloading whatever I want to flash a cinch.

I don't use managers because they don't fit with how I roll, sorry, but likely someone else here can advise on that.

I've always been completely against ROM manager, kernel manager, ect ect ect. Learn to do things from recovery. The manager programs cant help you when you are in a bootloop

But yes, I think how to get S-ON deserves its own thread Early

Ok, please pull out the relevant posts into a new thread, you may be following that closer than I am, I'm doing my usual 20 things, maybe title it "Closed discussion for getting back s-on, devs only" - and then when there's a guide, I'll help do the timestamp magic if there's a desire to preserve the history.

Well, that went quite well! I had a lot of trouble getting root because of driver issues. They loaded up first time and right away this time.

i had gone so far as to making an account with htc to get the unlock token, or whatever, but my 'device' was never found and so I could not get one from them.

The 'delete red writing' zip worked as advertised as well!

Yep, I think an S-ON procedure should have it's own thread, as well.

I'm stuck with this. When I run LazyPanda.exe it shows:
Starting up device......
Connecting to device......
Searching device.....
Found device.....

It's been sitting this way for many minutes. I'm rooted and Unlocked. Running viperROM 1.2. USB Debugging is enabled. I downloaded and installed the linked drivers. Should my phone be booted into bootloader for this?

EDIT: Okay, I guess not. I just tried and it restarted my phone. Anybody know what might be my issue then?

Make sure you've got USB debugging checked and fastboot unchecked. Be sure you've got the drivers linked in the OP from I/O, and be sure to delete HTC sync from your computer.

Check and see if your Virus protection might be screwing with anything. Might not be a bad idea to disable it while you give this a try.

Another thing you could try, nandroid your current setup, and flash the stock rooted rom. Maybe Viper roms bamboo doesn't taste as good and the panda doesn't like it. :)

Would highly recommend holding off on this method until the fix has been released and/or it is out of beta.

Used the Win version yesterday and temp bricked. Forced my hand to finally swap out @ BB for a new LTEvo as I am still w/i my 30 days, but still....

As others have said, right now, S-OFF isn't a necessity on our phones in order to flash everything as it is, so unless you just have to have it (and you don't..)...better off using the one-click unlock methods currently out that don't mess w/ S-OFF. JMTC.

**EDIT** - Definitely not knocking the success others have had using the method, but throwing out a friendly reminder to those that may be wavering on taking the risk.

Wow, that sounds like a lot of hassle.

What is Temp bricked, and what did bb say when you showed up with it messed up?

I guess i am lucky it worked for me...

Temp brick = no boot, no charge, no connection, temporary paperweight. :D

BB reps were perplexed, especially when they plugged it in and got nothing. However, receipt + driver's license x 30 mins = replacement LTEvo.

Knew exactly what I was getting into regarding the risk of trying a beta method, and I'm glad it worked for others. Just happy I was w/i my 30 day window @ BB to get the quick swap rather than waiting for a fix or activating an old phone.

I think, even once the S-OFF method is refined, I'll stick w/ the HTCDev unlock since everything can be flashed through recovery anyway, even if certain things (ie. radios) may require a script mod or two.
